Only You Can Stop CEO Internet Addiction!

wholefoodsyahooforumsjohnmackey.jpg

For the most part, we stay away from online stock forums. As far as we can tell, the message boards are usually full of yahoos, stock cultists and pump-and-dump scam artists. But, it turns out, there are occasionally more interesting people lurking on the boards—sometimes even the CEOs of public companies.

Late yesterday the Wall Street Journal reported that Whole Foods co-founder and chief executive John Mackey had posted Yahoo Finance message boards under the name Rahodeb, which is his wife Deborah’s name spelled backwards. This morning it’s on the front page of the Journal.

We mentioned this story in the Opening Bell but we can’t let it go. We like Mackey. He seems like a decent guy. We admire his libertarian streak. The Federal Trade Commission ruling against the acquisition of Wild Oats was a travesty of justice. His refusal to back down to the federales has been inspirational. They have like seven different kinds of peppers at the Houston Street Whole Foods Market. You get the point. We predisposed to root for the guy.

But as hard as we try, we can’t understand what could have been going through his mind when he was going on message boards talking down his competitors (and future acquisition targets) and pumping up his own company. The only explanation we’ve been able to muster is this: the internet made him crazy!

It's happened before. As Gary Weiss has shown, some chief executives simply cannot be trusted with the internet. If you are working in the IT department at a public company now, you might want to look into disconnecting your boss's internet connection. It's for his own good.

His wife's name is really Debohar, not Deborah, that was just a typo in the Journal...

what about Patty Byrne, that guy went from being a legit (as far as we knew) executive to a total wacko like that. Seriously do none of these companies have compliance/pr/legal teams????

And does anyone at the SEC have internet access or what is their deal, this is just mind-f&ck-boggling!!!

I find this story to be both fascinating and a little bit creepy. Did you read the post where someone makes fun of his haircut and Rahodeb replies "I think he's cute"? Or where Rahodeb says "I really admire the man"? Most of the posts are sill up on Yahoo Finance and the more I read, the weirder it gets.

Hmm, maybe his motives are as sinister as our motives for posting comments here ???

Lets: My sinister motives don't involve tearing down the stock of a competitor, and I'm not an "insider" of a publicly traded entity. My animosity is restricted to plebs, white-trash, bankers who dress like IT, Democrats, and environmentalists. Satan likely has some enforcement interest, but not the SEC!

Plus WF is totally hyped. Their prepared food is shoddy, you can't buy real household products, and their prices are worse than specialty gourmet stores that keep their employees and develop relationships with customers. Only thing I like at WF is the ready to grill planked fish that comes with herbs and lemon so that you don't need to wait an hour for the cedar to soak or remember to toss planks in water before you leave for work.

WF is too full of hippies and Democrats who are trying to use their consumption to try to appear superior. The vast numbers of Volvos and Prii simply reinforce this.

I think you are being too hard on Mackey.

Nice use of the word "Prii" there, BB.

How about taking more time to go out to your many stores and make sure the management is on point?

Instead of wasting time like a thirteen your old on a message board?

Maybe Neutron Jack should have spent more time doofing around on the internet like this moron.

He will never be as good as "utlonghornsrule" who posted nasties about Ken Lay on the Yahoo Enron message board back in 2001.

Lay had him fired. Look what then happened to Lay.

"Volvo" is Swedish for "in the shop".

Give me a break. Dems don't want good business? Who the heck do you think does shopping in this country and buying of stock? Only Repugs?

This story does remind me of some Repugs I worked for once who owned a private, for-profit healthcare company that bought up rural county hospitals. The CEO of the newly acquired hospital in our town spent alot of his time online anonymously slamming local docs who were not bending over to the new hospital admin by boosting up patient referrals to surgery and radiology, two of the biggest cost centers in a hospital.

Needless to say, the Repug CEO was eventually fired in a very dramatic fashion following a huge investigation that included "restraint of trade" allegations and findings. He had a police escort out of the facility.

So watch your immature partisan slammings here. Jerks live on all sides of the political spectrum. I'd like to see consumers not just get treated like they are but a "walking wallet" in the big scheme of things.

Indeed, and the leaders are the ones who use the term "Repugs". Talk about immature.
