If LM didn't manipulate AMZN then what would it's book really look like???
Probably a lot like the rest of them

@ 5:26 -
Last time I checked, this was a site that allowed for Carney, et. al. to post whatever news they saw fit. Unless, I'm missing some sort of memo that stated otherwise.
If you don't like it, then DON'T READ IT
Plain & Simple.

Pink,
Not just Carney. Us as well!!! For instance - I just farted and the rumor is that I will be declared the CEO of the stinky salutation (at least in the interim....while it lasts).

Today was the slowest and most boring day of 2008. This is big news on a day like today.

Carney and (Joe) Weisenthal have earned the right to post whatever they want.

b/c bess wasn't here today

carney hasn't earned shit. bess is the only one who's earned the right to post what she wants b/c she's the only funny one here (plus keith ...)

You guys realize that Bess and John work together and collaborate on these pieces, right? That Bess writes funny, crazed nonsense while Carney plays the straight guy who actually knows about stuff.
You can see it in the way they break down topics. Carney writes the longer, deeper thought pieces and genuine news while Bess gets the juicy scandal bits. So Carney does proxy-access and Bess does Epstein.
Bess can write more seriously but doesn't because that's not her role. Carney can write hilarious pieces, and used to do more of it here and at Gawker. Now they have a division of labor. It's an act, designed to create a fuller website that is both informative and humorous.

Your analysis of the site captures the dynamic, but you forgot about (Joe) Weisenthal. Without (Joe) Weisenthal there would be no opening bell. Without (Joe) Weinsenthal there would be no cheerleading for Detroit sports teams on the site. Carney may be the straight man ("longer, deeper thought pieces") and Bess may be the clown ("juicy scandal bits"), but (Joe) Weisenthal keeps the site together as the author of the opening bell post.

I've heard talk that they may be expanding Joe's role at the site. Nothing certain but he may soon be doing a lot more than opening bell.

For months now it's seemed like both Bess and John have been distracted / often gone, like maybe they have new full time jobs and DB is only part time. Other than Joe's opening bell there are often no new posts til around 11am ot later. The posts have gotten fewer and further between. And even Bess' posts have changed. Sometimes they're really short. Sometimes they're not about Wall Street at all. It almost seems like she's at a place where she has limited access to news, and she posts something - anything - just to give her fans a taste. Is she posting from that new Blackberry she got? Is that why she got it?
Is it my imagination, or does something seems to be going on at DB? And now we have a hint that Joe's role may be expanding. Is he going to be editing the site instead of John? And Bess is going to be writing at Muffie's site. Come on DB, something is going on, something is changing. Please let your readers know.

@MS
Where'd you get that one? and how would any supposed manipulation of one position have any impact on "it's book"...

I ran into Carney at a party the other week and here's the impression I got from him. They have been looking for several months for a new hire to replace Keith. The site has struggled with understaffing for months because two people is too few for a site like DealBreaker. Someone gets sick, goes on vacation, even needs to run an errand and the site is left with just one person responsible for the entire thing. They need to beef up their ranks to keep up quality. In short, Carney is staying on, Bess is staying and they want a new person--Joe? Everett? Myrna?--to bolster the team.
Also, he mentioned plans for more posts and possible new kinds of offerings. Video? Longer features? Bess doing interviews? It sounded like all of the above.

Bess doing interviews is the best option (if you have to choose one). Even if they are fake, they never fail to crack me up.

i still dont care abt the original post
i still laugh at you ppl who are so staunch in your position of defending the kids, even when the posts are dumb...i love the site, i think it's great, but sometimes the posts are dumb- sometimes i do dumb things at work too. constructive criticism is not bad
i also suspect mr pink is carneys gay lover- but whatevs.
@ just laid off- if you saw carney at a party and he told you all this, it must have been the very beginning of the party while he was still coherent
