This morning Wall Street was smirking over the possibility that an intern at Goldman Sachs had resorted to working as a stripper because her position at the firm was unpaid. Within Goldman, the possibility had launched speculation about exactly which intern might be the stripper. Outside of the firm, it was being treated as a delicious scandal.
But is there really a stripper working at Goldman?
"At last those arrogant SOBs get to be embarrassed," one banker at a rival firm said.
"Actually, one of my high school friend's sister who is insanely hot and whose post graduation job at BS [Bear Stearns] obviously fell through is currently interning at GS," a commenter said on DealBreaker.
The story began as a quote on the popular Overheard In NY website. A female patron encountered a stripper who claimed that it was her first day and that she had taken the job because her internship at Goldman was unpaid.
Sadly, the story of the stripper in the heart of Goldman is probably not true. Goldman Sachs has no unpaid internships, according to a spokesperson for the firm. This means that at least the part about being in an "unpaid" internship is false. And while it is possible the stripper is in a paid internship, and was merely hoping to win sympathy for her poor economic situation from the customer, we're inclined to believe the entire Goldman angle was made up.

Bess,
Have you ever been to a strip club?
Posted by guest , Aug 04, 2008 2:52PM
Oh my god, who cares

bess,
glad you can connect with a stripper

Actually I usually say that as a customer to get charitable contributions.

I have never had a bad time in a strip club. Well, there was that one about 10 miles west of Omaha that was kind of depressing, but I never had a bad time at any of the clubs in Houston. Never, ever, ever. I did meet a girl who used to work for an oil trading company at a place called Baby O's in Houston long ago. She was experiencing hard times (pardon the pun) after the oil bust and hey a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. Let us not forget that GS ran off their Latin American hot-shot some years back due to his "gentlemen's club" tabs in the lower hemisphere (pardon th pun again, please.).

JC, when's the last time you got some?
All these posts from you about sex during the recession (or lack thereof), and strippers is leading me to believe that it's been so long since you got laid you're practically a virgin again.

Asset stripper, fool!!! TN

I know for a fact that GS has unpaid internships. They may not be called internships internally, and usually involve some sort of coordination with a b-school, but these do exist. So I think the whole stripper story makes sense.

Nothing wrong with a having a professional job with a major corporation that lets you work with a stripper! See job responsibility 1 at the attached safe-for-work link.

other large firms do have unpaid internships. most are non-ibanking departments, i.e. marketing. where there is a likelier chance stripper girl came from.

Guest 10 & 11,
Please email me some details on this so I can follow-up with Goldman.
@8: No comment.

Maybe GS sent this intern on a secret mission to conduct some due diligence on the Adult Entertainment industry. We all know that Gaming, Lodging and Liesure is one sector that is not affected by recessions, hence Goldman might be trying to figure out best of breed.

You want to know how I know this story is fake? Women don't go to strip clubs! And if you believe everything on "Overheard" is true, I've got some nice high quality CDOs to sell you.

The club will probably be better for her on a cash flow basis until something changes at GS
Posted by guest , Aug 04, 2008 6:17PM
The real question is how can a girl work until 2 AM during the week and then make it into Goldman during regular business hours.
Posted by trojan , Aug 04, 2008 6:32PM
from experience at spearmints out west, i can safely say the closest a stripper comes to finance is learning real estate at community college. either that or they are strippers b/c they worked in real estate.
Posted by guest , Aug 04, 2008 8:53PM
know a girl that interned at GSAM last semester unpaid, unpaid internships definitely exist
Posted by guest , Aug 04, 2008 11:10PM
I don't know if GS has unpaid internships or not. But why do people do unpaid internships? Because they don't need the money. So I am afraid this delightful tale (sorry) is just that.
Posted by guest , Aug 04, 2008 11:14PM
does a blow job add to cv at goldman sucks?
Posted by guest , Aug 05, 2008 4:36AM
@ 2 and 5 - Carney posted the story, not Bess... you illiterate apes.
@16 , 17 and 18.... yes girls do visit strip clubs, how do I know? I have seen them "getting" lap dances.... esp in Vegas...
@ 26 unpaid internships exist because it may be the only way these people can get through the door at places like GS or DB... they hope to impress for free, and get a perm contract when graduating.
I have unpaid "work experience" interns every year... they do things like filing, fetching coffee, inputting rough data into spreadsheets, putting together presentations, etc etc
If they happen to be eye candy at the same time so much the better...

that was a beautiful roundup, you formulated well thought out responses to all of the pressing questions and comments here.
if you ever feel you want to get a real job, aside for reading blogs at 4am, I'm sure DB would be happy to interview you.

Define: Intern, unpaid, stripper, and job.
Goldman Sucks can't be trusted with one work in the english language, let alone someone's sister.

One day I'll be a hot shot Goldman trader...I'll be jacked and tan with my Tim Seymour hair slicked back.

Strippers routinely make phony claims about having professional jobs outside the club; doesn't that suggest a more likely explanation for this rumor?
