[We’re celebrating our birthday by bringing you a bit of the “Best of DealBreaker” today. Feel free to email in your nominations to: tips(at)dealbreaker(dot)com. We’re also accepting gifts, preferably of better vintages and in liquid form. But wallet sized folding gifts are always welcome.]
We discovered young Lucy Gao the same way a lot of other people did: we were forwarded her precocious email from a friend at an investment bank. She displayed all of the least attractive attributes of the business school “gunner” type: hyper-organized, self-important and totally without any sense of shame, proportion or humor.
At first, to be honest, we were hesitant to publish her email. She was young, and clearly didn’t know any better. Believe it or not, we have a conscience about these things. And we’ve made plenty of our own mistakes, and will probably make far worse ones.
But then we saw the list of people who had received this email. It was everywhere. Whatever extra dose of publicity we were about to give this girl, it was clear her name had already traveled far and wide within the industry, and especially London, where she worked.
Still, we were kind to the girl. In our first post we redacted her last name. It soon became apparent that there was no containing the story, however, so we eventually surrendered to the inevitable.
Where is Lucy now? We did some checking but haven’t heard anything. If you know Lucy Gao—or if you are Lucy Gao—please send us an email. Tips(at)dealbreaker(dot)com wants to know!
After the jump, we bring you the email that started the mess.
And of course, there’s a lot more Lucy Gao madness in our archives, where she earned her very own entry.
