It's a Great Day for a Ball Game; Let's Lose Two

ernie_banks7.jpg Now that Labor Day has passed, it's officially time to think about real sports - college and pro football, NBA pre-season and baseball pennant races (baseball up until Labor Day is merely a way to pass time). Moving to the top of the worst division in baseball (which I say begrudgingly, being a Pittsburgh Pirates fan, if that's been possible the last 13 losing seasons), is the Chicago Cubs, 1.5 games up on the Brewers, also barely over .500. When the Cubs blow it somehow, either in the regular or post-season, new owners will seek different losing strategies, from Dan Primack's PE Week Wire:

A very interesting M&A battle could soon heat up on the North Side of Chicago. Various news reports say that if/when Sam Zell finishes buying Tribune Co., he will put the Cubbies up for sale. Two of the expected bidders are Madison Dearborn chief John Canning and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. A contrast in styles, to say the least…

We've heard the Cuban rumblings (which is even more annoying in that he'd probably buy the Pirates if they were smart enough to sell), but the John Canning rumors are relatively newer. Does it really matter?

By the way, does anyone know the current whereabouts of former Hewitt Associates employee and infamous Moises Alou interferer Steve Bartman? Is he still in the scintillating world of BPO consulting? Did he ever take the Florida asylum offered by Jeb Bush?

Go Appalachian State. Muck Fichigan!

Have to love college football, single elimination season and one of the 3 good thing about state schools (parties and hot sorority girls being the others, but they're pretty tied to football anyways).

Baseball is almost as interesting as cricket.

The Texas Rangers' baseball pitchers appear to be so skinny because they can't even get their mouths over their plates at home.

Agreed, F' Michigan (also included there are FSU and ND).

Now that ColFB is back are we gonna have to educate Bess similar to the quasi-planned MNF session at Tonic?

College football? Who cares? Why do I want to watch a bunch of dumb criminals mug one another? Either be honest, speed it up, and allow fighting (i.e. hockey) or stop pretending that the athletics is in any way connected to academia.

The Ivy League got it right -- and that's why they are over-represented in the ranks of the wealthy.

Pre-season NBA is more important than regular season baseball? get a clue Hahn.

The baseball ownership group is the ultimate good old boys club so, combined with the fact that Canning is a good friend of Bud Selig's, I think Cuban owning the Cubs is a long shot.

Even if the Pirates were to sell, Cuban owning them would be an equally long shot. MLB isn't real big into "rock the boat" types (can you imagine Cuban sounding off to every microphone within a mile of him about his ideas to fix the steroid mess and his thoughts on the inconsistent calling of the strike zone by the umps?) and White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf (also owner of the Chicago Bulls) is a big type Cuban nemesis.

On a happier note...pro and college football! Good news, bad news for me. On the good side, LSU is primed to grab their second title in four years but, on the bad side, the Miami Dolphins are about to redefine the term "rebuilding year".

College football, while entertaining, is really just the last stop for a bunch of musclebound retards who have been afforded special treatment with regard to academics so they could continue the important practice of throwing the smacking each other on the asses.

Don't get me wrong, if you have the talent to play in the NFL it is a worthwhile pursuit, but, I played tight end for two years in college, and most of my fellow teammates are not doing shit anymore. At least I got a job on the street, bwahaha.

And yeah, preseason basketball over baseball? With most basketball games you only need to watch the last five minutes, or at most the last quarter, unless there are superstars playing.

Go Red Sox!

I'll give up on baseball the day players start cheating somehow to win games and promote themselves in the process. Ya hear?!? Yeah, like THAT would ever happen. No way that's gonna happenin America's true sport, man, no effing way.

NBA pre-season? Why so I can watch the same players who coast during most games in the regular season not even try in the preseason?

No thanks, I'd much prefer counting down the days to College Basketball

Didn't want to say anything but this is killing me... the comment about the NBA pre-season was a littttttle joke... I mean, come on, the NBA pre-season?

The NBA up until, what, Valentine's Day is pretty much a joke.

...and with you in getting psyched about college bball PB. Although my Pitt "maybe we'll make it past the sweet 16 this year" Panthers aren't going to be nearly as good this year, not having an underachieving out of shape lunky white center to rely on to miss bunnies on a constant basis.
