JPMorgan: Viva* Los Layoffs

It seems like all we ever hear about is what a nice guy Jamie Dimon is, and how he's a "giant among midgets" and his souvlaki is out of this world, but the direction he's taking Bearpont Morgan Chase** is deeply disturbing and very much brings his judgment into question.

Not two weeks ago JPMorgan's head of Latin American Credit, along with four MD's and one ED were laid off for reasons related to "cost cutting and expenses." Today we're told that a JPM director paid a visit to 383 Madison this morning to fire all but two analysts from Bear's Latam Research division, telling the peasants, "As you probably realize, we cannot take you on and as you may or may not be aware, JPMorgan decided to keep the headcount the same as before the merger. So now, you are free to look for other jobs." Obviously we knew that there would be (severance-saddled) victims in this whole thing but the fact that Jamie Dimon can't spare a few pesos to keep the group which inspired "Project Awesome" (the fictional Latam division of the fictional JS Spencer bank which spent most of its time chilling in Cabo with the odd Brazilian mention in Dana Vachon's Mergers and Acquisitions) fully intact is a hard pill to swallow and quite nearly criminal. To Dimon's credit, however, he apparently was instrumental in coming up with the line, "You are free to look for other jobs," which was inspired. (Especially after he asked everyone to stay put for the last several months and requested that other banks hold off on hiring Bear employees until he could decide who would be getting fired.)

*It's funnier than "vivan."
**Not yet official, just in the hopper. Also under consideration: JPMorgan Cayne, the reasoning being that "this whole thing would never have happened without JC's inspired management of Bear."

I heard there have been massive layoffs at every level across the investment bank at JPMorgan today.

any hot jpm female bankers who need a little tlc and know how to massage, leave a note. If you can host, thats a big plus!

It's not just today... they are slowing letting go 4,000 JPMorgan IB employees to make way for the 3,000 BSC employees they want to keep. The extra 1,000 are to "contain costs".

Viva Bearpont Morgan Chase

I would be shocked if you ever heard from anyone what a nice guy JD is

Posted by blndebnker, May 22, 2008 1:55PM

@1:51pm - Agreed. I dated someone whose mom used to be his personal secretary back at Citi years ago and said he is the biggest prick.

blndebnkr = dipshit, annoying like a gnat.

4K JPM IBD employees? each FT class is only 180....how the hell do they even have 4K to let go?!

Posted by guest, May 22, 2008 2:19PM

what is 'vivan'? is that some mexican language stuff?

Posted by guest, May 22, 2008 2:29PM

@2:16 - the 4k includes front office, tech and ops (middle office). IB as a whole is around 20k if memory serves, but I'm not positive I'm in the ballpark. Tech alone has over 4k.

Also there are some areas being merged from BCS that JPM doesn't count as "IB" per se.

JPM employees being let go are sans package... just 3 months severance and 60 days notice.

Posted by guest, May 22, 2008 2:32PM

they shouldnt even get one days notice - just fire their ass and throw their stuff in a dumpster

Posted by guest, May 22, 2008 2:53PM

Apparently Bess isn't up on her Vachon. The group chilled in Mexico, not Brazil, which would have made that bizzaro interlude infinitely better.

Rumor has it, there were quite a few stiff letters of "no work for you" that went out today to all of fixed income at Bear. Nobody noticed?

Posted by guest, May 22, 2008 4:48PM

nobody cares about the losers at bear. they're like yesterdays toilet paper - flushed away and forgotten.

Posted by guest, May 22, 2008 6:23PM

Now that's not nice. Or true.

Posted by guest, May 22, 2008 8:32PM

Merrill Lynch was just as warm & fuzzy. The HR department called people up on the phone and fired them. when they asked if they could come back and get their stuff they were told no. this happened mostly to the specialist & their staff. Be carefull of answering your phone at the end of the day

Nice lay-off stories. Bloomberg posted a while back about the 4K employees Dimon planned to lay-off at JP Morgan, so it's not really news.

Apparently things are reaching an end-point at Bear. Remember, May 29 is the Bear Stearns shareholder vote. Next week! DB should take down the poll about the vote; now that JP Morgan has 49+% of the stock, does anyone have a doubt about how the vote will go?

Dimon doesn't care if he's not considered a nice guy. He's been officially declared a giant among midgets!

"Losers at bear ... flushed away and forgotten." Not.

The bearites are spamming everyone with their resumes. I just throw 'em out when I get them. Dont want to hear about their issues. I simply asked the first one who I interviewed, why, if you're so good/smart, did jpm not hire you? He answered...they cant afford me...I said..but you're out of work now..he said..yeah, but why should i work for less...I wished him well, and will, never see another ex-bearites.

Posted by guest, May 23, 2008 7:43AM

How is it NOT illegal to ask other people not to hire Bear employees?

Posted by guest, May 23, 2008 9:58AM

@7:41

Nice...I'm sure bear's janitorial service employees were overpaid, and you feel like a big shot...

Who cares who YOU ever see...

I suppose Dimon can say what he wants, as long as he's not interfering with an established business relationship, committing slander, or intentionally inflicting emotional damage on a specific person. Employment at this level is only regulated by specific contracts and general tort law.

Dimon did put out a general appeal early on (I read it in the WSJ) not to hire Bear people until JP Morgan had a chance to settle into the takeover. I thought it was pretty ballsy at the time. At that point, senior people were fleeing in droves. Dimon had Bear take two senior Bears who were attempting to leave to court in New York and enforced their employment contract, which required something like 60 days notice to the employer before they were entitled to leave. I don't know what happened in every individual case (obviously) but things seemed to settle down after the court ruling.

I know one very productive senior guy at Bear who has been wooed by Dimon since early April. He's had several other very lucrative offers. He has asked JP Morgan to give him until the end of May to make his choice. He plans to walk away at the very last minute and take his whole team with him, as a last long salute to Dimon.

It's still open situations like that that are driving JP Morgan crazy. They overcompensate by twisting the arms of the more recent people they have offered jobs to, demanding answers within two or three days.

@9.58--right, Bear was a great firm that made oodles of money, thats why they got dumped by the mkt.

You sound like the typical bear - it wasnt my fault, I simply followed orders

good luck getting a job douchebag...hahaha

you got what you deserve - NOTHING!!!

@10:09

I gave up name calling many years ago..not even your infantile rantings and smug self-superiority won't change that.

I do not work for Bear.....I have many friends who did (some now will work for JPM and some won't).

The market moves on
