Apparently, There's A Primary In New Hampshire Tonight

We don’t spend too much time on politics unless it is happening in a far-away land. For instance, we’ve been studying up on the nineteen-year-old successor to the murdered Pakistani opposition leader but couldn’t tell you anything about how Hillary Clinton’s plans to separate people from their money from Barack Obama’s. Or whether John McCain’s plans to rollback allegedly rogue regimes are any more realistic than those of Rudolph Giuliani (who is somehow still running for president). Mitt Romney worked for Bain once but appears to be the worst campaigning politician in recent memory who is not a Greek from Massachusetts.

Our political friends tell us that McCain will win tonight in New Hampshire, and Obama will thoroughly trounce Clinton. (Although too strong a showing among independents by Obama could hurt McCain's chances.) Neither of these gentlemen is especially a friend of Wall Street. Both can be expected to sign into law the tax hikes sure to be passed by the Democrat controlled houses on Capitol Hill. Both can be expected to support more regulation and bureaucracy, and less political and economic liberty. If we made little progress against the rapid growth of government during the Bush years, we can expect even less under either of these gentlemen.

But its also likely that the doomsday scenarios emanating from some pundits are over-wrought. The Greenspan era policies of low-interest rates and the Republican Congress encouraged government spending growth probably did more damage to the economic health of the Republic than any Clinton tax-hike ever did. There may not be too much good news for investors and Wall Street coming from New Hampshire tonight except for this: this too shall pass.

Carney with all do respect (and by that I mean absolutely none for this rather dim witted commentary), "political liberty" akin to over-riding consitutional and international law is not something we should be glorifying.

"Neither of these gentlemen is especially a friend of Wall Street."

Well, neither is Wall Street.

Perhaps a more germane question is:
"Which candidate is more likely to promote healthy, medium to long-term growth of the economy?"

Posted by , Jan 08, 2008 4:14PM

There is no such thing as "international law," ya floozie.

Stick to Erin B boob sightings and Seth Tobias rumors.

Or maybe the peasants are about to take up their pitchforks. Could be the reasond behind the support for Obama and Huckabee. We forget being in NY that things are rough out there. Job creation sucks (luke warm numbers combined with crappy jobs - unless you like serving meals and emptying bedpans and no prospect for improvment) and income disparity is approaching levels like those just prior to the French revolution. Dobson keeps stoking the believers. And its apparent to anyone that under the current system candidates are being bought by the highest bidders, on both sides of the aisle. I'm thinking of moving to Italy. At least the food is better.

Clinton raised taxes, balanced the fucking budget and th economy blasted off so high that you could buy stocks drunk in the morning and wake up rich in the PM.

George cut taxes, leveraged up to fight the fucking war and you can't afford to be drinking in the morning.

Seems clear to me.

Phenominal OpEd piece in the journal today - Great (American) Expectations. In sum: quit your bitching americans.

True story: while waiting for the train on my way to ktown yesterday there was a dirty hippy singing immaculate collection-era madonna over a 9in box - between songs she would extoll the virtues of communism in countries like cuba - their phenominal healthcare, education system etc. Right after "holiday" i threw her onto the tracks where she got powned by an e train.
In sum: quit your bitching americans.

geez HAM and here i thought we could heal the world with our lovely poetry...

You're onto something though. People need to either find a candidate they believe in and endorse them all the way, or shut the fuck up. Spreading negativity about the American political process isn't really taking us anywhere.

Actually, the bush years have moved us pretty forcefully in the opposite direction, so that the above quote sounds a bit like beginning a sentence, "If Lee Harvey Oswald did little to enhance the popularity of open-air drives through downtown Dallas...."

@ 4:50 : If I didn't believe in the people's potential to affect change I wouldn't believe in the ideals upon which this country was built. People have become so disillusioned with politics that they use it to excuse their apathy- I think if we see a great deal more political participation on an individual level and take more ownership over the society we live in we might be able to do so. Having interned for a senator I saw firsthand how repeat phone calls and letters from concerned constituents actually can make a difference on bills passed.

At the very least I urge people to vote for whomever they believe in on a number of issues, as opposed to voting for wall street. That's not a choice I would be proud of.

The USA gave bush 43 two terms (an idiot with next to no foreign relations experience and his "real" economic experience consisted of losing bush 41's money). So now it looks like the next two leading candidates (obama and huckabee) are cut from the same novice cloth as bush 43 (minus cheney).
No wonder the USA is currently one giant short!

Posted by Anominous, Jan 08, 2008 6:59PM

Carney sows the wind.

5:43-

read some Angus Maddison + Bill Bernstein. the textbooks you skimmed between sessions at the kegerator are just a tad one-sided in their selection + presentation of evidence.

best real GDP + stock market performance among major economies, 20th century: Sweden.

top U.S. marginal income tax rate during period of fastest per capita and overall real GDP growth in the 20th century (and not bad for stocks either): 91%.

(cue howling)

Acknowledged that that is tendentious citation of facts as well, but I know traditional econ and it just ain't that simple.

Posted by , Jan 08, 2008 7:17PM

What's not simple about a record Dow, no debt, huge annual real estate appreciation and the market raining money? I mean, compared to, say, now?

Posted by , Jan 08, 2008 7:19PM

By the way, hang in there, girl.

Posted by John Carney, Jan 08, 2008 10:24PM

It's especially awkward since Hillary has "won" tonight regardless of whether or not she wins tonight. She's done much better than expected, which, as we all know, is all that counts.

Posted by Anonymous, Jan 08, 2008 10:34PM

Carney, NBC just projected her victory tonight. Run for the hills.

Posted by Hugh, Jan 08, 2008 11:35PM

Sorry Carney, looks like Hillary (the Dem friend of the Street), won tonight. Now the question remains, would a Dem congress in tandem with Hillary enact a host of big gov programs or return us to fiscal sanity?

I fear the former

Posted by John Carney, Jan 08, 2008 11:47PM

The "comeback kid" strikes again.

A few quick takes and we'll probably repeat these tomorrow morning.

1) Hillary won. Those Clinton's really are that good.

2) Obama's speech was incredible.

3) Did someone give McCain an ambein before his victory speech?

Posted by i find girl interesting, Jan 09, 2008 12:08AM

ah girl, i do find your logic interesting on Hill. Obama is indeed someone a lib like yourself would find exciting - and I've seen that even though I don't lean his direction politically.

I lean right and occasionally snap into libertarian mindset, and so somewhere between Huckabee and RPaul I find interesting. Ideally someone with the charisma of Huckabee and a mix of the ideas/stances of Paul maybe would be nice.

But i think this whole debate is BS considering the economic issues we have in front of us that would eclipse these crazy horse races. And all those Americans who are neck-deep in debt and expect to exercise some power in this country or in the world, you will discover you are enslaved by your debt...as it will become evident that the borrower is servant to the lender.

Posted by Disinterested Observer, Jan 09, 2008 1:30AM

I can't really believe John Carney himself wrote the posts at 10:24 and 11:47 pm. Maybe the 10:24 pm post, but not the 11:47 pm post. It had far too many typos.

If John Carney did make the post at 11:47 pm, then I agree with him on one point. Barack Obama did indeed make an incredible speech. And I'm far from an Obama supporter.

But even when I'm in awe of Obama's ability, I find myself scoffing at his naivete. It's never been wrong to hope in America? What if you were Woodrow Wilson? Or Jimmy Carter?

Posted by Finn, Jan 09, 2008 2:04AM

What's most interesting is the power of Hillary's machine, in that she can win by only 3% in New Hampshire after having her wide load handed to her in Iowa, and it can be portrayed by the yabbering heads on ABC as an amazing comeback.

If Hillary won by 3% in a lily white state, there is no way she will beat Obama nearly everyplace else, where the ethnic vote (aka black) will tilt his way. The numbers don't favor her.

This moment is her political orgasm and it's all down hill from here.

Posted by girl, Jan 09, 2008 9:15AM

@ suck my balls (grt name by the way), I think its the fact that Hillary's team reallyattacked aggressivelly in new hampshire with mailings to peoples homes, cold calls, etc. She has a great deal of funding and therefore alot more staffers than her dem counterparts.

On the other hand if it was the crying, then women are dumber than i thought and i'll be the first to say it.

Fascinating speech on Obama's part. And I Mcain was definitely on something stronger than Ambien- special K?

Posted by Suck My Balls '08, Jan 09, 2008 9:24AM

at risk of revealing my sexist ways i will just say that for some reason i don't think attacking aggressively is an approach that won the hearts of many women voters in NH, but maybe i am wrong, they are pretty tough mountain folk up there. one of the main complaints from women about hil over the years has been her tough-guy attitude is all.

i dunno about mccain. best thing he could do is stop reading speeches entirely. even victory speeches. his prepared remarks are just painful to hear.
