Hipster Theme Party: Wall Street, Circa 1987

Among the more amusing items in our inbox this morning was an invitation to a party in Williamsburg, Brooklyn sporting the theme "Wall Street Circa 1987."

"Two dark events are upon us: the end of my 20s and the beginning of the recession," the woman throwing the party writes. "Let's fight both Brooklyn style with a giant dirty bomb of a party."

We're taking this as a hopeful sign. If Steve Schwarzman's lavish $5 million birthday party rang the bell at the top of the credit driven leverage buyout boom, a party thrown by Williamsburg hipsters build around downbeat market sentiment might be a sign of the bottom.

Looking to hipsters for ANY sort of trend is just a bad, bad idea.

Carney you party in williamsburg?!

Not generally anymore. Especially on weekends, the place is unbearable. But I have a few friends who live out that way and have been known to be lured to house parties.

I still like some of the places I used to frequent, including Iona and the Levee. The bar Harefield Road--which is somewhat off the hipster beaten track--is fantastic. Serves the best pint of Guinness in New York. I'll drink there anytime.

hipsters always look hungry.

related note - anyone know where in nyc (not brooklyn) one can get the monk beer featured on the front page of the journal today?

interesting...I'll keep those places in mind

I second Carney's endorsement of Harefield Road. I have impoverished non-finance guy friends from college who live right near there. They've got a great beer and scotch selection (strangely, some hiptards seem to know their shit when it comes to beer and whisky). It's a good place to visit if you'd like to check out how the other half lives. I can only take it in measured doses though. I hope I'm not forced to live like that after I'm laid off.

HAM news: brooklyn is NYC, as are Qns, Bronx, SI. The correct query would have been "where in MANHATTAN..." You must be one of those cute plough boys from the hinterlands. I want you.

What do you call a hipster who lives in brooklyn????............hey, waiter....

Posted by HAM'05, Nov 29, 2007 2:40PM

i want you too ;)

nyc = "the city" = manhattan
i can't be the only one who uses them interchangeably at the exclusion of "the outer boroughs"... but thanks for the geo lesson iowa.

HAM'05, i thought bess was your girl

2:20 is a man.

Posted by Give-up Agreement, Nov 29, 2007 3:07PM

2:20 (1) is definitely a man. He mentioned "plough" and HAM'05 in the same sentence. Clearly he wants to plough HAM'05. HAM’05 knows this and likes it, e.g., "i want you too ;)" (@2:40).

I don't care what you boys do in private, but please don't turn good old dealbroker.com into a gay cruising site.

uhh, manhattan is "the city" the boroughs are not "the city" end of story.

Posted by , Nov 29, 2007 5:13PM

agree that new york = the city = manhattan. When you say the whole mouthful though (new york city) it implies anywhere in the five boros

Posted by , Nov 29, 2007 5:58PM

yeah. "new york" = manhattan; "the city" = manhattan; "new york city" = i don't want to admit i am talking about brooklyn, bronx, et al.; "upstate" = everything else

Posted by , Nov 29, 2007 7:16PM

The city is in London, fools.

Posted by , Nov 29, 2007 10:51PM

No, the City is in London

Posted by , Nov 29, 2007 10:52PM

upstate = everything else EXCEPT LONG ISLAND

Posted by , Nov 30, 2007 8:22AM

technically true, although i have been known to refer to locations in nassau county as "upstate" from time to time, i mean really, why bother keeping them straight

The authoritative source says:

Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten
From the Battery to the top of Manhattan

as a close personal friend of the "hip-tard" throwing said party, thought it might be interesting to note that she is working her way through medical school, with the eventual goal of providing healthcare to all individuals, regardless of borough . . .

that said, any of you finance types wanna donate some blow for the party?

we'd like to make it authentic, but our nonprofit jobs just don't provide the disposable income for such fancies . . .
