One reason is that “Goldman's current package is not enough to compete with West Coast IT companies.” But then again, if you work at Goldman, you get to play with Excel all day. Working in IT in finance is a nightmare. They don't get any respect from anyone.

given that ibankers are essentially (and necessarily) geeks (albeit of finance which is so much sexier than IT/programming), I think that geek:a$$hole ratio @ goldman is a bit out of whack

Haha the IT consultants that work at GS bill out at around $350 an hour and work regular weeks. Obviously IT is better than being an analyst, or even associate.

They probably work for an IT consulting company (IBM Global Services, for example). The consulting firm charges $350/hr but that's not what the consultant earns.
