Area Paper Denies Buyout Rumors

onion.jpgThe Onion, a satirical paper based in New York and given away free in dive bars, is denying rumors that it is in negotiations with Viacom, an entertainment company based in New York that doesn’t give away very much for free at all.

This important story broke in Madison, Wisconsin's Capital Times. Unfortunately, our subscription to the Capital Times lapsed, so we didn't hear about this until we read it in DealBook. Andrew Ross Sorkin presumably starts every day reading the news from Madison.

Actually, Sorkin probably starts every day reading ROMENESKO, where this item first appeared.

Sorkin doesn't even write most of DealBook any more. He's got an entire staff now.

indeed sorkin obviously does not read madison/wisconsin based local newspapers every day. ever hear of the power of RSS? the dealbook staff probably has yahoo! news search feeds that download headlines of articles that contain certain corporate finance buzz words ("rumor", "merger", "takeover", etc)

also, as the user above named "dealer" notes, dealbook is huge now and sorkin has rank and file people under him. im sure sorkin's minions do all the dirty work, especially the link/lead hunting

The Onion has been trying to sell itself for years. Proof of a past attempt at a Viacom buyout via Comedy Central can be found here. They didn't move to NYC to drink Cosmos and Mojitos at Chelsea hotspots.
