Someone Hire This Man (Specifically Looking For A Gig In Asset Valuation Management But Will Take What He Can Get)

joshuaperksy.jpg
Perhaps you've already seen him walking up and down Park these last couple days and are well aware of his plight, but Joshua Persky, the guy wearing a sandwich board proclaiming his education and current career goals ("experienced MIT grad for hire"), needs a job. The non-practicing investment banker, most recently with Houlihan Lokey, has been out of work for the last six months and, not having had any success with head hunters or calling in favors with friends, will be passing out resumes to random midtown passersby during lunch hour all this week.

We spoke with Persky briefly just now and while he did not offer up any references who could speak to the quality of his work (fishy), he did give us his job history (2 years at Houlihan Lokey, 2 years in commercial banking at Fortis Capital, 4 years in business development for a satellite network communications company, a decade or so doing technical writing, a year on the AMEX floor as an assistant options trader), a number (917-650-8700) and e-mail (joshuapersky@hotmail.com) where you, potential job-giver, can reach him. Perhaps it's the fact that a grown man is being reduced to working the streets, or that he has a wife and FIVE children to support (who are moving back to her hometown of Nebraska when their lease runs out this month), but this is just depressing the hell out of us, even worse than Sad Kermit (SFW, unless your employer has a problem with a Muppet shooting heroin or blowing Rowlf for money, in which case, quit).

who still rents after working for nearly 20 years.....head out to cornhusker country with your wife and 5 kids(5????)

2

Posted by Peon, Jun 24, 2008 12:24PM

Maybe his wife should work the streets with him... it's clear she likes to put out.

3

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 12:25PM

whoo...5 kids. I'm a dude and my vagina hurts after knowing that.

This guy should just move to another city and cut his losses.

4

Posted by bittergreen, Jun 24, 2008 12:29PM

Sweet. I'm in the market for investment bankers who walk around the street wearing sandwich boards. Would a check for $5 million be enough?

5

Posted by Investorcluzo, Jun 24, 2008 12:36PM

I'm not sure what's more depressing?
a) the fact that I actually watched a 4 minute video of kermit performing fellatio on gonzo and shooting up;
b) seeing some dude wearing a ridiculous sign (is that the best the mit career center could come up with?); or
c) having 5 kids and a wife in a rental after 2 decades of work...(clearly he wasn't one of the guys "printing money").

who seriously has a hotmail account these days?

7

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 12:43PM

yeah its funny but my biggest gripe with this dude (douche?) is the hotmail address...cmon buddy try to pretend you have some semblance of class...at least get yahoo

8

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 12:44PM

someone should seriously check if he even went to MIT or worked at those firms. sounds like a loser if he doesnt have a few mill$ saved up after all that time.

9

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 12:47PM

"I'm a dude and my vagina hurts after knowing that."

you should kill yourself for saying that

11

Posted by Clown Capital , Jun 24, 2008 12:50PM

5 KIDS!?! WTF!? Get a clue clown. You work on wall street, not a farm. Maybe if you spent more time "working" and less time trying to put your wife through the f%4&ing wall at night, you wouldn't be in such an ignominous predicament...

12

Posted by Anal_yst, Jun 24, 2008 12:53PM

@ 12:50

Clearly, as you've pointed out, is that this guy spent too much time "trying to put his wife through the wall" at night, instead of cushing it at scores with "clients".

13

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 12:53PM

Bess that is clearly not Gonzo. Gonzo is a blue alien with a large nose. That is Rowlf, the piano playing dog.

Are you people serious???

that's fozzy bear getting head.

15

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 12:57PM

Persky man, you should just seriously move back to Nebraska with your wife and family.

How pathetic are you? Get a job in Nebraska; the living expenses there are much lower and you can probably find some job there (teaching, tech stuff, agriculture????)

16

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 12:58PM

Dude has only been a i-banker for 2 years, its clear he changed careers. Ease off on the "should have been crushing it for the past 20" comments.

Best of luck Josh. In all seriousness, a regional outside NYC may be a good bet.

First pelicans that are actually egrets, now Gonzo instead of Rowlf, are you effen kidding me, guys?!

19

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 1:05PM

there is so much wrong with this situation i dont even know where to start other than pointing out MIT scrambling to retroactively kick this guy out of their alumni base.

20

Posted by Investorcluzo, Jun 24, 2008 1:12PM

@12:53/12:54/1:03 - correct, definitely not gonzo (I was misled by bessy). I'm going with rowlf (long floppy ears) not fozzie (sans hat).

@1:03 - creator of the instant classic. indeed a good line (full credit is given to "guest"), however, it must be altered to fit the context.

Forgetting for a second that, yes, this guy should have saved money and provided better for his fam (5 kids??), you gotta give credit where credit is due: this dude has balls. How many of you would have the courage/humility to get out there and beg for a job??

32

Posted by girl, Jun 24, 2008 1:40PM

@ Clown Capital

As one of five children (we do a pretty awesome rendition of "so long, farewell, auf wiedersen, adieu") I can say with certainty that being a workaholic and putting one's mother 'through a bleeping wall' on a normal basis are not mutually exclusive.

33

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 1:40PM

Saw a kid walking down Wall with one of those boards, looking for an internship. Couldn't get the cam out fast enough for a picture. Sad to see a professional having to resort to that. Forget Nebraska, move East.

34

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 1:43PM

This guy is clearly an alien... He has all the characteristics of an extraterrestrial being...

Definitely do NOT hire this Area 51 freakshow...

Morever, he doesn't only regularly impregnate his alien wife with his flourescent orange semen (a.k.a hue de la Mozillo) but also managed to impregnate the old guy behind him by just getting within a 10 foot radius...

35

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 1:45PM

Can you really call yourself an "investment banker" if you work at Houlihan Lokey?

36

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 1:50PM

@1:43,

The last part of your 3rd paragraph. Best of the day. Hahaha.

37

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 1:51PM

@ 1:45...

and where do you work, f*ck-o?

38

Posted by I am a Dude, Jun 24, 2008 1:53PM

I passed this guy also at about noon. There was some young buck giving him career advice. you know, pink shirt, spikey blond hair. the kind who flips his pen between his fingers during meetings to show just how talented he is.
And Persky was listening.
If i would have know Bess was coming I would have stuck around.
Most ppl don't consider Houlihan an I-Bank. they're ok for valuations and distressed shit where they've convinced the management thy aren't really distressed. just in need of new investors who really understand them.
I kinda feel bad for the guy. convinced himself he can be a banker mid-career and the only place that would look at him is Houlihan. Now that they bagged him, all he is left is his sandwich board.
Nebraska here we come!

39

Posted by JimBob, Jun 24, 2008 1:54PM

I was pretty drunk last night, but I think I stopped by Houlihan Lokey for last call, isn't that on 2nd Ave in the 80"s?

40

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 1:59PM

"How many of you would have the courage/humility to get out there and beg for a job?? "

It is not called courage/humility but retardedness. If 25 years out of an institute like MIT one has to BEG for a job on the streets, then that person is just a load on planet earth.

41

Posted by american bandersnatch, Jun 24, 2008 2:01PM

JimBob: I had the same problem. Houlihan Smith and Houlihan Lokey won't serve me booze and Houlihan's gave me a crappy fairness opinion on a cocktail napkin.

42

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 2:01PM

The only reason JimBob was out getting drunk on a Monday night was because he got axed from Morgan Joseph the week before

43

Posted by JimBob, Jun 24, 2008 2:04PM

@2;01

LOL,

Meet you at happy hour at Houlihan Lokey's. Thursday is Bankers's night. Laid off bankers drink for free 5-7 p.m.

44

Posted by blndebnker, Jun 24, 2008 2:07PM

@1:59pm - That man is not a load, he is desperate and trying to do anything he can to save himself and his family. I'm sure he's thinking that by doing this he might drum himself up some sort of publicity that may lead him to a job. Don't be so judgmental and quick to damn someone who is going through a personal trial.

45

Posted by JimBob, Jun 24, 2008 2:07PM

I actually lost my job at Lehman Sisters.

46

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 2:13PM

@ girl,
The only question (from one of four) is whether being a workaholic came out of necessity or was a preexisting condition

47

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 2:14PM

My favorite part is kermit puking and then rocking in the shower... We've all been there.

48

Posted by JimBob, Jun 24, 2008 2:16PM

I'm sure MIT is behind their boy on this one. He has passed over to the other side. In the evening he probably giggles to himself while caressing a loaded .38 revolver while his wife and kids are sleeping. Stay away from this nut job.

49

Posted by Anal_yst, Jun 24, 2008 2:17PM

Wouldn't one think HL would be getting more work with more firms hitting the sh!tter, or at least not suffering the fall-off of larger banks?

50

Posted by I am a Dude, Jun 24, 2008 2:23PM

Anal_yst, there are only so many fairness opinions you can give.

51

Posted by BlackSwan06, Jun 24, 2008 2:23PM

@blndebnker - I totally agree.

Dude might not be elegant, but he's out there hoping his audacity might turn into an opportunity. Can't blame a man for that.

52

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 2:27PM

I find it telling that the only people defending this guy are girl and blndebnker...

Even Bess didn't really tear into him like we know she can...

Makes me wonder what would Erin Callan do?

@ 2:13, pre-existing. You'd have to be a masochist to continue having children otherwise...

57

Posted by blndebnker, Jun 24, 2008 2:40PM

@2:27pm - Maybe it's because we have compassion for people with families and not a cold storage shed where our hearts should be, maybe not. I just know that if this would have happened to my parents, there isn't anything either one of them wouldn't have done to try to get back on their feet, not limited to walking up and down Park looking for a job.

58

Posted by Anal_yst, Jun 24, 2008 2:47PM

agreed with blndebnker, while I might be relegated to a bottle of (increasingly cheap) whiskey, I'm 100% sure my 'rents would do whatever they could to stay/get back in the game. Gotta admire the cajones on this guy, I mean, without knowing the extent/intelligence of his failed "job search" up to this point, at least.

59

Posted by american bandersnatch, Jun 24, 2008 2:48PM

I think it's counterproductive. If some mildy paranoid hedge fund, pe fund or family office is thinking about hiring him and they google his name, this is going to give them second thoughts.

60

Posted by blndebnker, Jun 24, 2008 2:51PM

@AB - You think so? If I was looking into hiring him and all of his other info checked out, I personally would look at this as the behavior of someone who is a motivated, go-getter type.

61

Posted by blndebnker, Jun 24, 2008 2:53PM

P.S. Anal_yst - Don't feel too bad about the cheap whiskey. I'm becoming a cheap merlot girl myself. Desperate times, desperate measures.

62

Posted by FUNdamental, Jun 24, 2008 2:54PM

Since everyone else dove in, I'd like to first give this guy +1 for standing outside in a suit all day...not good times...I'd have to think there must be a better way to go about this, though I'd certainly buy him a shot for his efforts. Crazy act, good family man or stark reminder the world is getting fucking rediculous? I say all of the above, and am glad his sandwich boards are different than bruce willis' from die hard 3.

Enjoy nebraska.

63

Posted by american bandersnatch, Jun 24, 2008 2:55PM

Blndebnker. Fair enough. I work at a publicity shy place where that would be considered a negative (unless the guy doesn't make money but prints it in which case low level felonies would be OK).

64

Posted by guest, Jun 24, 2008 2:57PM

agree with blnde and anal_, i'm quite sure this guy didn't expect to get cut. for those of you laughing, it could be anyone of us holding the old maid.

65

Posted by MF, Jun 24, 2008 2:58PM

@blnde. Motivated, go-getter type... Are you sure you don't work in industry ?

This douche has been in the workforce for 20 years, he is not a freshly minted college graduate in the 80's trying to get an entry-level position on Wall Street.

66

Posted by I am a Dude, Jun 24, 2008 2:58PM

why doesn't dealbreaker cut him a break and hire as an intern?
They need ppl with a little nerve.

67

Posted by blndebnker, Jun 24, 2008 2:58PM

@AB - Yeah I guess it would be dependent upon the shop.

PS I love how that comment is going to live on in Dealbreaker lore forever. It's so versatile. Similar to the bag of smashed assholes and asshattiness. Thank you, Dealbreaker.

68

Posted by blndebnker, Jun 24, 2008 3:01PM

@MF - As I alluded to earlier, I would admire his tenacity and dedication to his family. I feel like anyone who is that determined and bold would be a good asset to have (so long as they have the education, experience and references to prove it which I assuming he does for argument's sake).

Did everyone miss @1:36, Bess getting the words "fucking" and "asshole" in the same sentence? That's hotttt!

76

Posted by Anal_yst, Jun 24, 2008 3:17PM

I think we need (ahem Bess/interns) to get a better idea of this guy's prior job-seeking efforts. If he hasn't exhausted hotjobs/monster/every headhunter in NYC/port authority bathroom yet, then he's definitely jumping the guy and very possibly throwing any chance he may have had of getting hired @ a legitimate shop directly out the window with a premature stunt.

He is not looking for a job at McDo where he would get hired because his tenacity and dedication to his family, or because he is a rehabilitated felon / druggie who is looking to better himself, and therefore 'deserves' a chance.

HomeTOWN of nebraska? nebraska isn't exactly a town. i actually think its a state. And granted, most of us prob couldn't come up with any town in nebraska, prob couldn't find it on a map. it still says a lot about how often the DB team wander off their reservation that is LES and central jersey.

while I'll give him an "a" for effort, I'm going to have to disagree a little. this is complete nonsense! how many of you (with jobs) would hire him? this smacks of our dear friend aleksey (from "impossible is nothing" fame). this is clearly a career limiting decision. as a banker, he should know to keep a low profile. so it isn't currently working out for him - you have to give it time. rome wasn't built in a day and the effin' banks are still firing people. if only he had saved instead of renting the 5 bedroom place in east hampton each summer trying to keep up with the o'neal's/cayne's/callan's...oy vey!

blnde, his devotion and commitment to his family may indeed be appreciable but we are talking of a job hunt here, and that too not a a bricklayer or a fast food worker. If he is indeed targetting the industry that he is, then he is being a total tool in doing that.

Yes, if this was a story about a banker who was working as a construction worker to support his family, I would be blown away. I also 'empathise' with his situation.

However, I totally stand by the comment that he is a retard begging on the streets for a banking job. Does he actually expect someone running a bank or a fund to give a job to someone begging for it on the streets? The ones who actually would are already running orphanages, not banks.

And if you feel so strongly for him, then why dont you get his resume and push the folks at your place for a position for him?

That's because everybody else seems to know that it's short for Nebraska City, NE, in the parlance of our times, and we all take pleasure in your ignorance.

@4:43pm - I see the point you are making and it's valid. I'm just arguing for people to have more of a heart. Like I said, maybe he thinks he'll drum up some feel-good interest story type publicity that will result in something. I didn't say what he was doing was the best approach, I'm just arguing that to judge him and call him a loser, a waste, etc is just wrong. Perhaps he should be looking in another field. That's neither here nor there. I just don't think the guy is a loser or mentally defective for trying this.

And honestly, if I thought I could help him, I totally would try.

1. I feel bad for the guy. While it wouldn't be my preferred job-search method, he now may get a lead or two out of it. I hope he gets something.

2. Anyone who thinks this guy is an outlier in terms of Wall Streeters desperate for gainful employment is misguided -- he's just the leading edge. Wall Street's golden age (1982-2007) is moribund if not dead, and the City is even worse.

I'm actually not from NE, nor have I ever been to NE.

I can, however, find it on a map, as long as the map is a map of Nebraska.

1. I feel bad for the guy.

2. This is stupid on his part - I agree with many of you that this sort of desperation (let alone being in the news with your real name is a career-limiting decision).

3. Maybe he's just to lazy (or naive) to try other avenues. Agree that he could hack it somewhere for a year or 2, but at that age, it's difficult to get back into the market, in my humble opinion.

4. Have some compassion...no one is safe...this market sucks...i know people laid off and who can't get into good B-school (with impressive GMATs, etc.) and are moving out of country for an "international experience"

5. It sucks for everyone. You're a cocky asshole until it's your turn...it happened to me and I was a top performer but my group was screwed. Although I won't resort to that kind of desperation/making an ass of myself.

@ 6:33 - this guy is a complete douche; you're completely right that he should just cold call. It really isn't that bad that some d-bag has to go out there without dignity. Or maybe he's just that big of a d-bag. Short dignity and long this guy serving burritos at Chipotle in brown-face in t-minus 2 weeks.

Posted by Anal_yst, Jun 24, 2008 10:57PM

@ 6:05

When living in NYC (or any other major city) and gainfully unemployed, one's "extracurricular" (drinking, etc) habbits (which one enjoys with one's newfound free time) tend to get very expensive, very quickly. With decent 12-packs @ corner bodegas/delis running $10-$15 in alot of places, it makes more sense to appropriate a car (yours, friends, whatever) and head to the beer distributor and pick up a keg for like $100.

Economic considerations aside, having a kegerator @ your place is seriously just like a manquirement (its a word, I swear).

Once you're employed once again, you'll appreciate it even more when you can stock it with the best beers in all the land, right there at your finger tips!

Combined with not shaving, showering, etc, this will complete your hobo-esque unemployment experiment.

Anal_yst or anyone else, have you tried the mini tap that heineken has on the market for their mini kegs? Seems like a much more practical solution that a full blown kegerator.

the downside is that it seems limited to heineken.

I admire this guy’s spirit but agree his methods may do more harm than good to his perceived reputation and value. I know how it feels as I lost everything over the last 1 ½ years. Was not fired, but left in order to try entrepreneurial idea. Funny how even the best plans can fall apart. Like some have mentioned, I was described by many as arrogant before my ordeal. Now I am humbled that no matter who or where we are you can fall. This man may not have a 1st class pedigree but we can show him some consideration. He is just a man trying to take care of his family. That alone deserves some respect.

It's seems easy to fire off pejoritive comments when you're far removed from any circumstance; having worked with Joshua, although not to the degree of a close personal relationship, it's almost impossible not to sympathize with his situation - regardless of the way he has decided to outwardly market his difficulties.

Mr. Persky, you should not be holding tight to your MIT diploma even nearly 30 years after your graduation. It's a past glory that really doesn't matter that much any more. From you work history, it seems you have not planed your career carefully and do not know what is the right thing for you. Hope you find a job soon.
