The Rehabilitation of Brian Hunter

brianhuntermaybe.jpgBrian Hunter has done a great job of vanishing from the public eye since the collapse of Amaranth. Despite ongoing litigation with regulators, Hunter has more or less managed to keep his name out of the headlines. But this week Fortune's Bethany McLean tracks him down, and he agrees to talk to Fortune to explain that "he doesn't think that what has happened to him is exactly fair."

McLean knows this turf very well, having extensively reported on natural gas trading activities of a little company called Enron. It's easy to understand why Hunter would have looked at her as someone who might understand his trading beyond the standard approach accusing him of losing $6 billion. (Also, she's beautiful and charming, so that probably helped her get Hunter to talk too.) Unfortunately, the story McLean does get is pretty thin, unadorned by many details about what exactly Hunter thinks is unfair about his reputation. (Although she does a great job of describing the "Keystone Kops" at the FERC and the CFTC who are pursuing Hunter on different market manipulation charges.)

We're told by a person familiar with the matter that Hunter despises Nick Maounis, the founder of Amaranth. Hunter privately argues that the collapse of Amaranth was more the fault of Maounis than his own energy trades. As evidence of this, he points to fact that Citadel was able to turn a profit on those trades. Judging from McLean's article, however, Hunter isn't quite ready to go public with these thoughts.

Entertainingly, Fortune didn't manage to get a photograph of Hunter. As far as we can tell, no one in media has his picture. (Our picture is merely an artistic "representation" of Brian Hunter and some guy holding him in both hands.)

Carney, how long have you been hitting that? Bethany's smitten, can't go more than a paragraph without mentioning dealbreaker.

Beautiful?! You've got to have better standards. She's not a beast but she's no Liz Claman.

You've got to be kidding me! Liz Claman looks like a wildebeest! Bethany is far more attractive, and carries a strong Irish name. I still don't get the Claman obsession around here. She looks post-op.

I'm sick of looking at that asshole's picture on DB every few weeks. Why doesn't someone just kill the fucking thief, and then a photo of his mangled corpse can be used to discourage others who are tempted to follow in Hunter's footsteps.

At least Claman isn't a damn Ginger.

Neither of them are Trish Regan or Erin Burnett though...

Yeah, lets take it easy with the gorgeous statements. Now Trish Regan on the other hand....

Trish Regan. Are you out of your mind?

Barbara Bush on the other hand...

Liz and Trish are an interesting pair...both with a very nice pair. Trish apparantly bathes in bronzer, while Liz wears her easily sunburnt, fair skin with pride.

A better question is, which one would be more fun to make into the Angry Pirate?

I'll be casting my vote for the quick/jarvis ticket.
Anyone WB likes that much is good enough for me.

seriously, the far east is under-represented in on CNBC US. Let's get some flavor on the screen to entice me to tune in more often. Melissa Lee? Nice try...

Clareville desert

The offices of Clareville Capital are looking increasingly like founder David Yarrow 's book of photographs of the world's most desolate places.

Yesterday Mr Yarrow took on Angus Donaldson , a former head of UK equity sales at Dresdner Kleinwort whose own hedge fund shut down in March, to help him pick stocks. But Mr Donaldson is joining a stripped-down version of Clareville, an 11-year-old hedge fund that features Lord Marland as chairman. Ex-Formula One team manager Eddie Jordan and Carphone Warehouse founders David Ross and Charles Dunstone are non-executive directors.

Out went its emerging markets fund last year, bought by management with the backing of Sir John Bond , whose son helps run the renamed Kudu. Out went several staff. Out went the India fund last month, shut down after weak demand in a tough market. And yesterday out went Roy Hay , operating officer, who has moved on.

Mr Yarrow says the focus now is on its £61m Pegasus fund and its leveraged sibling, which have had trouble getting off the ground. Pegasus made little last year and was flat this year after giving up all its profits this month.

"It is incredibly frustrating, but it has happened to just about everybody," he said. "There are very few areas to hide in the market. Sooner or later there's going to be money to be made so you have just got to hang around and make sure you are in the game."

Very..what
Lord who? Eddie who? which garage does he run? Reader, is there something that even your comatose parent could understand about all this?
-And above all, why do the people who fire the boilers of this biz in London get, as usual, no credit..the hookers?
