Layoffs Watch '08: 'Oil Prices Are Too High, Folks. We're Going To Have To Let Some Of You Go. Revenue Pressure, You Know How It Is.'

BP has supposedly relieved about 150 employees ("Front office, some traders included") of their duties. No word on severance.

No no, those 150 people are the ones who designed their "Beyond Petroleum" campaign.

BP.......just have to shake my head. You can bet the Shell traders are having a high five orgy on that news.

Nothing new here. BP Canada punted about 75 employees about 3 months ago. 2 day/wk consultants were knocked back to 1 day every 2 weeks. Some re-orgs in NGL groups. Managers in Houston were left without portfolios and some were scrambling back to their "home country" looking for a desk.

BP - at least here in Calgary - couldn't fasten the velcro on their shoes without help from their consultants.

Last week, a consultant tabled an idea that could potentially save $50M. It was rejected more than once. The consultant then asked the legal department sign-off that he could take the idea to other shops. No problem-o, they said.

Companies operating like that should be thumped now and then in the hope that it might pound a bit of sense into them.
