Tim Sykes Is No Gardener

timsykesyoungmoney.bmpIs there a better to herald in Black Monday than with a Tim Sykes cover story? ‘Young Money’ says ‘No.’ The magazine’s October/November issue, which hits newsstands next week but is available online today, carries an almost-1,000 word feature on America’s most famous Bar-Mitzvah boy. It is spectacular, and almost makes you think that were there to be a crash this week like the one back in 1987, the market could be rallied up to a 52 week-high by Tim Sykes alone, in matter of three days (Sykes has confirmed to DealBreaker that he is indeed capable of such a feat, though he referred to it as “just a typical day at the office”). The piece has it all, including a lede, which is this: “Timothy Sykes is no gardener, but he's an expert on hedges ¬- hedge fund investments that is.” Plus predictions (see if you can guess which one we made up but Tim has probably said before): "[The term] ‘hedge fund’ will soon be a buzz word,” "In five to ten years everyone will know what a hedge fund is,” "In ten to fifteen years, I'll be able to stop blowing myself because Stevie Cohen will be doing it for me." A definition: “In [Sykes’s] words [a hedge fund is]: a legal structure that allows you to invest in anything.” Rounding up: “In five year's time, Sykes saw profits of approximately $2 million.” Hilarity: “Sykes said he likes to think of himself as a bit of a ‘financial cowboy,’ opening up the stock market frontier for anyone who wants to explore it.” (Sykes also told DB in a follow-up IM that: CilantroFP: i feel like i'm the nxt joel Osteen CilantroFP: spreading the gospel everywhere.) Delusions of grandeur: "Everyone on Wall Street knows me now." And spin: "Losing makes me wiser.”

if he really wants to help people he could start by teaching them what a mutual fund is because most americans still dont even understand THAT

Posted by , Oct 22, 2007 3:41PM

i'd rather visit epsteins massage room than share a bathroom with larry craig

Posted by MG, Oct 22, 2007 3:44PM

I've never even seen this rag before, but still, wouldn't you think the authors/editors would have googled this assmonkey before putting him on its cover? Is Young Money published by the same morons behind Trader Monthly?

Posted by , Oct 22, 2007 3:48PM

probably

you know seeing as how i never would have heard of this guy if not for dealbreaker incessant coverage of him, i know nobody at my hedge fund has a clue who he is, DB is really doing the best job of publicizing this guy of anyone

come on now really, wouldn't we all be better off if bess wasn't constantly promoting this dude?

Posted by , Oct 22, 2007 3:50PM

how is she promoting him? she attributed this quote to sykes: "In ten to fifteen years, I'll be able to stop blowing myself because Stevie Cohen will be doing it for me."

Posted by , Oct 22, 2007 3:54PM

this is a truly instructive lesson on how desperate media are to spread any lying bullshit.

MSM 'journalists,' this is why you are not respected by the public... fucking liars and snakeoil salesmen..

"We [parentco: InCharge Institute of America Inc.] provide relief to financially distressed individuals and families experiencing consumer debt problems and provide consumers with education and personal financial management tools to enable them to use credit responsibly."

Someone has royally fucked up.

i was wondering what happened to corey feldman, good for him

Posted by , Oct 22, 2007 4:00PM

@3:50 because all the teasing aside, 300,000 dealbreaker readers who would never have heard of this guy now know almost everything about him and his hedge fund.

that kind of notoriety is enough to get the guy on tv or the cover of a magazine

Posted by , Oct 22, 2007 4:02PM

Hey if Bess hadn't brought this douchebag to your attention you might be hiring him as head rouge trader on your desk right now.

Posted by Stranded, Oct 22, 2007 4:02PM

Bad press is better than no press my friend.

Posted by Nicholas Mycroft, Oct 22, 2007 4:16PM

why is Young Money running a cover story called "top 10 budget travel tips?"

Posted by , Oct 22, 2007 4:19PM

Nicholas Mycroft, the magazine is published by a not-for-profit that seeks to educate financially distressed individuals. That's Sykes's new audience. After all, you can't sell miracle healing holy water to someone who isn't ill.

Tim Sykes is gay

Posted by L'Emmerdeur, Oct 22, 2007 4:32PM

If he is gay, he would do best to prepare for many a lonely night, as most gay men with any self-esteem would nay touch him, let alone skewer him, even with the shaft of Rosie O'Donnell.

Posted by , Oct 22, 2007 4:39PM

@4:02 at least only one of us would have to suffer!

Posted by , Oct 22, 2007 4:48PM

L'Emmerdeur are you speaking based on your professional opinion of Sykes's sexyness?

Posted by inIT4the$, Oct 22, 2007 4:51PM

Joel Osteen has done a lot better investing his parishoner's money than young Timmy, they at least have that big f'in building they worship in. Plus he blesses them weekly. All Timmy has done is lose lose lose. Maybe he should take up preying, whoops praying.

Posted by fleshypeddler, Oct 22, 2007 5:07PM

He looks like the gay offspring of Tony Romo and Ben Affleck.

HOUSTON (AP) - The wife of the pastor of the nation's largest church was asked to leave a plane after she failed to comply with a flight attendant's instructions, the FBI said Tuesday.
Houston Lakewood Church pastor Joel Osteen, his wife, Victoria, and their two children boarded a Continental Airlines flight from Houston to Vail, Colo., Monday. The plane's door had been closed when Victoria Osteen and a flight attendant had a disagreement.

"She failed to comply with the flight attendant's instructions, and they were asked to leave the flight," FBI spokeswoman Luz Garcia said without elaborating on the disagreement.

The FBI reviewed a report from Continental after the incident, Garcia said. No charges will be filed, she said.

Old new on the Osteen issue.

Timmay is leveraging the Dealbreaker notoriety and ...well......you know....

Posted by The DNAnalyzer, Oct 22, 2007 5:53PM

He looks like the love child of Ben Afleck and Kristy McNichol.

Can someone punch that stupid face for me please?

Posted by The_Overdog, Oct 22, 2007 7:54PM

Whomever photoshopped his face for the mag must not have been a fan. the V cheek to the inside and a hampster cheek to the outside make him look like a Batman villian, or a chaw chewin' baseball manager.

Timmmayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Where can I get a sweet pimp suit like Keyshawn Johnsons wearing on MNF? Imagine the bitches I could swing if I was flossin like that!

Posted by , Oct 22, 2007 10:39PM

I'm laying 9 to 1 odds that Sykes is no longer a millionaire.

Posted by Man, Oct 23, 2007 11:04AM

Wow, this is so ridiculous that everyone, including me has wasted so much time reading this story and even writing a comment about a guy with no real market training or understanding; like so many other $30mm fund managers.

Posted by Ben Stein, Oct 24, 2007 6:33AM

Wow, I did not know that freak Sykes was that desperate to sell that shitty book/dvd....he must not be selling much of that snake oil crap....

....next he will be selling special "favors" at truck stops...maybe he will be a successful gay male prostitute...

Posted by To Man, Oct 24, 2007 9:48AM

Sykes never even got over $3mm! I gave in though and read his book, not a bad writer

Posted by , Oct 25, 2007 7:17AM

I read the Sykes book, and it was a waste of time and money!

Posted by Fred R., Oct 27, 2007 1:49PM

Sykes book is NOT a classic, but rather a way for Sykes to make excuses and money from his failures.

Sykes horrible book is not worth $20.

Tim is an inpsiration to all, you haters need to get laid!

Posted by , Oct 27, 2007 3:45PM

What a pathetic joke Sykes has become from failed hedge fund manager to “SPAM aliases” to sell his snake oil crap…

…I agree with your family Tim, those people in your family who know you best do not trust you with their money, and neither should anybody else…

Posted by Tim=OK, but Book Sucks, Oct 28, 2007 12:58PM

I read Sykes mediocre hedge fund book since I knew him at Tulane, and like him as a person. However, the book is an empty and uninspiring story about how Sykes became a self-absorbed irresponsible stock trader. This book is NOT a “classic” and story is NOT “Rocky-like”(as author Sykes claims). This book is basically like a blog of an average person who got lucky trading stocks and then his luck ran out (which it really should be - blog and nothing more).

Beware of all the phony glowing reviews for Sykes Book. Its the good ole boy network in high gear where authors/investment advisers use the buddy system to give fake good reviews to each other.

Sykes put the term “stock operator” in title in order to confuse all future book searches for Jesse Livermore’s excellent story (Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, by Edwin Lefèvre (1923)). This cheesy trick might help book sales, but needless to say, Sykes has nothing in common with the great trader Livermore.

Sykes comes across like a hyper/immature/video game player-type Trader, which worked for him for a few years; then the law of averages caught up with him. His “return to the mean” continues during the past two years; and his very poor investment strategies are DOWN -37% since Jan 2006. His continuous bad performance throughout 2007 shows that he does not learn from his mistakes; and readers can only cringe while watching Sykes slow motion demise.

Posted by , Oct 28, 2007 8:25PM

Isn’t it funny that many failed traders, like Sykes, turn into “trading authors or experts” that want to show you how to trade?

I think that’s the greatest irony of the trading “education” industry. “Those that can, do; those that can’t, teach.” applies here about Tim Sykes .
