Yesterday we received an outrageous tip that Goldman Sachs would no longer be providing free soda and water to its employees. Exponentially more outrageous? The line we got not ten minutes ago: “That GS free soda story is bull shit. The only free stuff at the buildings I’ve been at (1NYP, 85 Broad, 180ML and 30 Hudson) is bad coffee and two kinds of milk to go with it.” I know, you can barely see straight. I’ll address our collective rage in two parts. Part one is: the minor matter of the fact that two kinds of milk fails to adequately address the needs of even your most low maintenance java drinkers—at the bare minimum there should be a choice of whole, skim, soy and half-and-half. Part two is: Lloyd Craig Blankfein, people, this is a disgrace! Goldman Sachs taking away freebies when times are tough and it’s not like employees can take a stand and get jobs elsewhere is one thing. Goldman Sachs never providing freebies in the first place is quite another. And don't try telling me you don’t care because you do care, we all care. This changes everything and not in a good way. Feel free to retreat to your crying rooms at this time. I'll let you know if and when we get evidence to the contrary, and it's safe to come out.

Bess gets a fresh load of cottage cheese in her panties for all things Goldman.

Goldie and Lehman went to the Discount window to borrow money last night... Since when does Goldie borrow at a premium to fed funds?
Screw free drinks, goldie had to stand in line and ask for money yesterday...
Lehman needed 2 Billion or so to balance the books last night... Hello Kids... Something stinks in Denmark and its not the fish...
or said another way... something new is broken in Bankland...

Pre-dot com bubble burst there were not only free drinks but daily fruit baskets at 1 NYP. Then the internets ruined everything.

I read that on Monday (or maybe Tuesday as well) LEH had higher CDS prices than the country of Nigeria. I think that causes liquidity to become expensive in the short-term and thus the discount window comes into play. It seems like a crisis of confidence across the industry that is still not resolved.

@12:24 - and they changed some floor, I think it was 39, into a "hip floor" to compete with the dotcoms. It had like, "collaborative workspaces" and "kicky furniture" and "lots of vending machines".
Oh, and also during the dotcom era the firm launched a "coolness task force" - i kid you not.

cody still bummed about being dumped!

IIRC The biggest auditorium space you can get is at 30H... never actually worked there outside of a handful of meetings.
Posted by guest, Mar 19, 2008 12:38PM
30H has quite a few GS people and is not as empty as you might think/remember. I work with software dev with REDIPlus.
I have a 917 number so you won't really even know I'm in JC...
Posted by guest, Mar 19, 2008 12:45PM
oh, BTW, any REDIPlus constructive feedback welcome. I can get that channeled through to proper people.
Posted by guest, Mar 19, 2008 1:22PM
Who above the age of 12 drinks fizzy drinks anyway?
Posted by guest, Mar 19, 2008 1:23PM
@12.45,
Can you setup a pull for CDS quotes? Also, don't laugh to hard, but is there anyway to track cash levels in REDIplus? I know know, if I have REDIplus I don't need to worry about cash levels... but still, it would be nice to know the level real leverage your running... In the current market conditions we are in.

Here is how it works: If you are a trader you have your assistant get anything you want. Mocha skim latte? You got it. Stand in line at Chipotle? You got it.
If you are not a trader...tough luck. Sorry kids ...if you are an IT grease monkey and want nice digs and free sandwiches & red bull you'll have to go to Citadel where all the shiz is free.
Posted by guest, Mar 19, 2008 2:11PM
on the trading floors on 1 NYP and 85 Broad they had those huge trash cans full of soda and water when i worked there last year.
Posted by guest, Mar 19, 2008 2:16PM
What a bunch of whiny pissant slackers... you need food delivered or you send an assistant? No wonder we have an obesity problem.
I just went down to Shake Shack ON MY OWN and got my own goddamn Shack burger. Do I win a prize?
Posted by guest, Mar 19, 2008 2:19PM
Agreed, Citadel had the best food and bevvie hookup anyplace i have worked. Even a freezer section with ice cream bars and stuff on every floor. That was the life.
Posted by guest, Mar 19, 2008 2:28PM
I am a trader while I do software development, but it's my own money. Rewards are better monetarily than ice cream bars and small crap like that. Or you can lose 3x your two week paycheck on a given day.
Back in the days of Lava Trading, I knew there were snacks, snapples, OJ on Tusedays, bagels each Fri, coffee, foosball table was all free (even for IT etc.), it was pretty cool but when it was all gone...the biggest hit was the dropping of the plastic forks and milk for coffee. Most of it was high in sugar/corn syrup/fat and was better gone than making us all fat and lethargic.
The culture is a much bigger perk, and the milk and forks would really help to maintain the fact that higher ups really do care...
Um, with regard to getting a Shack Burger, let's just say you probably also contribute to the obesity problem? How about a chicken salad or something more in-line with your metabolism?
Posted by guest, Mar 19, 2008 2:29PM
@1:23, I have passed along your feedback. Thx.
Just celebrated a birthday of a REDIPlus dev. That was pretty cool. Cupcakes included... :)
Posted by guest, Mar 19, 2008 2:40PM
You do not cast aspersions about Shake Shack, sir. That's worse than spreading false rumors about Lehman. The SEC will be looking into your wildly irresponsible suggestion that a Shack Burger might be unhealthy.

Anyone try the new Burger place on Water Street yet?
Posted by guest, Mar 19, 2008 6:28PM
@1:58PM
AGain more bullshit... I've worked with traders and sales folk at NYP; they usually grab something either from the little coffee stand on 50th or go run down to 47th or whatever floor is the cafeteria on. Traders on the floor don't have individual secretaries, only a couple of floor admins.
