Charlie Gasparino reports that desperate-for-cash Lehman Brothers is considering selling its entire investment management unit (which includes stakes in private equity firms and hedge funds such as DE Shaw and GLG partners), rather than just Neuberger Berman. And as a full-service variety show act, also refers to himself as "just a country reporter," and gives a shout out to JSC.

the DE part must be worth something. That guy mints money.

Mr. Shaw forgot to sign his name to post #1 in this thread.
Posted by guest , Aug 05, 2008 11:23AM
is this really an optimistic sign? that they are parting ways with a major division, ala merrill and possible blackrock sale?
Posted by guest , Aug 05, 2008 11:26AM
I think you guys need to start drawing pictures on your photos that you post.
Charlie's mouth in that picture is just asking for it.

i know it's obvious, but i have to get it off my chest: gasparino's an idiot
Posted by guest , Aug 05, 2008 11:31AM
Gasparino is a great reporter though -
Posted by guest , Aug 05, 2008 11:33AM
I think he's very good too #6, and he's seen enough stuff go down to know what will work and not.
Even though I like Corzine, I think what he wants to do will really hurt Wall St.

that dylan guy just complemented gaspo on his story, "great reporting, great scoop, blah, blah, blah..." great scoop? try great that you read the "nypost" who seems to have been reporting this story for the last few days when LEH was signing up LAZ to sniff around. that's akin to cnbc saying cramer called the crash last year. what a bunch of b*llocks.
anyway, is cnbc giving a don corleone smooch to LEH? wasn't it their reporting of BSC shopping its prime brokerage biz around that caused a big dash to the exits? maybe it's different now that there are fewer PBs around for the hedgies to run to, but like #3 notes, is this really optimistic?

Yep to Post #8. NYPost been doing this all week. CNBC'ers just giving each other back-slaps while they intersperse their own appearances on Leno and Conan between commercials(uh, NBC just pimping its sister networks, right?). Gimme Foxys Alexis, Liz and Sandra on Leno and then I'd watch.
Bess! Holler when CNBC gets back to reporting the news. mebbe I'll switch back from Fox Business

I'm not a Gasparino-hater, but what's this "just a country reporter" shtick? What country would that be?
Posted by guest , Aug 05, 2008 12:30PM
What do people think we ultimately happen with Lehman Brothers
Posted by guest , Aug 05, 2008 12:31PM
how many 'scoops' has gasbag gotten wrong? this is like dollar dominatrix - people only care bout the one thing u said right, forgetting all ur earlier wolf calls....

Gasparino roams the New Jersey countryside in his IROC-Z camaro and a Gold's Gym wifebeater.

@14
Are you sure it wasn't a decked out Sonata with tinted windows and spinners?
Posted by guest , Aug 05, 2008 12:38PM
My biggest annoyance with CNBC and their reporters is that although I truly believe they are all good reporters - and this goes with journalists alike - they're always looking for a story, and they "spin" things in order to make their story. With CNBC being the major news outlet and broadcasted on pretty much every trading floor i've ever been on - their broadcasts DO move the markets to a certain extent. The whole rumour mongering that went on around BSC was definitely fueled, increased, whatever because of CNBC. Reporters and CNBC need to be held accountable and keep some of their opinions to themselves and off the air.

HEY #10......Stay with Fox guy. CNBC has been building in a lot of High Net Worth programming. If you are over the $250 a year group...ok, otherwise you'll appreciate the Foxes on FBN. To my knowledge, the married ladies on Fox are living by their vows. Not to sure about the other side.
Posted by guest , Aug 05, 2008 12:47PM
16- Totally agree with you. Unfortunately, there's this silly thing called the first amendment that ensures journalists (or anybody else!) can speak their opinion on any subject at any time. I know, I know--ridiculous, right? This legislation may have been applicable before the advent of securitazation and the repo market, but it should definately be purged from the books now.

Hey #16....I have said for a long time, the CNBC personalities are carrying agendas and if you read their bios, you will know who and why. You are correct about the opinions part, BUT, many networks pay the truly knowledgeable for their ability to ad lib truth into a story. Good luck guys.

@ 16
Wait, TV "journalists" spinning "stories" to get more attention?
HOGWASH! I shant believe it!
Posted by guest , Aug 05, 2008 1:02PM
I would imagine there are huge restrictions on the ability to sell DE Shaw interests. Like David would have to actually approve of something like Wachovia's "prop desk" getting to write notes on top of Oculus.

#4 I agree - looks like drool on his clip-on tie
#11 That country would be "Booklin" (not for nuttin)
#14 I could see that image as well. For those not in the know, IROC = Italian Retard Out Cruising
Am I the only one who thinks Tony Danza in Taxi when watching this Jabroni ?

"I'm just a country reporter" is a paraphrase of a famous comment going back to Watergate. Sam Ervin, an elder Congressman from the deep South in the 1970's, really had an innate sense of where Watergate was headed and that the President was involved. On TV, he came across as a country bumpkin with a deep drawl when in fact he was an astute attorney. When he was asked about his role in the coming impeachment of Nixon, he replied, "I'm just a country lawyer."

25--you're giving gasparino way, way too much credit if you think he's making that reference. he may have heard others making the reference and is just repeating the line, but i seriously doubt he knows the origin.
Posted by guest , Aug 05, 2008 2:40PM
the poster who says CNBC reporters have an agenda is right. The agenda is "I'll crush you if you go with my colleague so you better go on with me!" I don't get that sense on Fox and they give CEO's and traders more time to give the story.
