Rice Price Shock: Just Think Happy Thoughts!

Just because you are very far from Wall Street doesn't mean the pie is no longer situation in the sky. Just a day after Vietnam shocked this part of the world with record setting prices for kind-of-crappy rice, traders and analysts began spreading the word that rice prices are bound to come back down to earth once those damned little Philipinos have bought their share.

Rice futures don't care, however, and continue to rise based on fears that exporting countries may impose curbs to keep domestic supplies high and prices low. Governments all across South East Asia fear the popular backlash from high domestic rice rpices. China already has quotas in place, as do Egypt, Vietnam and India. Thailand could be next.

Some savvy investors say global food trends--corn being turned into fuel, for instance--are driving up demand for rice. As other grains and carb sources are chewed up by the green revolution, the world may increasingly turn to rice (already the most popular food on the planet). More corn in the gas tank means less rice in the curry.

Did he just mention Vietnam? Does that mean we can discuss the Vietnamese Dong? Who here is long on the Dong? I hear the Dong is increasing just about every day and is ready to explode! Perhaps JC can go to Vietnam and ask them what they think about the value of their Dongs... It would suck to have a worthless Dong.

Posted by guest, Apr 23, 2008 12:47PM

DONG is the name of a Danish oil company. It's almost as funny as when Powergen opened an ofice in Italy and one of their MBAs didn't see the risks of a company called ......
"Powergen Italia"......no wonder energy traders used to destroy more capital than any other....but...the debt guys have taken that honor now.

I don't get the powergen Italia comment. Can you pls explain what's so unbecoming?

Posted by guest, Apr 23, 2008 12:58PM

Are you that MBA? Say it out loud. In fact, if you are in a crowded office, shout it.

power genitalia...come on.

Those fat asians could stand to be on the Atkins diet. Cut the carbs and get down from 90lbs to 75lbs while saving the aggrevation of spending more for a nutritionless product.

To another point, does this mean I should stop using the term "Rice Burner?"

I'm not sure how the diversion of corn from food to fuel translates into rice shortages. No one has been able to complete that connection, although allegations that they're linked have appeared regularly in the media.

The New York Times reported a few days ago that the rice shortage has been caused by a six-year draught in a large area in rural Australia that had been very efficiently growing rice for export. That seems more sensible than the corn/rice explanation.

Rice shortages are no joke. Riots have already been reported in a number of countries, the U.N.'s major food program has plead for economic relief, and mass human starvation in the poorest areas of the world is feared.

asians need mcdonalds and french fries so they can recycle their dollars back here.

I heard rice makes them constipated so its not good for them anyway. Especially if they're gay.

@2:48 Perhaps the peasants should eat cake instead...

Posted by guest, Apr 23, 2008 3:10PM

@3.o2 - rice cakes?

Posted by guest, Apr 23, 2008 3:57PM

@3:10 Good one. I was thinking more in terms of the French Revolution, but rice cakes will work too.

Per ADB, there is no rice shortage, just high food prices.

This "damned little Philipino" (sic) isn't so little and can kick your ass for making stupid, uneducated comments like that.

I sure hope for your sake, "John Carney" is your professional name.
