According to anonymous tipster(s), what famous deal mogul and mega-buyout titan is father to "Equity Private," author of buyout tell-all "Going Private?" (Hint: If true she's an HBS grad and married to a Stanford alum, which explains many of the Going Private jokes made at the expense of the Cardinal).
Frankly, we're skeptical. Are you?

No effin way it's Kimberly....but that would make so much sense too...
Posted by , May 08, 2007 2:23PM
blackstone?
Posted by went to HBS. , May 08, 2007 2:30PM
KKR. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT.
Posted by Texas Energy , May 08, 2007 2:38PM
Here is a pic from 2004 of KK.
Posted by , May 08, 2007 2:39PM
how old are schwartzmann's kids?
Posted by BSD , May 08, 2007 2:39PM
Like I said in the first comment, if it was Kimberly Kravis it would make sense from the HBS/Stanford standpoint but the Kimberly I met was definitely not the extreme workaholic type that EP seems to be (she was also still at Tiffany's corpdev I believe).
Posted by nailed it , May 08, 2007 2:41PM
KKS
Posted by Man , May 08, 2007 2:42PM
It's not KK Kravis; she's more into the softer side of things; youngest trustee at Loomis Chaffee, her and HK's high school, posed in Seventeen Magazine while at Loomis...etc!
Posted by anon , May 08, 2007 2:43PM
Damn that Shoshana's effing hot, in a Jap-py sort of way.
Posted by BSD , May 08, 2007 2:50PM
Bess,
Henry isn't happy with you. I suggest you get your ass into that bunny suit and to Rio, like NOW.
Posted by , May 08, 2007 2:53PM
It isn't polite to out people like that.
Posted by If EP left b/c she got outed... , May 08, 2007 3:02PM
...that would be the lamest shit ever. That was one of the only good websites left
Posted by , May 08, 2007 3:04PM
bess and kravis's daughter are in cahoots. you heard it here first.
Posted by BSD , May 08, 2007 3:09PM
It's not an if unfortunately, she already took her site down: http://equityprivate.typepad.com/
Also, Bess, I wasn't kidding about what I said in my last post. Get your ass out of NYC.
Posted by Texas Energy , May 08, 2007 3:16PM
If she isn't already, she should just publish everything from her site as a book. Maybe that's why it's down.
Posted by Anony , May 08, 2007 3:18PM
Seriously? Sad she got outed but pretty awesome that it's her. Let's hope that this inspires her to get a book or column or something deal. She clearly doesn't need the money and is by far the best finance writer around.
Posted by , May 08, 2007 3:22PM
forget ep...who's the debt bitch
Posted by anon , May 08, 2007 3:24PM
Come back EP!
Posted by , May 08, 2007 3:28PM
Don't be pissed at poor Bess. SHe's just reportin da news.
Posted by Non-finance Guy , May 08, 2007 3:33PM
Wait...Henry Kravitz?
Posted by You guys suck , May 08, 2007 3:34PM
Bess and all of you at Dealbreaker- Great job dickheads. You guys are f-ing assholes. Going Private's content was thought provoking. I just sent her an email yesterday on EU economic policy and was looking forward to a response. Not anymore.....Dealbreaker on the other hand was like a traffic accident blog- you didn't want to look but you did. Now I am done with all of it. Good job Bess.
Posted by SAY IT AIN'T SO! , May 08, 2007 3:39PM
Et tu, Bessie?

What are you talking about? Going Private works fine from here.

site's back, you idiots (dealbreaker readers, not dealbreaker)

Huh?
The site works fine from here.
Posted by TED , May 08, 2007 3:48PM
Site not down any longer, if it ever was. EP, where are you?
If you are the outed person in question, I have a simple strategy for you: complete and utter denial. Lie, lie, lie. Then, lie some more. Oh, and kick pal Bess where it hurts the next time you see her.
We will all look the other way, won't we fellas?
Posted by , May 08, 2007 3:51PM
Thats not the point. It is not about whether the site is up or not. Dealbreaker is being a dick to EP. She obviously wants privacy as to her true identity but Dealbreaker can't respect that.
Posted by BSD , May 08, 2007 3:54PM
Glad to see her back, and looks she's one step ahead of you, TED. Check the latest post on EP.
Posted by gin&tonic , May 08, 2007 3:55PM
"Oh, and kick pal Bess where it hurts the next time you see her."
My recommendation:
"I'm gonna punch you in the ovary, that's what I'm gonna do, A straight shot. Right to the baby maker"-Anchorman
Next thing Dealbreaker is going to do is shut down Leveraged Sellout...
Posted by , May 08, 2007 3:56PM
dudes, if you knew the truth between EP and Bess you would know that there is no bad blood...in fact, kravis's daughter and bess...
Posted by TED , May 08, 2007 3:57PM
BSD -- She is a goddess of high finance, is she not?
It would be fun to watch her kick Bess, tho. Just sayin ...
Posted by so would you , May 08, 2007 3:59PM

Posted by Equity Private , May 08, 2007 4:16PM
Children, children.
Do stop ranting. Bess would be my BFF if I could get Muffie out of the picture.
Posted by LowlyLawyer , May 08, 2007 4:31PM
I hate days without Muffie. And EP, I would be more than happy to take Muffie of Bess's hands ...
Posted by , May 08, 2007 4:46PM
where the fuck is the muffie-bess-ep roundtable?
Posted by Come on, you're thinking it also , May 08, 2007 4:51PM
Gentlemen, hear me out. I think we have been played, and this whole episode was just part two of a two-part bet between admitted near-BFFs EP and Bess as to which of their blogsites could attract the most traffic by releasing details of a scandal involving the authors.
First, we had illicit canoodling between Bess and Muffie, supposedly documented online by Carney.
Now, we have EP being outed. A suspicious person might believe the "anonymous tipster" to be Muffie.
EP announced on GP that the traffic spike from concerned DB readers took down her site. I think these ladies had some serious cash riding on the outcome.
A coincidence? I think not.
Posted by nm , May 08, 2007 4:55PM
Definitely not Kimberly Kravis and I also suspect something along the lines of 4:51PM. Could backfire though, so let's hope for EP.
Posted by Equity Private , May 08, 2007 4:55PM
I'm still waiting on my check, Bess.
Posted by LC Alum , May 08, 2007 5:31PM
I went to Loomis Chaffe. Jim "Grim" Wilson, who taught Henry Kravis how to think, still teaches economics there. Incredible. Send your kids if they're smart.
Posted by tvc15 , May 08, 2007 5:43PM
The EP site is up. In fact, never went down. BSD shoots his wad way too early, as usual (from what I've heard).
Is that a pic of Bess on the EP site...?
A day w/out Muffie is a good day.
Posted by Come on, you're thinking it also , May 08, 2007 5:48PM
GP is up with a complete Bess Levin interview, edited and everything.
You tell me all this wasn't planned in advance.
Naughty, naughty, girls.
Posted by Equity Private , May 08, 2007 5:56PM
We actually started the interview almost a week ago. Far before the "blind item" came up. I'm quite happy to enjoy the traffic though.
As for the tipper, ask Carney. I tried to pry it from him but, as you might imagine, he wouldn't budge.
Posted by BSD , May 08, 2007 6:03PM
Yeah guess we did overreact a bit, but Henry is still pissed, Bess (although apparently for slandering KiKi's good name by implying that she works in a middle market PE shop).
Posted by Equity Private , May 08, 2007 6:09PM
"Yeah guess we did overreact a bit, but Henry is still pissed, Bess (although apparently for slandering KiKi's good name by implying that she works in a middle market PE shop)."
Our IRR is better than any of the KKR funds though.
Posted by BSD , May 08, 2007 6:17PM
Just read the interview. Wow. Now that was on point. Bess, I was never on your bandwagon but after the "halfsies on the abortion" line consider me a lifelong admirer. If Henry does go after you, you have free use of my CX to take you anywhere in the world.
EP, I don't doubt it. My friends at Fox Paine are quite happy. I'm long middle market PE long-term actually, but for some it's more about the prestige than profits. Henry talks about Saul the same way he talks about Kohlberg. Never saying anything bad outright, but you know what he's thinking...
Posted by Equity Private , May 08, 2007 6:23PM
"Just read the interview. Wow. Now that was on point. "
Obviously, we added a pair of questions after this all came up.
Posted by *sigh* , May 08, 2007 6:35PM
Tch, tch, tch. Not happy. Nooot happy.
Posted by Anonymous , May 08, 2007 6:56PM
DB isn't a Wall Street tabloid, it's a tabloid about the authors and their blogger friends.
Posted by , May 08, 2007 6:59PM
nah, it's about wall street and bess which, i have to say, i have no problem with.
Posted by BH , May 08, 2007 7:06PM
i've always found bess particularly funny but that interview takes the cake.
Posted by , May 08, 2007 8:07PM
how is this bess person 'working in finance'? by posting these stupid posts about her analyst friends?
wtf? spiers' exit is totally starting to make sense now.
Posted by 8:07 if a fucking idiot , May 08, 2007 8:14PM
when did bess ever say she worked in finance? and equity private is, quite literally, one of the best finance blogs period, and is certainly not written by some "analyst."
as for spiers, people in the know know it had nothing to do with any of the writers...
Posted by i also love ep , May 08, 2007 8:21PM
just read that interview:
bess levin is a goddess.
Posted by fuck halfsies... , May 08, 2007 10:40PM
Beth I'll pay for the entire abortion.
Posted by did i? , May 08, 2007 10:45PM
"fuck halfsies": abortions are pretty expensive...though think a gentleman should take care of the whole thing...but if bess and i were married, this wouldn't be a problem...did i jsut say that out loud?
Posted by Humphrey Bogus , May 09, 2007 12:36AM
Just for the record, Jason Karp '94 is the youngest trustee at Chaffee.
Posted by HBS Grad , May 09, 2007 10:44AM
Still think KK was either a bad guess or a red herring. Zibby on the other hand has always been into writing/ journalism (Harbus, YaleDaily News etc) and married a fellow HBS grad so would is still a likely Stanford basher.
So despite the claims of not being the progeny of a buyout stud or married, that's my guess.
