The silly Great Satan West is at it again, naming institutions after words that sound a little bit like Arabic words. Really holy Arabic words, like the ones used to refer to the traditional biographies of Muhammed. No, the combination of NASD and NYSE regulation was not going to be called, "Spend a Little Time in a Cave and People will Believe Anything" but rather, "SIRA," or the Securities Industry Regulatory Authority. Sensitivity trainers also advise against using the term IRA after words that end in "s."

How the great wrath of men with really strong convictions and really pointy things was averted, from the Washington Post:

When NASD chairman Mary Schapiro announced the name SIRA at a luncheon in June, she was not aware that it "could create confusion or be considered offensive because of its similarity to an Arabic term used to refer to the traditional biographies of Muhammad."

"Because of this feedback, we determined that it was appropriate to select the alternative name of Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, or FINRA, for our new organization," she wrote in a note to NASD employees.

Muhammed has a series of less traditional biographical works including the very popular culinary guide, "The Meccan Caravan Raiding Diet" along with the self-help book "Deities are from Mars, Their Six Year Old Wives are from Venus." Fortunately the West has not named any institutions after the Arabic words for these titles, meaning we're that much closer (a few hundred years and an enlightenment) to Arab countries liking us.

In the same semi-retarded spirit, I propose the Germans eliminate the word for "six" from their vernacular, because it sounds slightly like the English word used to refer to the traditional biographies of Hugh Hefner and Jenna Jameson.

At the same time, we laughs at Chevy for marketing the Nova in Mexico. This issue is more about the global impact of business decisions rather than an the impact of a few wackjobs. Keith, Please keep in mind that there is a big difference between Islam and Whabbism. Considering where Dubai will likely be in 5 years, "muslim" bashing could cost a lot in lost profits for those in finance.

Unfortunately it looks as though we took a page from Europe by making a concession to extremists, but hey that worked fairly well for them as we can all see. Also I highly doubt that a country that was predominately Muslim would be willing to succumb to the demands of someone who claimed that they had made light of the Bible.
On another note, simply because Dubai may be a big player in the near future, does that mean we are to succumb to all of its desires simply because we “need” the business.

Dubai has little oil, is developing properties so rapidly that it will soon crash its real estate markets, and its main attraction is that it's an opulent tourist destination in the middle of a barren desert with one season 100% humidity and 50 degrees C (122 degrees F) 100% of the time. Plus they're can't escape from the fact that most of their population consists of wacko Muslims. At some point there will be mobs of bearded maniacs in Dubai throwing stones at "7 star" hotels on New Years Eve, as was the case in Bahrain a few years ago.

If they own 15% of boeing and airbus, x% of GE, Exxon, Chevron, etc, then it won't really matter at some point if oil dries up... they'll own a bunch of other stuff anyway. it's an interesting strategy of economic diversification... having the government buy a bunch of foreign industry assets.

In other news, an islamic looking guy on the 6 train was rapping loudly at me about "killing all white people." Being white and somewhat offended, I gave him a nasty glare, and he asked me, "you gotta problem, homey?" I responded, "Well, it's disconcerting that you're rapping about killing all white people." And he said, "Hey man, that's how I feel." Nice huh.

Because if you took the time to read up from unbiased writings about Islam & Muslims, you'd realize that Muslims are the only people who believe in Moses (of the Jews), Jesus (of the Christians), and Muhammad (of the Muslims themselves). You'd realize that "Mo" said the best things about Jesus, when Jews cursed & hurt him and his mother. You'd realize that when assholes like YOU attack innocents in Iraq and Afghanistan, then it is perfectly normal for people there--Muslims or not--to attack you back and retaliate. If assholes like you leave Arab & Muslims countries be, there wouldn't be any so-called terrorism. Because those who brainwash a minority of young Muslims te become terrorists are using assholes like YOU as an excuse for attacking YOUR people.

You are no more different from the terrorists, because you are using some dodgy examples to badmouth all the Muslims and their prophet, and that's exactly what they do in terrorist cells: they use assholes like YOU as an example of why Westerners should be attacked and destroyed.
