FDIC Numbers Show Bank Crisis Gaining Steam

Federal Deposit Insurance Corp data released this afternoon show 117 banks and thrifts were considered to be in trouble in the second quarter, up from 90 in the prior quarter. That's being headlined as the worst number since 2003 but it's even worse than that. At the end of 2007, there were 76 banks on the list. In the first quarter we added 14. In the second quarter, we added twenty-seven to the total. (Actually, its worse than that since the actual failed banks are taken off the list, meaning we've added more than the total indicates). In short, the deterioration of banks is accelerating.

no your FACE is posting now.

@2,

Tears of laughter at the office. Very much appreciated.

6

Posted by guest , Aug 26, 2008 5:12PM

@5 Thought I would spice it up a bit with something I just got a hold of. Others should feel free to post the counterpoint. It's a free country...until January 20, 2009 that is.

6 Some might argue that the opposite holds true.

8

7, those people would be ignorant

Yes, some people are morons.

Ho ho ho. Post No. 2 is from Mr. Right Wing Ron Obvious. Just for openers: Ted Kennedy is dying from a brain tumor. I doubt he is involved in much partying.

What kind of people greeted this banal crap with "tears of laughter?"

12

@11 People with a sense of humor?

JC: Thanks for posting a great summary. I don't make a habit of reading the FDIC's quarterly banking profile and think most won't get the full impact unless they read the headlines of the document. It's hard to see good news, or even a light at the end of the tunnel.

Second-Quarter Earnings Are 87 Percent Below Year-Earlier Level

Market-Sensitive Revenues Remain Weak

Margins Show Little Change as Average Yields and Funding Costs Fall

Net Charge-Off Rate Rises to Highest Level Since 1991

Noncurrent Loan Rate Rises Above 2 Percent for the First Time Since 1993

+Six more similar bad news headlines.

14

Posted by guest , Aug 26, 2008 9:02PM

@11, Oh No! You're right! It can't possibly be funny, with such gross factual errors as assuming that Ted Kennedy is in a partying mood. It's probably loaded with other factual errors, too. Sigh. Everyone knows satire has to be absolutely 100% factually true in every respect, or it's just not funny.

15

Posted by guest , Aug 26, 2008 9:21PM

@11, agreed. I wish Mr. Right Wing Ron Obvious could do a little better than the this-is-a-democrat-through-the-eyes-of-a-republican cliches, but let's be honest, that'd be asking a little much. But if that's how they want to play, we're game, right?

your repeated jabs about ted kennedy being a drunk and killing the aide would be a lot more damning if Mr. Bush wasn't a recovering alcoholic and Mrs. Bush hadn't killed a boy running a red light.

Well, the stuff about Ted Kennedy and Mary Jo Kopechne would be a little more biting if it didn't take place 40 YEARS AGO.

It's like John McCain losing count of his houses -- "Hey, I was a prisoner of war for six and a half years." Yes, 40 YEARS AGO.

imo, people who support obama do not excel at thinking for themselves. so much propaganda to essentially elect an intern to be CEO

24

Posted by guest , Aug 26, 2008 11:53PM

The last DB poll on the subject had more DB readers supporting Barack Obama than any other candidate across the Presidential field. So those people do not excel at thinking for themselves?

25

Posted by guest , Aug 27, 2008 12:08AM

hah so you're suggesting people on wall st tend to succumb to groupthink? blasphemy!

26

Posted by guest , Aug 27, 2008 9:11AM

@ 2 -- you rock. completely lays waste to the drivel of the left.

@ all -- wrt FDIC data, lets put on our thinking caps and propose that the # of banks on the list is roughly in proportion to the increase in the number of charters that are new as of the real-estate boom.

i.e. lots of "excess capacity" coming to its inevitable end.

(separately, as is usually the case, many among the casualties will be those who just couldn't keep up with Wall Street's fast talk...caveat emptor).

27

Posted by Anal_yst , Aug 27, 2008 9:24AM

@ 24

You're assuming that the sample is reflective of the population, which it most likely is not. Similarly to how Rpaul votes always come up much higher in samples than in the population, I'm pretty sure very few people on Wall Street want their taxes jacked up to 50%

28

Posted by guest , Aug 27, 2008 9:30AM

analyst, yr a smart boy. Defecits are through the roof, there is in fact relatively little entitlement spending in the federal budget and of that most is off limits. Yr taxes are gonna go up whoever is elected.

29

Posted by Anal_yst , Aug 27, 2008 10:08AM

@ 28

While that may very well be the case, have you seriously looked @ what Obama wants to do?

His social redistributionist rhetoric, even if only actually implemented in part, would severely f&ck sh!t up on a grand scale, far worse than anything the republicans are capable of doing.

30

Posted by guest , Aug 27, 2008 10:16AM

@28--I wish you'd finish fifth grade before you post again. OK?

31

Posted by guest , Aug 27, 2008 10:23AM

Please name some entitlements ripe for the cutting (and provide $ amounts), assuming McCain is elected. A little more difficult than writing a snarky but empty remark, right loser?

As the Daily Show said last night, something to the effect that the Republican Party is where everyone loves America, but hate 50% of the people who live in it. I say 50% is quite a low ball figure.

Back to the topic at hand, the FDIC has a watch list, but be more concerned about the banks that are not in that list and should be. They tend to be bigger.
