Wal-Mart profit climbs 17%, ups 2008 goal (MarketWatch)
A solid earnings report is always a solid earnings report, but you know, it's Wal-Mart, so it could mean all kinds of things. Maybe the low end consumer isn't doing that bad. Or maybe there are a lot more low end consumers than there used to be. Actually, that's pretty much the crux of the debate. Here's the actual report.
Olympic Medal Count
Can't say we're real happy to wake up and see this: The US and China are tied at 33 medals a piece. It helps China that in one swimming event they took both gold and silver last night, and that there weren't many men's swimming finals. Tonight there are a few, and the Americans should rack up several. But still. Then again, we should be okay once the Track & Field portion of the games start. Just can't fall behind.
Greenspan Blasts Mortgage Fix (WSJ)
Now he tells us! Alan! You think we should dissolve Fannie and Freddie? We agree. But why wait 'til now to come out and say this. Why wait 'til the moment when you have the reputation of being just another ex-Fed Prez that can't stand to be out of the conversation. How credible is that? Again, you're right, but too bad your standpoint will have all the effect of John Edwards' endorsement of Obama. And that's not a reference to his affair at all -- just the fact that his endorsement came after it was irrelevant.
Borders' Larger Rival Is Unlikely to Make a Bid (WSJ)
Tough break for struggling book chain Borders, which won't be selling out to rival Barnes & Noble, which is struggling, but just not quite as much. Evidently the would-be acquirer found financing tough. It's a product of the economic environment, sure. It's also, fundamentally, the market pre-empting what might've been a very bad idea.
Flight of the dead: Suburban families move loved ones from Detroit cemeteries (Detroit News)
Whoa, this is amazing. Detroit's population of dead people is declining. Families are actually paying, sometimes $5,000 a pop, to have the remains of their dead relatives move to the suburbs. It's gotten so bad, apparently, that folks won't even go into Detroit proper to visit the graves of the decased. Wild. Read the whole thing, and there's a video! (via MarginalRevolution)
Must the Government Combat Americans' Addiction to Foreign Bananas? (The Independent Institute)
We'll save you some time: This article isn't actually about bananas. Instead bananas are used as a joke, like... well if it's bad to be addicted to foreign oil, then it must be bad to be addicted to foreign-grown bananas. And since nobody really believes the latter, why do we believe the former? Ok, kind of reductionist. But it is actually a good point.
Best Buy's Break-Even iPhone Deal (Bits)
We mentioned yesterday that it seemed pretty unlikely that Best Buy would make much money by selling iPhones. As we noted, Apple likes to put the screws to its partners, and make the partner enjoy getting a raw deal. AT&T bragged about bagging the iPhone, saying how great it was -- then it said it had to lower its profit estimates. So anyway, one analyst agrees with us. Best Buy isn't likely to make much money -- perhaps a little, but not nearly as much as on the other phone. So if you go in there and buy one, expect pushy salespeople to offer you all kinds of protective cases and iTunes gift cards along with your purchase.
Eurozone economy contracts (FT)
For the first time since the launch of the euro a decade ago, the Eurozone economy contracted for the three months ending in June. So how is the US econ holding up again?

China is actually ahead of the US by a LOT. And that is according to how the rest of the world (including unofficial endorsement from the IOC) tallies county rankings for medals. Why do Americans like inventing their own standards to give themselves illusions of grandeur?

Please explain this new counting system used by the more enlightened nations.

CHN: Gold 22, Silver 8, Bronze 5, Total 35
USA: Gold 10, Silver 9, Bronze 15, Total 34
Analysis left to the readers.

The spanish basketball team and their love for the slant eye is clearly the winner in all of this.

who else is sick of the olympics
Posted by guest , Aug 14, 2008 9:13AM
Obviously the appropriate Olympic benchmark is gold medals in swimming.

#1, whatever reasoning you are using is ridiculous. It's called a "medal count", not a "gold metal" count. Fine, China has more gold medals, and the US probably will (should) end up with more once T&F kicks off. Makes MUCH more sense to look at overall medals, as it is a better indication of a nation's overall athletic ability. If we used your reasoning, a Country A with ONE gold medal is superior to Country B with 10 silver and 10 bronze medals. No one could justify that logic. It's much too early in the morning to listen to someone like you talk about things that you clearly have no clue about.

@ 4 - You are not an idiot (just in case you were hit w/ a bit of self doubt after 3's reactionary comment). Counting by gold, silver, bronze is the most obvious way to determine performance, i.e 3 points for gold, 2 for Silver and so on. Although saying all this, and to answer 6, yes i am fucking sick of the olympics. I have been since before it started as the sports are largely unexciting. Maybe you guys were into swimming, judo & equestrian a few months back. but I have always seen them as dull....

Michael Phelps puts mayo on his breakfast sandwiches
Posted by guest , Aug 14, 2008 9:26AM
sorry for the double post, its also clearly much to early in the morning for me to be posting...
Posted by guest , Aug 14, 2008 9:28AM
#12, he definitely does, did you read about his 12,000 calorie per day diet? it's insane. I wouldn't be suprised if he just eats mayo sandwiches...

6, 10 You're missing the point. Phelps and Lezak are amazingly hot. Simple as that. GAnalYst

#9, you are setting up a straw-man argument on behalf of #1. #1 is saying each medal hould be given a point value (ie: 5 for gold, 3 for silver and 1 for bronze) and calculate total 'points'. This obviously makes more sense than saying 10 bronze medals is a better showing than 9 goals. A further step would be to assign multipliers to each of the events (ie: 100m dash winner receives 10x points, 100m freestyle winner receives 1x points, rythmic gymnastics winner receives 0.1x points).

oh, and 14: Before you go typing anymore, you should look up the def of "mayo" on Urban Dictionary. GAnalYst

@GAnalYst-- and what about Lochte?!?!
Posted by guest , Aug 14, 2008 9:34AM
@ GAnalYst - thats where you have the upper hand on the straight guys (so to speak). You have good looking, athletic guys, we have a load of butch as you like moon-pigs.
Posted by guest , Aug 14, 2008 9:36AM
Yes, Lochte too. Totally yummy. How can you not like this stuf? GAnalYst

19 Congratulations. Simply acknowledging that you have a problem is the first step and is often the most difficult. Let me know when you're ready to move further. I'll give you some pointers. GAnalYst

Okay, I just looked up "mayo" on urban dictionary, and I'm more confused than ever.

@ GAnalYst - thanks for the offer of assistance, however I think i will ride this problem out by myself & move to watching beach volleyball and the various little secretaries on the floor.
ps - my firm is so fucking tight, they have blocked urban freaking dictionary as well. wtf???
Posted by guest , Aug 14, 2008 10:32AM
@ GAnalYst - You are also forgetting Aaron Peirsol. I think he is the dreamiest of all.
@ #19 at 9:34 - I hope you are just talking about mens swimming, because if you aren't, you are obviously not watching womens beach vollyball, diving, gymnastics etc. etc. There are many hot ladies in the olympics.
For those of you who don't think the olympics are fun/exciting, you obviously didn't see the US vs. Italy in womens waterpolo yesterday. The Italians brought out Casanova, their 6'1, 220 lb. secret weapon, and she was dunking bitches left and right. She even had on a sexy nose guard. Who says the olympics aren't entertaining?

Chinese trolls are out on all forums (just saw a ton of them on the economist).
I didn't know that their government actually allows them to access DB!
Anways, between kidnapping kids at age 2 and then training them to be machines so that they can participate by age 12 while faking passports to show that they are 16, the Chinese are doing fairly well. Just like the erstwhile USSR, Romania, Bulgaria etc etc. Those countries also used to TOTALLY kick-ass in their time and feel good about it.
Posted by guest , Aug 14, 2008 11:46AM
25 Peirsol is a babe, but for me the prize goes to Phelps. I love the way that in photos his suit sits just above his pubes. Such a teaze. GAnalYst

Oh, while you may not all agree, let me admit in the interest of full disclosure that I also find the Hamm boys interesting in a two-brothers-as-part-of a-kinky-threesome kind of way. Too bad they didn't make it this year. GAnalYst

They don't kidnap those kids. They were recruited with full parents consent . All parents in the world wanted to have an Olympic protegee kid/s . If you call that "kidnapping" let it be but here's the difference: in China they trained those kids to become great sportmen/women but here in America they rape and kill those kids....see the diffference?

As European and we find it wonderful if another country collects a lot of medals other than the U.S for a change. I can see and feel now that Americans will be going nuts and increasingly become insecure and felt threatened vis a vis China's economic rise and medal dominance (although it's still early to tell).
Posted by guest , Aug 14, 2008 9:14PM
# 30 i concur. u r very right
Posted by guest , Aug 15, 2008 3:26PM
Chinese troll # 30, its 'prodigy' not 'protegee' (actually that should have been protégé) but whatever. If the government is recruiting 2-yr olds 'with full parental consent' that makes it totally awesome I guess. Who cares if the kid wants to be a gymnast or not. I mean the soviets were awesome, first in space and all that shit you know :)
#31, we all get your euro-angst, being tiny little weaklings who have to go begging around for someone to save your pansy ass every time you get in trouble. I mean take out the billions the US spent on you and the implicit millitary protection it provided, you also could have had been 'recruited with your parent's consent' and become a 'protegee'!
The day the US govt starts recruiting 2-yr olds 'with parental consent' for the sake of winning a few more medals, I will but the fact that the US is feeling 'insecure.'
We all know who is 'insecure' and hence needs to coordinate and plan and train and kidnap to win a few more medals. If you have a big dick, you dont need to stuff socks and wearer tighter pants, you see.

@30-- "in China they trained those kids to become great sportmen/women"
Yes, as long as the kid is the first child. Otherwise, it's a forced abortion.
