John Edwards and the Mask of Opposition
Or, How To Support The Policies Of Big Business While Sounding Like You’re A Rebel

Tim Carney spends way too much of his time sounding the same theme over and over again: big business loves big government, even though both sides find it convenient to hide the love affair. It’s a shame because his talents* would be much better used if he could focus on a wider array of subjects. Unfortunately, the love affair continues in its not quite open and not nearly notorious enough manner, so he’s stuck with his beat.

This week he’s taking on the pose of John Edwards, the man famous for a very expensive haircut and making speeches about “two Americas.” The gist of his stump speech is that he is a man of the people armed with policies to repair our broken Republic if only the evil forces of business can be overcome. But is big business really so opposed to Edwards’ favorite policies?

Tim reports. You can deride.
The policy: Addressing global warming. His corporate ally: General Electric.
The policy: Universal health care. His corporate allies: Basically, the entire health care sector.

“These big businesses and their lobbyists are backing government takeovers of our energy and health sectors not out of “cowardice” or good will, but out of the profit motive. They have positioned themselves to benefit from big government, and their lobbying is just part of the investment,” Carney writes. “But John Edwards needs to maintain his class-warfare narrative in order to rile the crowds. As long as his supporters and the media don’t check his facts, it might just work.”

carney's going to get indicted for backdating his posts one of these days.

Carney's theory of big business in bed with big government, aka fascism, is why Ron Paul is a threat to the status quo. Thish explains why the big corporate owned media, otherwise known as "The most awesome god damn propaganda force in the whold godless world", is accused of doing all it can to keep Joe and Jane Sixpack from realizing that Ron Paul's politics may be what is best for them.

Pooper Scooper's inept boosterism, aka astroturfing, is why Ron Paul will never succeed as a legitimate political force. Ron Paul is a libertarian; he wants to make government something you really don't have to think about. And yet he is the only thing his supporters are able to talk about.

haha. i was expecting to read a great investigative piece on how edwards is in bed with the same corporations he purports to oppose. instead the piece makes the incredible argument that corporations are actually fighting hard for universal healthcare and sound environmental protections, relying on a few lobbying examples to make the point! amazing! if that's the sharpest axe that national review has for edwards, i think i've found my new favorite candidate.

I don't know what it is about Ron Paul's Candidacy that attracts the oddest elements of society, I suppose they yearn not to have other people's values imposed upon them. But his message is legitimate and that is what matters. What Paul needs to do is use the $10 million he's raised this quarter and hire PR professionals to try to get his message out as broadly and as sanely as possible in the remaining days before the primary.

Given the lack of proper editing in most (i.e. all) posts, I move for Carney changing his title.

Random Banker,

Ron Paul has raised $18.2 million and counting this quarter.

Which Carney is afraid of the "STARTLING POWERFUL HOMOSEXUAL LOBBY"?!

And which Carney is jealous that he can not afford to get a decent haircut?

THEY REPORT. YOU CAN DECIDE.

Gumbel needs heavy sensitivity training

By Timothy P. Carney
July 21, 2000

"Bryant Gumbel called Bob Knight of the Family Research Council (FRC) a “f***ing idiot” on CBS’s Early Show, June 29, but the national media barely noticed. This may surprise many Americans, but not those who have been following Gumbel’s career and the media’s craven pandering to the startlingly powerful homosexual lobby."

RB @4:47 Ron Paul's message is legitimate? Its more of a series of slogans that do not stand up at all to any sort of scrutiny.

Posted by Random Banker, Dec 17, 2007 5:19PM

Freedom doesn't stand up to scrutiny? The Constitution, is no talking point, no slogan. As much as I am a fan of capitalism and the consumerism. The current state of deficit spending in this country is unsustainable. While I'm no member of the "China owns your mortgage" chorus, the United States government can't not continue to spend more than it brings unless we're going to inflate our way out of our debt.

Hey, "iheart banking," I'm wondering what would constitute proof of John Edwards being in bed with the corporate interests he supposedly opposes. Tim showed that they're lobbying for the very policies he is advocating. What else do you want? I'm sure I can ask my brother to dig that up too.

Seriously, Edwards is one of the biggest phonies in politics today. That does not necessarily make him the worst candidate for president, as phonies can sometimes be better office holders than genuine maniacs. But it's astonishing to run into anyone who cannot see Edwards for what he is.
