    Apple is going to make their money with a killer app developed from their release of the SDK. They will sell the killer app on ITunes, and keep 30% of the revenue – 70% goes to the developer that thinks up and develops this software for the IPhone. This is a significant and under-remarked about revenue stream for Apple. They put the incentives in the right people’s hands; software developers – the developers get the 70%. There will be tons of people developing something special for the Iphone that everyone will just have to have. The killer app (whatever it is) will sell the IPhone for Apple. And Apple will make boat loads of money on the other applications that are nice to have. This is open source at its best, but all sales of software have to go thru ITunes. It’s genius. People will snap up the applications by the millions – at $10 a piece. Apple gets $3 and didn’t do any investment other than look at the software and make sure it doesn’t have bugs/viruses. This is Apple’s secret weapon – and multi-million dollar revenue generator.

    @8:42, please watch who you’re calling a dimwit –
    “Like I said at the outset, it may be obvious, but it bears repeating: Apple intends to retain very tight control of all iPhone apps. There’s lots of complaining about the fact that all iPhone apps have to be approved by Apple, will be sold by Apple, and Apple will get a 30% cut of all sales. On the other hand, John Siracusa at Ars Technica says that “developers see dollar signs” in iPhone apps, so presumably they’ll deal with the restrictions.”
    Gee – if Apple gets 30% of all sales, how much does the developer get? Remedial math much 8:42?

  12. Posted by guest | June 20, 2008 at 9:51 AM

    okay so the developer gets what?

  13. Posted by guest | June 20, 2008 at 5:29 PM

    @9:51 70% okay? sigh…
    So let’s say a developer makes a cool game, sells it for $10 on I tunes. He gets $7.00. Think what some kind of Soduku would sell for… sell 300,000 of those…that’s a lot of dough for soduku…yah? (for people who are bad at math – 7 x 300,000 = $2,100,000 – i didn’t even use a calculator…sigh)
    Meanwhile Apple sells 1 million games (from lots of developers) and if they all go for $10 –$3,000,000…ok? And they’re sell a lot more than 1 mil applications…they’ve sold 5 billion songs already…
    The applications for the IPhones are not going to be just games….useful stuff too. All they need is one Killer app and the IPhone will become even more of a “must have” than it is now. And some developer will be very rich…pretty soon everybody will want to develop for the IPhone. It’s web 3.0
