Erin Burnett: A Real Piece Of Work

Erin Burnett Is A Star.jpgIt seems that our obsession with Erin Burnett may not be accidental. According to her big New York Times profile, by none other than the highly influential Brian Stelter, Burnett’s rise to celebrity was carefully engineered by CNBC.
Erin nicely handles the question that is asked of any successful, beautiful woman: what role did her looks play in her success? This is especially relevant at CNBC, where many of their viewers are known to watch with the volume turned all the way down until important news breaks. “There is an element of TV that is visual. You can’t deny that,” she tells Stelter. “But you’re not going to be able to move to the next level without the passion, the contacts, the journalistic drive.”
And man does she have drive. Erin (notice how well programmed we are by CNBC that we feel comfortable calling her by her first name) started out at Goldman Sachs but immediately began gunning for television business news stardom. She wrote to Willow Bay, the co-anchor CNN’s “Moneyline” and landed herself the job of Bay’s assistant and then as a writer at the network. Later, she somehow turned a job writing a business plan for an internet media start-up at Citigroup into an on air job. (It seemed she pulled a Dick Cheney and chose herself for the role.) This caught Bloomberg TV’s attention, which got her noticed by CNBC.
One thing that the article doesn’t explore is Erin’s fascination with China, which she continued this morning on Squawk On The Street by announcing that she’s far more interested in seeing Mongol than Dark Knight. (By the way, this might be the official contrarian line of the week. Two hedge fund managers said exactly the same thing to us this weekend.)

    it’s me.
I used to think Erin was *hot* until that crap about wanting to meet a rich guy or whatever blasted the illusion that she didn’t have a price.
what a waste of good looks and talent.

  2. Posted by guest | July 21, 2008 at 1:59 PM

Saw Mongol this weekend. Didn’t see Batman.
    I’m happy with my choice.

  3. Posted by guest | July 21, 2008 at 2:00 PM

@ myself: well, I can’t verify the “talent” part.

  4. Posted by guest | July 21, 2008 at 2:04 PM

Of course she has a price…. look at how she slobbers over “money” in her quotes, not to mention the self-indicting piece in Men’s Health. Melissa Francis or Margaret Brennan should take her place.

my all time fave, the women for whom my heart beats, is Liz Claman (didn’t she spell it with a “K” when she was at CNBC?)
Liz, you should get to know me. Remember that time I bumped into you on the NYMEX? I really worked on the NYBOT, but I went all the way downstairs when I found you were going to be there…you can’t buy that kind of devotion.

    @ 1:58
I have a question for you why is it offensive when a woman says the want to meet a rich man (what is she suppossed to say “i am hoping to meet a poor guy, with bad breath and i hope to fly cattle class “?). But when a man says i want to meet a hot blonde it is an aspirational statement(what is he supoossed to say “i hope to meet an ugly blond with a huge ass and i hope we get matching cankles”?).
If you have learned nothing on this site you should have learned everyone has a price – EVERYONE. Why are billionaire’s in their 50 – 80′s on their 3rd/4th hot, much younger wives.

  12. Posted by guest | July 21, 2008 at 2:23 PM

I read the piece when it appeared in the NY Times. I didn’t realize that Erin Burnett (a) had gone to Williams; (b) had previously worked at Goldman Sachs; or (c) was 31. I had assumed that (a) she had gone to NYU, along with Mary Kate and Ashley; (b) that she had previously worked at the perfume counter at Macy’s; and (c) that was she was 24 or 25.
I am one of the few who don’t get her “striking good looks.” To me, she looks like a very alert cartoon puppy. There’s something about that nose …
To her legions of fans, I honor your devotion. Although she seems a little on the airheaded side, I wish her the best.

An old story, best told in “All About Eve”. In this remake, Erin is Eve Harringon to Maria’s Margo Channing.

  18. Posted by guest | July 21, 2008 at 2:35 PM

What do you think Erin got for her contract? 250k per year?
It is odd that Men’s Health 8 ways to Impress me list wasn’t in the NY Times Story. Or when Erin was on Conan and he didn’t bring up the article.
I wonder how much $$ CNBC offered Men’s Health to take that article off their website. You can still access it.
Funny part is that there was a little controversy over Lorrie Lynch who writes a toilet-paper worthy column about celebrities and tried to do a phone conversation with Erin but CNBC said not without one of her handlers.

NBC is making a huge mistake if they are preparing Erin for TODAY.
Maria Menounos is a much better choice: cuter, younger and much more adept with handling people — see her Obama & kids interview a few weeks ago.
Give goldigger Burnett the boot. Maria deserves the glass slipper.

Agree with some of the comments her. She is not good looking. She has a very pointy/weasley type nose and very small breasts. They do a great job of painting her face every day, but she’s quite plain.
And also, she is the Machurian Biz Reporter, planted here long ago by China to infiltrate the news system. Her incessant pumping of China, India, UAE is nauseating.

Yes maria is sooo much better. Perhaps it is the fact that she is dating Van Diseal, appears in Jessica Simpsoms latest music video or is soon to star with Jamie Kennedy in “Kickin’it Old Skool”. Her future an Today will be capped with a seat on the 4th hour next to Kathy Lee and Hoda Kotb (sort of like Elizabeth Hasselback on the view – the hot, but very annoying, young one)

#43 Rankings are subjective, based on what criteria is chosen to be included and how to weight those criteria. As an example, here’s another respected ranking source: http://www.arwu.org/rank/2007/ARWU2007_Top100.htm
BTW, although size does matter (doesn’t it always?), the most common way to distinguish a college from a university: a university offers advanced degrees.

although she was tagged by NY Post as China Lover in the past,Chinese I interviewed don’t believe it.it’s just that GE wants China for its business. GE has a lot of competitors in China e.g Seimens, ABB to name the few.
I still recall her comments about Morgan Stanley+China and recently her silver lining that she would rather have Belgium not the other country take over the last US beer icon BUDweiser. She is happy that it’s own now by INBEV and thinks BUD is in good hands.
She can be prejudice at times and make some uncanny and unethical remarks unworthy of what supposed to be a respectable and credible financial reporter.

Ms Burnett has had a meteoric ride since graduating from Goldman analyst to CNN writer to Vice President at Citigroup to MSNBC in a short few years. I’ve noticed her corporate and trader “bent” in her analysis and suspect she is corporate media “eye candy” above all. One must give her credit that she has done well with a BS in Econ in a short time.

No. 96: I wrote the post yesterday (no. 12) about Erin Burnett looking like a “very alert cartoon puppy.” Thanks for agreeing! I’m never quite certain whether I’m alone in the universe or not.
I also wanted to clarify that I have nothing against NYU, or Williams, either, for that matter. They’re both fine schools. Erin Burnett just struck me as more likely to be a NYU coed, sharp and worldly.
As to Mary Kate and Ashley, hey, I didn’t mean to step on any feet at DB. Those girls may be worth billions, but can you deny that they are spooky? Do they ever smile, except in a sad, macabre way? They look like the kitschy portraits of sad, lost children with oversized heads that used to be sold everywhere.

  101. Posted by guest | July 22, 2008 at 2:45 PM

Supergrit… I admire the fellatio technique/posting…. hope you have a CNBC towel to clean yourself with. I didn’t know that self-selecting out of an analyst program after one year was now termed “graduating”.

  102. Posted by guest | July 22, 2008 at 4:06 PM

I sometimes watch CNBC while I’m eating lunch. I’ve never been impressed with Erin Burnett because something always seems to be ‘missing’ in her performances. I can’t really say what that is; I haven’t studied her because (again) I’m not impressed or interested.
From a quick scan of the posts on this thread, I gather that negative comments about Erin run ahead of the positives by about 3.5 to 1. I believe that you goons are pretty savy and that you are certainly part of CNBC’s targeted audience.
So we have something in common here:
DB Posters = Informed…TGFD = Uninformed >>> DB + TGFD = Negative on Erin. This is significant.
My analysis does not bode well for Erin’s career. Therefore, I predict the following: In spite of CNBC’s current enthusiasm for Erin, CNBC will get rid of her within 11 months. They will shitcan her ass off the air.
That’s my take on Erin Burnett.
    The Guy from Delaware

Erin is hot from straight on, but in profile, not so much. That schnoz needs work, as does the rack. I would nevertheless give her a shot at the title, but only after I had worn out Alexis.

As the Times says, “CNBC needed a Star and Built one.” They did need a cool and clean Star and now TV for 2008 lists her on the HOT list. Last year it was Alexix Glick who heads up FOX Business with a host of “hotties”. Way to go….ERIN.
