How Many Layoffs at Lehman?

Reuters has now chimed in on the Lehman Brothers layoff rumors, saying 1,200 folks will lose their jobs. This puts them right between the New York Times estimate of 1,500 and the Bloomberg story putting the number at 1,000.

(Also, this is weird: the Reuters story is timestamped 8:53 PM but it's up now.)

"America has no pity left for the Wall Street banker."

Should we? I would think not.

Getting fired/laid off sucks no matter what (unless you're ralph cioffi and massively deserved it or something along those lines), no matter if you're making $40k/year or $4m

Misery is relative. I have 0 pity for anyone that gets laid off after a decent career run and could effectively retire. Granted it's a blow to the ego, but then so is male pattern baldness. In both cases it's pretty easy to read the writing on the wall and mentally prepare yourself.

Anyone else early in their career or mid-career and trying to support a family I can empathize with.

Probably a good time to bail out too. It's not like your restricted stocks will be vested if you stick around. There is nothing romantic about going down with the ship these days.

Can someone explain why Lehman had 12+ classified ads in the Sunday New York Times advertising for bankers/CDO analysts/finance and risk pros., etc.? Their p.r. people cannot possibly have orchestrated such a move (if they were in touch enough, Erin Callan wouldn't have happened). Is the whole lay-off thing just a sop for the Street and, if they are really hiring, what kind of numbskulls would be interviewing there (at this point they'd be better off at the multiple 3rd tier int'l banks that are also hiring)?

Thousands of x-Lehman employees who refused to swallow the cool-aid Fuld was handing out are currently watching an organization built upon lies and ego
go down the drain...too bad it took several decades for justice to prevail.

It's sad. They wrecked a great company. Cool culture. They were special.

If the mortgage securitiztation team and fixed income lawyers who let them get into this mess are still there next week...I'm selling my stock...and calling a class-action attorney.
