You Have No Idea How Lucky You Are

Listen, it might seem that during times like these, it can't get any worse than being an expendable analyst, laid off or about to be laid off with at least few months severance and somewhere between half and a whole bonus but you people have no idea how bad it is for your boss's boss's boss. It is fucking bleak. Don't believe me? That's fine. For some perspective on how easy you've got it, let the Times give you a little glimpse into the dark, depressing hell of an existence you could be in right now. Next time you pass your M.D. in the lobby, perhaps as you're being escorted out the building, put yourself in his shoes and realize that:

The woman who married him for his money will soon be divorcing him because he no longer has any. (This is not to say she doesn't feel bad about the dissolution of their marriage. She probably feels really bad about it--she's not going to get anything* from the divorce.)

One of [divorce lawyer Nancy Chemtob's] clients recently confessed that his net worth had decreased to $8 million from more than $20 million, and he thinks that his wife will leave him. He has hidden their fall in fortune by taking on debt to pay for her extravagant clothes and vacations.

"I literally had to sit there and tell him that he had to tell his wife that she had to stop spending," she said. "He was actually scared she would leave him because their financial situation changed so drastically."

He will be reduced to flying on the rich person equivalent of U.S. Airways

"A year ago, he would have only flown Gulfstreams," Mr. Sullivan said. "Now it's moving to the point where he's flying Beech jets and Learjets."

He will become a FAT ASS

The very wealthy can't hide anything from their nutritionists and personal trainers, because they see the weight gain. Heather Bauer, a dietitian who works with many Wall Street executives who pay $600 to $800 a month for her services, says her clients have been eating and drinking more in the last six months. She sees results of this indulging each time they step on a scale, and in their journals that record what they've eaten.

Her clients blame the economy for their out-of-control waistlines.

"The number one concern that they have is the state of the financial market," she said. "There definitely is a correlation between the stock market and weight gain."

He will never get laid again.

Even their sex lives are suffering, Ms. Bauer said, because of the stress or because the weight gain makes them feel unattractive.

Thank God. I thought I was the only one.

Posted by blndebnker, Jun 02, 2008 2:34PM

My heart is bleeding for those poor bastards. I will pause for a moment of silence as I ride public transportation home tonight.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 2:36PM

I think I speak for almost all of us when I say, "BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Posted by HAM05, Jun 02, 2008 2:40PM

i think its time for a 'poor party' - preferably tonight

we will serve dogs (NOT hebrew national), utz brand potato chips, and absolut-spiked grape drink.

still need a rooftop venue as its gorgeous out

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 2:41PM

What we have here is a lack of ability to contextualize and adapt.

Looked at one way, going from a NW of $20M to a NW of $8M is a 60% drop in economic power. That bites, no question.

Looked at another way, that's enough to buy a modestly palatial house in some second-tier city like DFW or Chicago and spend the rest of your life working on your small collection of Italian sportscars, surfing the 'Net, and ordering up reasonably expensive call girls at least four times a month, especially if you're already in your fifties.

If that's poverty, sign me the Hell up.

Posted by blndebnker, Jun 02, 2008 2:46PM

Ham - Grape juice or grape soda? Either way I'm in just curious.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 2:48PM

241 - 8m after home and living expenses would buy a very small collection of Italian sportscars indeed. why even bother?

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 2:51PM

248 - A point. Let's really rub their faces in the misery and call it a small collection of *German* sportscars.

Posted by onetwo , Jun 02, 2008 2:52PM

blndbnker - anyone worth their salt knows "grape drink" is the ultimate beverage...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWPqHOeBdkk (thanks, Chris)

Posted by blndebnker, Jun 02, 2008 2:55PM

I'm sorry, ontwo. Clearly I'm behind the eight-ball. Sadly I cannot see youtube at work with the firewall and all.

Posted by blndebnker, Jun 02, 2008 2:58PM

Oh and totally forgot to post last week, though I did send gratitude emails...

Thanks to everyone at DB, especially Bess, for taking care of me and my boys with some Shorty's!!

Posted by HAM05, Jun 02, 2008 2:58PM

cmon blondie keep up, 1-2 nailed it

how bout it - we need a venue...

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 3:07PM

I wish I lived and traded in a second tier city like DFW. Don't get me wrong, when we roll to Bismarck to party, and we tell a gal she has "moves like a MF", she thinks you're talking about a Massey-Ferguson tractor but it all works out OK later.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 3:15PM

forget grape drink, i want purple stuff

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 3:16PM

might be funny if it wasn't so pathetically true.
all that "hard" work, back stabbin' and gold diggin' down the drain.

reminds me of the depressed ex-paper millionaires in 2001.
silly market messing with people's empty lives of excess!

Posted by blndebnker, Jun 02, 2008 3:29PM

I almost missed that jem about a $2mm settlement for a divorcee. Good work, Bess.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 3:32PM

2:41PM How is Chicago a second tier city you clueless assclown?.....Why because it doesn't have garbage all over the streets like NYC

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 3:40PM

a tad sensitive are we? you guys don't even have real strip joints...

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 3:44PM

I am so down for a rooftop poor party. God I need this.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 3:47PM

3:40 - I *live* in Chicago, and I called it a second-tier city because our call girls are a lot cheaper and so are our reasonably palatial homes. I personally wouldn't live in or near NYC on a bet - it's not my style. But from the point of view of these nigh-derelict refugees, this human economic flotsam, these seven-digit sojourners, it's definitely a step down to consider Chicago as a place to live out their poverty-stricken golden years.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 3:47PM

Let the great Chicago/New York debate begin!

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 3:47PM

Chicago, you are a second tier city, and face it, that's being generous.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 3:49PM

And also our strip joints do, in fact, suck. Sorry. The strip joints in IOWA are better. Freaking IOWA. I kid you not.

Posted by blndebnker, Jun 02, 2008 3:54PM

Did you guys decide on a rooftop yet?

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 3:56PM

This guy has no idea how much better life can be without the baggage (wife). I got divorced last year, used a high priced pit bull (aka an attorney) to let my (ex) wife know I would totally and completely destroy her and make her beg for a quick end to her pathetic life if she fought me at all. Initially she did and I began to follow through on my promise...she quickly realized my was the best way. We were officially divorced when I was vacationing in Austria. Now we get along better than we ever did and I'm dating a half dozen women. I didn't lose anything, all I had to do was buy her out of the equity in our home and give her a modest amount of money so she could set up a new place. Life is grand and unsavory attorneys are my friends.

Divorce is (usually) expensive but you get what you pay for, its worth it.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 3:57PM

We can have it on my rooftop. It's in Lincoln Park in Chicago.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 3:59PM

Forget the rooftop... if you really want to have a "poor party", you might as well just go to Jimmy's and swim in some $3 natty's/ pbr. At least you'll have the opportunity to take down some recently emmigrated '08 girlie.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 4:05PM

3:56 what was to prevent your wife from getting her own pit bull?
not all of us are blessed with an idiot wife we can just leave at will, unfortunately.

Posted by blndebnker, Jun 02, 2008 4:06PM

I don't think I want to go to that poor of a party. I haven't had natty since mug nights in college.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 4:09PM

chicago is a top tier city like vanderbilt is a top tier university

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 4:09PM

I like Chicago - reminds me of a less sophisticated Pittsburgh with better steak and fatter women.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 4:11PM

@4:09 here here

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 4:12PM

Well blnde... I will leave you to rio grande and tomorrow's 'rita overhang.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 4:13PM

@4:05

My ex wife is an attorney (insurance defense) but she knew I had the ability to be the most ruthless prick on the face of the earth. I have worked hard and spent a lot of money on legal fees over the years systematically taking apart the people who have gotten in my way. My wife knew this and didn't want to bear the wrath. Nothing prevented her from getting her own pitbull but she knew mine would be more ferocious and my resolve would be greater than hers ever could be. She decided it would be better to take a reasonable deal and get out than to try and fight an uphill battle. In the end it all came down to reputation...all of the money I've spent (personally and through my company) came back 10 fold. Remember, legal fees are an investment in your reputation.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 4:13PM

@4:09

So says the guy from Pittsburgh....

Anyone from Cleveland want to chime in on what they think of Chicago?

obviously you've never been to Scarlett's.

simply amazing

I needed a reference point - never even been to Pittsburgh....

But I've been to Chicago many times and I'm sticking to my story!

@4:12 - No thanks - no tequila for me. I'm all for cheap beer, just not Natty/ PBR. I was thinking more like Miller Lite.

@FUN - Veto Roosevelt Island. There must be some divey bar with an outdoor space in the city.

4:09PM, you molest collies

Posted by HAM05, Jun 02, 2008 4:36PM

sutton place on 53rd and 2nd has a decent rooftop if memory serves. typical midtown joint...

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 4:38PM

agreed, roosevelt island is about as poor party as you can get. totally bootleg but still filled with white people.

Posted by Random Banker, Jun 02, 2008 4:38PM

Chicago is a slightly more sophisticated New York (lest you forget, staten island), with better sports teams, lower rents, and more robust financial institutions. Anyway, isn't girl from Chicago, where is she on this?

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 4:39PM

HAM yeah sutton place is not exactly poor party though, it is mostly filled with bankers and traders and other midtown professionals

Posted by HAM05, Jun 02, 2008 4:41PM

yeah but i called em and they said theyd make purple drink

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 4:41PM

Random Banker you have obviously never seen the chicago suburbs I would put those hicks against staten island any day.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 4:45PM

that's dope.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 4:45PM

that's dope.

Posted by Random Banker, Jun 02, 2008 4:46PM

Nah, plus New York has NJ. Its not even close, plus the wisco cheese heads don't think they're sophisticated, unlike the population of murray hill.

Posted by FUNdamental, Jun 02, 2008 4:46PM

I was going to throw sutton out there but then felt bad about myself for it.

Posted by Random Banker, Jun 02, 2008 4:48PM

Luna Park, blnde banker, ham, anyone?

Posted by girl, Jun 02, 2008 4:54PM

Hah random banker, arguing with idiots isn't on my agenda for today. But my unchanged 2 cents, having lived in both:

Chicago has terrific restaurants, fun bars, tons of space, great houses/ beaches, and water you can actually swim in.

New york has more of a "scene", is a walking city which I prefer, and is more culturally diverse. That said, people here really think far too highly of themselves, even if they are on the whole more attractive than in the midwest. It's very off-putting.

Also, chicago suburbs being compared to SI? I assume none of you clowns have been to Lake Forest or Winnetka.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 4:59PM

4:36 (aka size 22 from Illinois) -

Sorry if that hit too close to home - unless it's the steak part that upset you. 4:09

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 5:00PM

4:22 - I've been to every strip joint in Chicago, searching in vain for a decent one. Scarlett's is the best of a bad lot. Like I said, even the ones in Iowa are better, and that's not a high bar to jump even in 5" heels.

That being said, I've never been to one in NYC. For all I know, theirs are worse. All I know is ours suck and the podunks in Davenport and Atlanta have better ones, for crying out loud.

Posted by Random Banker, Jun 02, 2008 5:06PM

girl, obviously, all the suburb aren't winnetka, I think they were referring more to the hill-jacks in Aurora or up around gurnee. Speaking of chicago not bening a walking town, how do people get from one part of the city to another? i always, drive... when i'm there... i guess people take the El or what?

Posted by blndebnker, Jun 02, 2008 5:09PM

@RB - Could be convinced to try Luna Park. Anyone else in?

Posted by Random Banker, Jun 02, 2008 5:10PM

P.S. girl, i've seen no evidence that women in new york are actually more attractive but rather simply think that they are.

Posted by big r, Jun 02, 2008 5:14PM

luna closed down after last summer

Posted by girl, Jun 02, 2008 5:15PM

El, taxi, bus- also there is valet everywhere which is pretty nice.

Re: the girls, no, they actually are better looking here. Even the hot ones in chicago have something rough going on, like poorly applied eye shadow or a pair of Uggs.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 5:15PM

Luna Park in Union Sq.? I thought it was shutdown...aren't they building something over there?

~LexSteelz

Posted by Investorcluzo, Jun 02, 2008 5:16PM

@random - where have you been? luna park is under construction, lots of tractor and $hit on the north end of the park. 230 fifth is way too upscale for a poor party. anyone know of rooftops in alphabet city?

re: nyc/chicago debate - please do not include S.I. in the discussion. let's agree that it should be manhatton/chicago. then again, that's not a real debate, so it should be chicago/pittsburg for the best 2nd tier city.

@1-2: great video, fk sunny d! I want the grape $hit...

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 5:16PM

@3:49 - Take a trip out to the Industrial Strip in Hammond, Indiana sometime. It's glorious.

However, coming from St. Louis it is a big let down to have to drive 30 minutes outside of Chicago to see some decent mammory glands.

Posted by Headless Horseman, Jun 02, 2008 5:18PM

Jumping into the fray:

NY is okay in fits and spurts as there's certainly enough to keep one busy for a week or two. Much longer than that and the pervasive douche baggery of select residents (about 25% of Manhattan's population) starts to overwhelm what presumably must pass for my small, underdeveloped, Midwestern mind. I used to carry mace for the criminals but after a week I always found myself emptying it out on some hapless tool that in finding out I'm from Cleveland declares "So you're here to get a little culture" as though some osmosis-like process is occurring that’s making me more well-rounded by virtue of my proximity to him. If my alcohol-and-asswipe-induced pepper sprayings are to blame for the current trend whereby men have taken to wearing women’s sunglasses at NY’s hip nightspots despite it being, you know...night, then I apologize profusely. It’s a testament to the self-restraint of Manhattanites that the other 75% of you tolerate it so well.

For the record Cleveland is home to a world-renowned orchestra. In fact, you might be surprised to learn that we have the second largest performing arts district outside of NY. We’ve got large populations of Italians, Germans, [insert today’s politically-correct nomenclature for black people here], and yes Jews. We can open more than two cabinets in our kitchens at the same time and don’t have to partition an 8’x 10’ room off into four quadrants for varying uses. We’ve got a zoo (granted ODB never wrote a song about it), two amusement parks, multiple art museums, the nation’s largest metropark, and three professional sports teams. Remember what we did to the Yankees last year? We’ve got a higher density of universities than anywhere outside of Boston. All of which you’d know if you didn’t flyover the “second-rate” cities. And when I meet you at one of our nightspots, I’d be more inclined to buy you a beer, set you up with a girl, and give you a few suggestions on other places to check out while you’re in town than to I would be to read you my resume, tell you about my newest yacht (yeah, we’ve got em’ too we just don’t carry the pictures around), and ask you if you’re “here to get away from the rats and get enjoy some fresh air.”

I love visiting the NY and I’m not arguing that Cleveland’s superior to “the city.” I’m just saying that every excursion outside of Manhattan needn’t be viewed as yet another validation of its irrefutable glory.

Posted by ab, Jun 02, 2008 5:19PM

@RB

people definitely take the El - and a lot more take the buses too. but girl is right in general - CTA is all right but it just doesn't compare to the subway system here.

that said, there is a pink line.

Posted by Investorcluzo, Jun 02, 2008 5:26PM

@headless: no need to be politcally correct here, go with your gut - you will get corrected by the peanut gallery if you are way off.

I recently visited cleveland (shaker heights area). seemed like there were more "for sale" signs and ohio state fans than anything else. I'll have to check out this orchestra that you speak so highly of if I ever make it back.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 5:27PM

Scarletts closed after last summer as well.

@Rando:
If you live in the city, Chicago is very walkable. Depends how far you're walking, you wouldn't walk from say the south loop (CBOE/CME area) to say Wrigleyville because it's about 8 miles away. You can take the El around town if you want, but most people just cab it. It's pretty much just like NY in that regard.

Posted by Random Banker, Jun 02, 2008 5:28PM

uh, IC, my bad dude. I haven't been there since I was an intern, I was just trying to match the poor party theme. As for staten, its clearly part of the city of New York as is the bronx and queens, You can't cherry pick what is and is not part of their city. Well sure if you take the nicest part of new york and compare it to all of Chicago then its is going to seem better.

Posted by Investorcluzo, Jun 02, 2008 5:39PM

@random - but staten tried to secede from new york, so do they really have to count? throw me a bone here...

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=950DE6DA133CF932A35754C0A96F948260

I'm willing to take the bronx (they got the yankees) and queens (gateway to the hamps).

Posted by Headless Horseman, Jun 02, 2008 5:42PM

Re: Investorcluzo

It would be an evening well-spent.

I also forgot to mention that Cleveland and it's suburbs' are home to 22 Fortune 500 companies. Notwithstanding the weak dollar, manufacturing is still having a tough go at it (commodity prices, foreign competition, weak consumer confidence etc.) hence the preponderance of "for sale" signs.

As for the excessive of Ohio State bravado, I'm without explanation.

Posted by FUNdamental, Jun 02, 2008 5:42PM

@ic - does that mean we(as a country) can discount the crappy parts of the south as well?

Posted by Investorcluzo, Jun 02, 2008 5:49PM

@fun: you don't already? miss, la, ark - they are net takers, would happily sell them to the highest bidder (discuss). seriously, you can not get to manhattan directly from staten island (have to go through nj or long island) all of the other boroughs have direct access. just a coincidence? I think not...

Posted by FUNdamental, Jun 02, 2008 5:54PM

@ic - I think it's incredibly unfair to throw la, ark and miss out there.

Without including 'bama, kentucky(west virginia excluded due to their position in the war of secession....that we probably should have let the south win...but moving on). Vast portions of georgia, missouri and the carolina's (but noting their contributions of bbq and the coast).

Posted by Investorcluzo, Jun 02, 2008 6:00PM

@fun - totally forgot about wva, perhaps that wasn't an accident. georgia, bama and the carolinas have good golf (and not much else). kentucky, has a good horse race - but I've never been. you may have a point about the show me state.

we digress, what happened to the poor party on the rooftop? blndbnker, anal_yst wtf?

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 6:21PM

@IC: Don't forget about the South's large quantity of hot girls.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 6:50PM

6:21 is right. As someone who has lived in the south and currently live in New York, I can say that the South, per capita, has a hell of a lot more attractive women. New York will have a few 10s that blow the Southern girls out of the water, but, as a whole, the number of 8s and 9s in the South is simply astounding. Oh, and they're way more f*ing fun than the boring women you meet up in New York. Date a Southern girl and you'll agree.

Posted by Investorcluzo, Jun 02, 2008 7:05PM

@6:21/6:50 - I'm from tx, you are preaching to the choir here! having lived and gone to school in the NE, it's easy to see why women in the warmer climes do better: you can't hide behind a sweater for 6 months year down south like you can up here...getting "cute" for the summer season is just not gonna cut it.

Posted by guest, Jun 02, 2008 7:12PM

6:50 here. Yeah, and I think there's something about being able to go to the beach/lake 6-9 months out of the year that just makes women happier (and probably better looking).

And I love texans . . .

Did anyone ever settle on a rooftop? When is that planned for anyways?

Posted by big r, Jun 02, 2008 8:01PM

the rooftop is for the 'poor party' which derived from this post. last i checked the only bars that were agreed upon were ones shut down since last summer. typical DB effort here folks.

@ big r - typical.

oh my god you guys, there's so many bars here in the east village that have outside patios/gardens (no rooftops) try googling...or vindago. sigh... too late now, I would have told you had I checked in earlier...sorry....next time. And for a poor party there's always Doc Holidays..

Posted by guest, Jun 03, 2008 8:26AM

@7:05

Funny. I've lived to see the day that a guy from Texas is able to call Chicago a second tier city.

I'd love to see your list of the top tier. Please humor me.

Posted by guest, Jun 03, 2008 8:50AM

Yeah well daytona beach has tons of slammin girls as well, this does not make it a top tier city.

New York, London, LA, Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong, Sydney for example ... these are cities that have panache, they have international appeal. Chicago may be a perfectly nice place to live if you have to live in a city for all I know, but there is a huge glamour gap there. Same like Boston, Seattle, etc etc. Good cities, sure. But they are not capturing anyone's imagination.

Posted by guest, Jun 03, 2008 9:02AM

@8.50am

Is that you Carrie Bradshaw?

Posted by guest, Jun 03, 2008 10:09AM

What's wrong with Uggs? That's like standard issue on the Magnificent Mile.

How else am I supposed to get around North Michigan in the snow

Posted by Investorcluzo, Jun 03, 2008 7:51PM

@8:26 - thanks for playing, but if you had been keeping up you would know that I live in nyc (and have for some time). I am a believer in the city, but I haven't forgotten my roots...
