Give It To Him Straight

University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business which, annoyingly, doesn't have a name, held a conference call "chat" with prospective students this morning. One guy asked "How would you consider my application given I have a 2.0 undergrad? Do I have a shot?" The limp-wristed answer from the admissions office was, "Well, that's hard to say...maybe you're strong in other areas...I'm hesitant to say because of unknown variables," blah blah blah. Kind, but not helpful to 2.0 Boy. Since you people fancy yourselves as experts on all things b-school, what do you think? Does Jimmy Cayne have a better shot of being named the new chairman of the Federal Reserve? Or, for those who regard anything but HBS or Wharton on par with University of Phoenix's Business School, does a 2.0 = this thing is in the bag?

It's so funny to watch those chats- I'll be a 1st yr. MBA student this fall (see my vanishing act from the mortgage market) and I can't tell you how many people would ask me things like that after I researched all the schools in which I was interested. The most interesting thing, though, was meeting with 2nd year students and recent alums from some of the top MBA programs (GSB, HBS, etc) and finding out how they couldn't put it together. Yah, you might have some more technical knowledge than me, but if you can't see how finance, accounting and marketing work together for product development (for example) then have fun being a middle manager for the rest of your life. Strangely enough, it was the kids who got 2.0-3.5 or so who seem better able to fit it all together.

As a current GSB'r I know it is possible but with a 2.0 highly unlikely. The rest of the package must be terrific. Regardless, this guy should line up a bunch of safety schools....

12

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 1:02PM

If he works for a non-profit, then he is guaranteed admission. They need to fill out the industry diversity quotas and since most non-profit people are lazy slackers the 2.0 is fairly competitive among this demographic.

"I'm hesitant to say because of unknown variables," like how much money you and yours will donate.
..........

Having experience some of the Donation Kids at Brown, I can tell you they will accept a person with a 2.0 IQ, let alone a 2.0 GPA.

14

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 1:10PM

If he has a strong GMAT (say 770-800) then he can just make up a strong story on his essay.

15

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 1:10PM

Sure he can get in. In fact, GSB is one of the few quality b-schools he could get in with a 2.0 (and a +600 GMAT). Apply to the part-time GSB program in a slow admission period (December for Winter Quarter) and request a transfer to the full time after about a year. In September 2010, you will join the other full-timers (assuming you pulled A's in the previous classes) as a Full Time second year.

@1:10 GSB doesn't allow people to move between part time and full time programs anymore. They put a stop to it about 3-4 years ago.

24

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 1:25PM

Are the options coming out of a Bschool like Duke that drastically different than HBS/Wharton, etc.?

Obviously, only the top of the top will recruit from HBS/Wharton -- but for schools just below that (i.e. Duke) -- I imagine the exit opportunities are still very very lucrative, correct?

duke is not a top-tier b-school, IMO. The value of a b-school degree drops considerably once you get out of the top 10, if not 5 schools. Sometimes I wonder if even the top 5 are worth the all-in cost.

Being on the admission committee of one of the schools Bess mentioned, I have to admit that this guy still has a chance, but with a huge BUT

I.e. - he has to at least present improvement since his undergrad. GMAT > 750 would definitely help as well as somewhat impressive career track. He has to explain what went wrong with his BA studies, and how he managed to fix his life. And that could be one hell of a story

@dt - seriously? you have just listed a bunch of schools that will produce CFO's at best (let's hope they don't cook the books). I would agree the named schools turn out some very intelligent people, but america needs leaders - not a bunch of quant jocks. that's why we're in this mortgage mess now! hbs has the largest class of students. so yes, you will get a few rotten (and spoiled - read legacy) apples.

bottom line: everyone one loves to hate the best (dallas cowboys, yakees, etc), but that's because they're just jealous. I'm willing to admit that each school has their own expertise at which they excel, but pound for pound, hbs dominates in the global arena. let's be honest, this thread wouldn't have even started if the school in question was hbs.

2:59, last I checked asians were minorities, as were indians (dot nor feather) as well as jews. They are actually the ones discriminated against even more than whites.

Nopes, this isn't really a minority issue. Or maybe you will now argue that 'some minorities are more equal that others'?

Oh, and spare the tears for your failed brethren - even with the full force of affirmative action with them (and against me) I still managed to get into an excellent school with no connections and am doing pretty good for my peer group, thank you very much.

Maybe a 2.0 in a science or engineering undergrad degree from one of the top schools.

Hell, if he got a degree in industrial engineering, he's already mastered the MBA course material, except for maybe the writing, er, bull-shitting skills.

88

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 4:10PM

I usually do not comment but....

First off @ 3.22pm

I love how "conservatives" go on about how affirmative action is against them... You benefit from a society that has systematically disenfranchised minorities for centuries - first w/ slavery, then w/ jim crow laws. Ironically, the biggest beneficiaries of AA are not black ppl but white women - I don't hear you railing much about them ... only those evil brown/black people who intimidate you so much.

Normally I would give you a few examples to set you straight but I won't waste my time. Good luck in school; I can already see you for the future corporate weasel you will become.

Finally in response to Bess - a 2.0 GPA might scrape by if the rest of the application is bullet proof; but in a highly competitive year like this, the bar has been raised - unless he has done something in the meantime to showcase his academic process - CFA candidacy ~ classes at NYU or Columbia - homeboy is toast. In addition, you really do have to question his judgement - by asking the question he has been (mentally) flagged by admissions officers as a weak candidate, when he could have gotten a $200 - $300 consultation with an admissions consultant who could have given him the real low down.

646Hedgie - who also happens to be black as hell.

Having done quite a bit of hiring for my firm, I have to say the following:

1. HBS is VERY over-rated in all categories other than getting an associate who will be able to bring capital into the firm later because of big-name parents. To a woman, every HBS student we hired was a recruiting error.

2. Chicago is by FAR the better school to recruit for PE (LBOs in my case) from. The trick it to thin out the socially inept. Everyone I've ever met from Chicago can just "get the work done," without even breaking a sweat. Getting a Chicago grad that you can put in the same building with an LP or target management is a different story. They are out there, but you have to look harder. (I prefer this problem to the HBS issue- they've all been bullshitting since age 4 so you can't really tell if they have no fucking clue what they are doing).

3. This next admissions round is going to be brutal. I applied to a number of schools during HBS and Chicago's most competitive years to date (judging by their percentage accepted- big floods of market refugees after 9/11) and it was a bloodbath. People I knew who should have been able to write their ticket (not just 4.0ers) were sent packing immediately. I was expecting nothing and surprised to get accepted all over the place. I suspect it will be worse this next round. A 2.0 is a VANISHINGLY small prospect in this environment. And by that I don't mean a 1% prospect either. Chicago has figured out that they are a top 3 school, they have begun to look for well-rounded candidates and though that means that GPA and GMAT play less of a role, their applicant base is going to be so large this time around, well, 2.0 is probably not happening.

95

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 4:42PM

4:10, I also see that you are a trinity 'church' types - the typicaly perennial victim till the end of time.

First, to dismantle your argument piece by piece - latinos were not 'disenfranchised' any more than the asians or indians, whose country was rules by white people for 300 years. Incidentally most anti affirmative action lawsuits are these days filed by asians, not whites. So once again, please explain why hispanics should get such tremendous preferential treatment when the extent of 'disenfranchisement' that they faced was not different from that faced by other 'minorities'.

And as far as the 'black issue' goes, I used to live in DC which is 80% black. Almost EVERYTHING there is black run. If anything, there are multiple cities in this country which are totally black controlled and run.

All these cities run on budgets and have infrastructure which is better than most of what exists in cities in india and china. Yet, these 'black-run' cities are case studies in devastation - be it drugs, gangs, criminals, whatever whereas those poor indian and chinese towns keep growing at a fanatic pace.

So yes, your spiel would have held water 40 years back - now it doesnt. Black has assumed the mantle of failure and subsistence based on handouts - while blaming any and every failure on 'historical exploitation'.

The whole of asia (not just east and south but central too) was just as exploited by the west. Yet, today it stands to challenge the very western nations that exploited it - instead of blaming others for its failure and begging for money. Unfortunately, the black here have decided to be permanent victims - and even the successful ones believe that they are victims.

To quote another person from above " Cite whaetevr you want, but you're still a bunch of whiny-ass losers who needs to blame "others" for your own manifest failure to get ahead in life."

They're looking for under represented minorities. They don't need sob stories, just need to present a diverse class. If it was all about high GMATs with no regard to race, the classes would be filled with Asians that cheated on their entrance exams.

Besides, when I looked at the least deserving classmates they were all white males whose daddy was the CEO of some large company in the area.

I was 3rd round in almost all schools post 9/11/01. Brutal brutal year. I think Wharton went from several hundred possible slots for 3rd and waitlist to 50. Everyone with anything wrong at all, got dumped no matter how stellar the rest of the package was. The story was the same everywhere else. The only programs I got into were the ones where I barely squeaked in 2nd round.

sheepskin? you mean like a condom?

107

@5:02 No you retard. It gets lonely in the fields of the MidWest. So it's either the sheep or your sister.

Mr 2.0 needs to go to Kaplan, get a rockstar GMAT score, use his essays to explain away his crap undergrad gpa and what he's done since then to compensate, make a burnt offering and hope for the best.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... IMHO, the most important thing you walk away from after 2 years of how-to school the depth and breadth of the NETWORK. The stronger the network, the stronger your options are 2,3,5 years out.

@4:43 too true, too true... same deal with my undergrad days at one of the Ancient 8 - the best admissions stats (may have changed since the days of wax tablets and dinosaurs) were for legacies - 30%. And if papa made a bunch of $$$ donations... went up from there.

I work at a large PE (and I don't care to mention the name) but every person we've hired from HBS was horrible and shown the door within 2 years. Ironically, our best guys got their MBA's from a 10-25 ranked program (or didn't get one at all).

111

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 5:17PM

@5:16 WalMart is not PE.

@4:22 - atlanta is overrun by gangs and drugs??? damn, you are misguided.

we all know that whitey throws around the AA card whenever his penis envy becomes to much of a burden to bear or his woman leaves him for a black man...

113

Posted by BlackSwan06, Jul 16, 2008 5:20PM

@5:16 - probably because the #10-25 MBA kids or no-MBA kids a) worked hard to be there, b) continued to work hard to stay there, c) didn't feel "entitled" to the job, and and d) didn't coast in on a "well, I went to HBS" attitude as if waving their magic diplomas around would get the work done.

Amazing what two years in Cambridge can do to a person...

114

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 5:22PM

@5:16 blackcrow - FYI, HBS is not in cambridge, it's in boston (or alston to be specific)...and the only thing magic about the diploma is how fast it gets the panties to come off ( ;

115

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 5:22PM

4:48, given that you have yourself accepted that you are an inferior person - I can understand your tragic situation. When out of arguments, all you can do it yell - racist racist.

That is unfortunately what your single 18 year old mother taught since the day you were born in the ghetto, and that is something she uses to survive on welfare till date.

Had you known your father, let alone spent any time with him, you might have turned out a little different. But dont let that hatred / disgust / feeling of abandonment by your father get you down - keep trying the shortlist of the 25 men you think might be your father. Who knows, one fine day you may just get to know what a fine crack dealer he was until the other gang shot and crippled him and then the aids got to him.

116

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 5:24PM

They wear panties? After I claim to be from HBS no date has ever worn panties (unless I instruct her in advance to do so).

117

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 5:27PM

@5:24 - I'm not talking about the same woman you bedded the night before, clearly you missed the point...perhaps they saw through your ruse - Haverford Business School is not the same thing as HBS.

118

Posted by BlackSwan06, Jul 16, 2008 5:29PM

@5:22 I knew it... I KNEW IT...

Yes yes, I know that "technically" since HBS is across the river it is in ALLSTON, not Cambridge, but generally since Harvard is most closely associated with Cambridge, Mass I took the chance of using Cambridge in slightly more metaphorical sense...

mea culpa. mea maxima culpa.

hi 5:45,

i sit home and trade my personal wealth because even though i got burnt out from working on wall street(god, i hate that fucking term and am going to promptly punch myself in the face for using it), i sometimes miss the action.

financials are where the action is right now so i found this blog and it's been helpful in evaluating how good or bad things are, from the horses mouth so to speak. or ass.

i'm sorry if you were personally offended by my prior remark. now go back to working on a spreadsheet or something and i'll go back to deciding whether i want to buy LEH bonds.

have a great evening!

As someone who reads applications for a top 5 school and as someone who is just finishing his first year, all I can say is that just because you have a 2.0 doesn't mean you can't get in. You better be darn f'ing good at something else though. What if you an Olympic medallist, or someone with a navy star, or something out of the world spectacular to overshadow you complete lack of judging priorities (I can say this because I had two really hard UG majors, worked fulltime and went to school fulltime, but still ended up getting good grades. UG grades are not that hard to achieve).

If you have a 2.0, less than 600, are one of the majority candidates, and have no spectacular achievements, then why the heck should one look at you...?

5:53 said "i'm sorry if you were personally offended by my prior remark."

You hardly offended me and if anything, you should be offended at yourself for the stupid statement that you made. Suffolk officers start at a base of 57 and then get to 97 in 5 years. Add overtime and you may get to about 120 in 5 years time. Not to forget, you are out there on the street attending to calls, handing out tickets and carrying the risk of getting shot by a gangbanger. Oh, and how can you forget the colleagues - ranging from barely high-school grads to community college slobs.

Somehow you recommend that people here aspire for that, or somehow consider that in awe? And btw what are the exit options if lets say your dont like the job. Security guard?

Snark should be a minimally used tool cause more oftern than not, it is not snark by stupidity that comes out.

hi 6:40,

wow i really hit a nerve and not on purpose. if you add in the value of their total comp (pension benefits, etc.),
my number is pretty close. but that's not really the point.

this is:

"Oh, and how can you forget the colleagues - ranging from barely high-school grads to community college slobs."

did you really just type that, you cretin?

thank you for supporting my claim that you're really full of yourself. and i promise you it's for no good reason. at least your mommy thinks you're special.

now make make sure to work real hard on a snark-y reply while i try to figure out how many LEH bonds i should buy tomorrow. i promise you it'll be more than you'll make the next 5 years.

have a great night, you snotty little weirdo.

132

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 7:19PM

Based on the 6-7 encounters that I have had with the 'finest' of NYPD, related to traffic and parking tickets and 1 minor acccident - I FULLY stand by my community college slob statement.

Oh, and I bet the head of Suffolk PD pocketed a neat 300k with all benefits - including a white crown vic (wow!). Or was it a malibu? When I compare that with what my md makes, it makes me wanna weep.

So indeed, it was a brilliant comparison that you chose. I hope you apply similar analytical skills to the fake LEH bonds that you intend to buy with your monopoly money tomorrow.

Coz after all, I am sure that a gem of an investor with more than 5 years of my future income to splurge on a single trade would suddently realize and actually state "financials are where the action is right" (!!)

then that great investor would start off his multi million dollar investment research by googling and getting onto a gossip site, where he would chose to waste a better part of the afternoon trifling with people who are here to spend some downtime in between work, all the same glossing about pay at suffolk PD.

oh I am sorry, i wont take up more of your time. I am guessing that are taking steve (schwarzzman of course) for a spin on your new bentley continental after the dinner apoointment you have with him to discuss LEH bonds?

133

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 7:35PM

hi 7:19,

my original comment was that suffolk county police officers make 150k a year and don't pay student loans. i didn't insult your chosen career, which i presume is "analyst". i suppose we could argue whether they deserve to earn more or less, but that wasn't the point.

talk about a serious reaction formation on your part. lol

you use a declarative statement as an opportunity to bash police officers. why so defensive?

i'll admit you're probably a whole lot smarter than me. does that make you feel good? my mba is less valuable than yours. does that make you feel even better? i was the head otc trader of a boutique firm which was purchased by a big IB in 2000. i already admitted i was burnt out and took my money and ran. retired at 41. does that make you feel better about yourself?

is wish you luck with your wall street career. you'll need it with your hubris.

i'm sorry it offends you that i manage my own money.

i really do need to get ready for dinner, so have a great evening.
and what's with your obsession with cars?

134

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 7:37PM

just for clarity, i'm 41 now, not when i "retired".

135

Posted by guest, Jul 16, 2008 8:09PM

" i didn't insult your chosen career, which i presume is "analyst"."

"Analyst" is not a career. This could take a long time to explain so lets leave it there. Oh, and not an analyst either.

"you use a declarative statement as an opportunity to bash police officers"

Actually your statement (with the implied meaning explicitly stated) was - "You Harvard trained bankers should not be so full of yourselves because police officers at Suffolk average 150k and have no student loans."

Apparently you STILL do not see how absurd that statement was. Makes me wonder if you even know how much people are making. Or what being a suffolk pd officer involves. Or who chose to typically be suffolk pd officers.

On an anonymous internet forum, it does not matter if you are a 41-yr old retired head otc trader or a 17-yr old stripper. If you make absurd statements, then be prepared to defend them.

"i'm sorry it offends you that i manage my own money. "

Actually, it is the reverse. It looks like you consider it to be some great feat that you have quit and are managing your own money and are craving for acknowledgment of the same from people.

And anyways, being a little full of it is necessary - otherwise everyone would go to community college and then become a police officer at suffolk PD.

Don't let these clowns discourage you. You came to DB looking for info and advice on fixed income, and what did you get? Yo got dumped on by these goons. I don't think they know enough to advise you anyway.

Mix it up with them. That's what they like.

I told them today that the SEC was going to "gape" the asses of the shorts. They got all spun up and attacked the hell out of me with all their techno-jargon. Hahaha. They'll still end up with gaped asses.

I also insulted their exalted positions and their lofty opinions of themselves by calling them "rank-and-file Wall St goons". Hahah. They really roared again because, after all, they "deserve" a $110k bonus just for showing up and not getting fired for a few years.

I'll be 60 before the year ends, and they always blast me. You told truths about yourself just as I did 3 months ago. I get accused of lying, exaggerating, you name it.

I believe what you say about yourself. Give yourself a moniker, just as I have. Then when I see your posts, I'll say hello.

BTW, you are to be congratulated, not hammered. Look at the counter on the posts...138. That's because of you. You've made it a good day for DB.

Those idiots are all probably shit-faced drunk by now. They've had a hard day, you know.

Hi all,,

My name is Ravi and I am considering application to Chicago Graduate School of Business and Wharton School this Fall. I have 6 years of work experience at major IT company in India and I recently gave GMAT and received 780. I would like to start a career in private equity and wondering what is best way for me to do this? With my GMAT score, will I get into Wharton? With my GMAT score, once I am at Wharton, will I get into Kohlberg, Kravis & Roberts Co.?

146

Posted by guest, Jul 17, 2008 3:04AM

Dear Ravi,

As a fellow native of India who went to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology before a top-5 MBA in the US and now rolling with a job with a top-3 Consulting firm I feel you've got an excellent chance of getting into Chicago AND Wharton. Once there you not only have a very good chance of getting into Kohlberg, Kravis & Roberts, but also Blackstone, Carlyle, TPG, Bain, Apollo, Tommy Lee & Silver Lake. In fact, all the aforementioned firms are going to be begging for you to join them because you are smart Ravi from India with the 780 GMATs. In fact, a smaller firm such as Cerberus will insist on having you and will therefore double the offer that both KKR & Blackstone give you. Because they know that you are a baller in the making because you, like ME, are smart Indian guy. Of course your chances are reinforced if you were smart like me to go to IIT. But in any case your chances are excellent.

Viva la India!

Also, do you think it will be possible to have firm pay my relocation expense from Chicago to New York??? I currently only make approx. $10,000 USD/yr and will find difficult to relocate from Chicago to New York.

Bengalis@11;23,@3:04,@9:41...

Here's my take on your ambitions in the USA:

I call you 'Bengalis' instead of 'Indians' so as not to confuse you with decent Native Americans.

Bengalis = thieves + swindlers. You'll fit right in with the bums at KKR, BX, Carlyle, etc. You may even have a good shot at an MD job right out of school because those firms are looking for diversity...

HF/PE Diversity = Bengali style of theft + swindling.

I don't know one damn Bengali here in Delaware who is anything other than as I've discribed. No one I know has anything good to say about you either.

If I see Bengalis in a Dunkin' Donuts shop, I won't go inside. I know that by going in there I'd get coffee from reused coffee grounds and yesterday's breakfast sandwiches being served today because they didn't sell the morning before. You also conveniently forget how to speak English when someone complains.

Look at your 3 postings. Nothing but "me,me,me". "How much can I hold out for?". You fucking clowns haven't even been accepted to grad school yet, and you're already trying to get estimates on how big your future paydays are going to be.

Maybe you should reconsider Wharton. 70% of this year's Wharton MBA grads couldn't get jobs.

Maybe you should also stay in India, and keep answering those phone calls from catalog shoppers in the USA.

God has answered my prayers. I am an Indian, pure, virginal and I know how to cook, swab floors and be abused by men. I am currently working in a call center in India but can I please get married to you right away. If you want to see my bio-data and photo, let me know and I'll set it across. I bet you've also mastered the art of the Kama Sutra. I will make good good love to you. And I'll cook you food. Together, we can have 5-6 children who you can support on your KKR salary. Screw India, I'm boarding the plane with you before you even get to Wharton. Let me know when you leave.

So now we have to organize our parents meeting each other. Your (parent's) place or mine?

Ravi, you need to watch Van Wilder man. You are going to Wharton where you will learn the great American art of muff diving. Then you will wax that porpoise. Then you will juggle those tits to get milk. All in all its like going up the Ganges without a bamboo shaft.

169

Posted by guest, Jul 17, 2008 1:51PM

TGFD went to high school and some police department in the boonies. Also he thinks that "financials are where the action is". Because TGFD is all about them financials and such, I think Ravi should retain TGFD's services for career counseling for IB/PE/HF.

Also TGFD will work for nothing; he made his money yesterday by buying LEH bonds. So Ravi can afford him on $10000 a year.

170

Hi delaware guy.

discourage me?

hardly. i know the breed well. the average guy on this board has a shrine in their bedroom dedicated to stevie cohen which they masturbate furiously to each and every night after they get home late enough to get free black car service.

half of them are children of privilege trying to prove something to mommy and daddy who will pick them up if they fail, the other half are poor smart kids trying to figure out why the privileged kids get promoted before they do (*hint - their daddy has a 15mm account with your firm).

they mean no harm.
