So Long To All That

Farewell DealBreaker.jpgI almost didn’t answer the phone when DealBreaker came calling. It was a Sunday afternoon and I was sitting in a bar somewhere in Brooklyn. The phone was sitting on the bar next to a pack of smokes and a pint of Six Point. A glass of whiskey was in my hand. The phone buzzed, shimmying on the bar a bit. The girl I was drinking with gave me that look girls give you when you consider answering your phone in the middle of a conversation with them. That’s probably why I answered it.
It was Elizabeth Spiers. She asked if I would be interested in writing for her new financial website. I wasn’t working at all in those days, unless you count pretending to freelance and writing pieces of a novel once a week as working. I told her yes. When did she want me to start? Monday. And so the next day I became an ink-stained wretch, reporting the follies and foibles of Wall Street.
We’ve come a long way. In those early days–two and half years ago–the excesses bred by wealth and entitlement provided fodder for my writing. There was this government sponsored mortgage company that should have been delisted but got the New York Stock Exchange to bend the rules for it. Some kids engaged in the zaniest insider trading scheme ever. Another kid made a video about himself, proclaiming “Impossible Is Nothing.” Steve Schwarzman threw himself a birthday party that would have made the Marie Antoinette blush. It was heady times but we knew, even then, that the end was coming.
Lately we’ve spent our time covering the collapse, the fall of the titans. Now Wall Street is busy shoring up its ruins, plotting the rebuild its empire. In the course of my two and a half years at DealBreaker I’ve watched the masters of the universe become welfare queens, tin cup in hand, begging for protection and subsidies from the government. Millionaires and billionaires who want taxpayers to rescue them from market processes. And it looks like we’re going to do it.
Today is my last day at DealBreaker. I leave you in the capable hands of Bess Levin, my writing companion for the past 130 weeks or so, while I move on to other forums. Equity Private and a special surprise writer will be around to help out. You’ve been the best readers a writer could hope for. Thank you for your tips, your comments and for reading. Thanks, really, for going along with me all this way.
For those of you still on Wall Street or wondering what to do next, I’ll offer a four pieces of advice. Remember that we’ll get through this mess we’re in, and we’ll have great stories to tell about it for the rest of our lives. Never work in a job that makes you miserable. Love your family, help your friends. Buy drinks for strangers.
There’s the closing bell. My work here is done.

  16. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 4:29 PM

What a douche. Hey buddy — you were writing for a financial blog, not O Magazine. I feel like I just read the book jacket to some cheesedick romance novel. You’re no better than the power tool investment bankers you ridiculed every day. I know that on your last day you feel the need to justify your existence, but get a grip on yourself.

  17. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Can you kick Equity Private in the twig and berries on the way out the door? If I were you, i would get Bess nice and tanked and give her a proper rodgering at the going away party. Best of luck you jackknob

    Carney,
Thanks for all of your posts. You’ve been both entertaining and informative. You’ve helped me get through my day as a coding monkey for Big Law’s doc review project. Thanks man. Stop by Whiskey River @ 2nd Ave and 31st tonight. They got some great single malt scotches and a great selection of beers.

Carney – you should make the setting in which you received the DB offer a bit more believeable. Start with subtracting the “with a girl” bit; we all know you don’t know any girls. By the way, where’s your friend’s absinthe bar located? Any good? Just realized it was legalized in NYC recently.

    Theory-
Mayo, Shamwow guy was Henry Bloget trying to make this place look like a circus so Carney would want to pull up anchor for a more “mature” harbour.
John- I don’t really know you, but I wish you all the best. I’ve read a bunch of Bloget’s stuff (on slate, and I read his book, Wall Street Survival Guide) and he seems very intellectually honest. In a media world (unfortunately) dominated by C-Gaspar, Lou Dobbs, Jim Cramer and other populist, alarmist meatheads, intellectual honesty is in short supply. My belief is that the two of you will work out well.
    Warmly,

    What’s going to happen to “JO&C” ?
Equity Private doesn’t do it for me. Sounds like an amateur that shops in the old “cadette” section in Sears.
Or like one of those D-List faux cartoons you watched in between Bugs and Flintstones.

  94. Posted by i love your cooking and you | September 19, 2008 at 5:39 PM

JC was an indispensible part of DB’s allure. He always hooked up the peanut gallery with tips he gathered from his network of smarty friends. Does Bess Levin have the hookups? Does she have friends? Equity Private, as cocksure as he is, doesn’t seem all that concerned about passing tips on from one dude to the next. He’s more about the razzle dazzle of his esoteric knowledge. Fuck him. Bess, she can’t help herself, so she’s ok.
But, whoever the new Big Dick is, he/ she/ they (if a tranny) better be generous with the tips and JC-esque enlightening analysis. If not, well then…an empty seat will open up in the peanut gallery.

I hope you archived my comment 14 months ago in the July JP Morgan earnings post where I told everyone this collapse was going to happen.
When people reflect on this time and say no one (except John Paulson) saw this coming. Know that one of the first Deal Breaker readers (yes, I was even on the site before it was “live”) told everyone what was to come.
I hope your journeys treat you well and the rest of you bitches quit whining and get back to selling assets. Because in 3 months or so, it’ll be buying time again and I hope we’re all still around to enjoy the after party.

Nothing about Equity Private razzle dazzles me and just thinking he even has private parts creeps me out.
Reading his posts is like coming home and finding generic store brand cornflakes in your pantry.
You tell yourself you won’t know the difference and proceed to pour some in a bowl and add milk.
“See? Looks exactly the same”, you (lie) to yourself.
And then you take that first spoonful.
It is inedible. Hopefully you are alone because now you have to decide what to do with that mushy mouthful.
Spit or swallow. Remember, we’re talking Equity Private here.
I take the former. Bring me the spitoon.

Equity Private is a woman. I’m not creeped out AT ALL thinking about HER privates.
also, I find her writing to be excellent. and look forward to more of her posts at DB, which are different in style from her posts at her own site, which I also enjoy.

  107. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 6:09 PM

Carney — I’m a bit interested in this move you’re making. Seems curious. You’re not punching out into the ether like Emily from Gawker. You’re not getting a “real job” in traditional media like Will Lietch of Deadspin. You’re choosing the Alex Balk route of taking another website position? Not sure this is a solid move for you.
Regardless, I wish you well and hope you learn that regulation is your friend.

    Maybe a tranny?
    Either way, unreadable.
I will definitely be spending less time on the site. Always feel like we’re being left with the incompetent substitute when s/he posts.
Don’t know how Carney can leave us in the middle of all this carnage.

  112. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 6:26 PM

Good luck JC, can you please take Equity Private with you and leave us with a Bess only site?

Good Luck Carney. guess i wont have to buy you that drink after all. i’ll buy Bess two.

    @106,
EP is a woman… Confirmed… The rest is up to you to decide… She kicked my ass at chess… 6 out 6 games… I didn’t get her into check twice in the same match until the 6th game.
She is/was a grandmaster level player for what it is worth…

    John,
Congratulations on all the success here at dealbreaker and on the few position. I definately enjoyed your writing and it will be missed. Whoever is taking your position has big shoes to fill.
    best,

  116. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 6:37 PM

gals, ep is obviously really smart, has humor, and a certain style that you might or might not like. oh, and i think she has a rather well paying job other than db. in any case (at least for me) it makes sense to read when smart people write. im looking forward to her posts.
@carney: it was great reading your posts and have a good trip!

  117. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 6:41 PM

So long Carney, all the best! You did great coverage last weekend.
    I’m with #105, #106 about EP.
#116 – with a Carney-EP swap, dealbreaker is likely checkmate.

  118. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 6:43 PM

    @116 —
I guess we have to ask how good a chess player you are. ;)
While it’s impressive that EP kicked your butt 6 times, how does that translate into her being a skilled DB contributor? Just wondering…
(I dread making this comparison, but isn’t that like Palin claiming to be an expert on foreign policy because she can see Russia from her house?? *)
*Disclaimer – that was not a veiled attempt at degenerating this into a heated political discussion.

  119. Posted by i love your cooking and you | September 19, 2008 at 6:44 PM

I don’t get why the fuck being a grandmaster at chess is supposed to be impressive? Playing chess is no different than any other task- like tying a good shoelace, wrapping a gift really nicely, or doing long multiplication in your head. If you suck at it, with practice you can get better.
Equity Private still sucks ass at writing articles for a financial gossip blog.

  122. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 7:15 PM

    Carney,
Best of luck. It was awesome reading your work. You certainly went out on top of your game with covering the MER sale to BAC and the AIG collapse – beat those fucks at MSM. You did it, did it well and most important did it with style and panache. And fuck’em if they didn’t like it. We did.
Enjoy your new gig…just don’t fuck it up because once we say adios here that’s it…Bess is our new lord and savior.
Enjoy a drink….or 10. You deserve it. Job well done sir.

carney, ive been a critic of yours in the past, and a month ago would have cheered your departure. but after last weekend and indeed this work week, i actually find myself hating to see you go. good job ole boy

  126. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 7:41 PM

did you get lucky with Bess?

  127. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 7:47 PM

John, what you wrote here was news-breaking, insightful and irreverent. Hope your new job doesn’t interfere with your best qualities.

  128. Posted by arthurcutten | September 19, 2008 at 7:57 PM

The new surprise writer is going to be Bess’ boss?
What’s the over/under on how long before she kills and eats him?
Anyone know what Ben and Hank told the Senators that made them wet themselves in fear? *Serious shit.*
Dodd and others keep dropping little tidbits, but that’s the same kind of shit that Tim Russert used to say about his *seriously scary* private briefings with Cheney and W about Saddam and look where it got him.

  129. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 7:59 PM

only to discover that your beloved instructor left you with a sub?
Well, that’s pretty much what happens with EP’s posts. The headline teases and you are always let down.
Glad to hear that EP has a full-time higher paying gig. Give us a hungry writer that can kick ass!

OH, here’s the scary stuff. figures it would come from some upstart like the NYT now that Carney is out of commission and Bess is busy doing body shots at Joe’s American Bar & Grill.
Ben and Hank Scare the congress Shitless
    NY Times. Must be true.
    don’t forget the duct tape.

  140. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 9:13 PM

JC – Thanks you did an amazing job over the last 2 weeks. You kicked every MSM mutt, and then some. I will miss you here but will read you there!
As for the IDIOTS who are doubting EP. You might want to do a bit of trolling on her actual resume (yes a her!!!). She is brillant, a player in private equity, and rumored to be the daughter of one of the biggest players (for the last 20 years) on Wall Street (think one of the initials in KKR). So i think she may have the contacts to be viable for this job.
Now i no boys don’t like change, but let there be no doubt she is up to the challenge of writing for this blog and then some.
Boys, perhaps the problem is some of her posts today were a bit intellectual for you? You don’t get her writing style, her wit, her sarcasm…? Perhaps she just needs to dumb them down a bit?
EP – thought your posts today were great. Thank you. Keep it up!!

  141. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 9:35 PM

@142 so what qualifies EP as a great writer according to you are:
    - She works in Private Equity (didn’t know they were all fabulous reporters)
    - Daughter of a rich/powerful man
Man, think I am all convinced. By that token Bess and Carney must have sucked. EP for Editor in Chief!

  142. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 9:43 PM

@142 — why do are you presuming that you know the gender of posters here. Last I looked, “guest” was gender-neutral.
For the record, I don’t give a crap about EP, who her daddy is or what contacts he has. Apparently, there are many people here (male and female) that don’t care for her style.

  143. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 9:49 PM

    @142 —
Ahh … your post makes perfect sense.
Anyone who uses “no” for “know” would obviously have orgasms over EP’s “brilliant” posts.
(note: “brilliant” was used sarcastically. The quotation marks were used to highlight this for your convenience as this site has no editing tools and there was wide concern it might otherwise have gone over your head or been otherwise misinterpreted).
Back to Yahoo boards for you.

  144. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 9:53 PM

    Paging Equity Private:
Care to comment on the headline (or should we suppose you take weekends off to play on Daddy’s yacht?)

Or do you only comment on private equity.
    Just asking.

  145. Posted by i love your cooking and you | September 19, 2008 at 9:58 PM

    @142- Equity Private blows.
She’s high brow…She’s an insider…She’s super articulate… But, she’s not right for DB. She’s an insider writing as an outsider (evidence the lack of posts breaking news) and perhaps funneling industry rumor/ info to the rest of the DB writing staff for them to write about. This presents Equity Privates’s posts as a compromise from DB to an attention hungry, wannabe sensation. If Equity Private is to stay, then perhaps her posts could aim to be somehting more than simply counter programming to stuff from Bess.

  146. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 10:03 PM

    JC,
    Best to you.
It has been wonderful fun with you in these tough times
May God bless your good heart
    AMEN
PS : Bess needs to pick up a bit…

  147. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 10:13 PM

    @142 –
Your argument re PE makes about as much sense (less, actually) than Sarah Palin being an expert on Iraq because her son was just deployed there.
My father’s a surgeon and lives outside of DC. Maybe I will be named the next Surgeon General.

  148. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 10:26 PM

EP needs to disclose her name and identity. Carney was legit because we knew who HE WAS/IS. She lacks that with a coy name and cryptic bio. Readers won’t buy in otherwise.
Bess, a pic of you would help too, seriously. Nothing crazy just something to give us a frame of reference.

  153. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 10:39 PM

    @ 143, 144
Some of the negative comments were questioning her competence, experience, and contacts. I was merely pointing out that she has all three in spades.
Her writing style is different that JC and BL but that in and of itself does not make it sub par. Give her (and you) some time to adjust and get used to her style. And if you still don’t like her style than don’t read her posts.
By the way she has had her own blog for for 2 1/2 years. It is widely read and appaulded by people inside the industry.

Carney — this is like a bad wake. And I wish we would wake up on Monday and find out that you were playing a cruel hoax on us kids.
You absolutely rock and your coverage the past 2 weeks was top notch, and dare I say, provided a certain amount of comfort.
I can’t imagine too many people that would have gone the extra yards that you did knowing that you were leaving.
Hope you come visit us here on the boards and maybe even guest comment. Be sure to put your new site on FB so we can find it.

  155. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 10:43 PM

@155 go ask Elie Mystal over ATL about how people are adjusting to him…
Lets forget about EP here…this is Carney’s post.

  156. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 10:44 PM

    @155
Clicked on your link for EP’s blog: 404 error not found. Could we make that the permanent status for EP here as well?
And btw, how does dealbreaker pay it’s staff you suppose? Good advice in asking readers to leave if they don’t like EP’s posts – you are not even fit for yahoo blogs. You can leave now.

  157. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 10:59 PM

    @ 145
I realized I made that error as soon as I has posted.
In my defense I have not had more than 3 hours (per night) of sleep since last saturday.
But you are right (write) that error is complete “amateur hour” bull shit.
If I was allowed to, I would short myself at this point.
As for my post, regardless of whether or not you like her writing style, she is qualified for this gig.

  158. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 11:09 PM

sucks to see you go but good luck. Always brought a bit of the “fu@k you” I needed to my day

  159. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 11:23 PM

@155, with due respect, EP has been around here for quite some time (sorry I can’t track it back, but it’s been at least since Spring). I used to think she was a fill-in for Carney or someone that they were grooming.
I don’t think people are questioning EP’s competence, experience, or even her contacts, but rather the “elitist persona” she has created for herself and even the forced familiarity that she imposes on her readers.
Bess and John took the time to develop rapport with readers and established their credibility. As a result, over time they have been able to take certain liberties with us (god forbid, even with Mayo and ShamWow! comments) because we are all part of the same inside joke and have shared the highs and lows of our industry.
I think what doesn’t work for EP (as accomplished as she may be) is that she has not taken the time to establish her credibility with readers and in turn, that has affected her ability to connect and establish her rapport. This makes her come across as an outsider, and even elitist.
In a sense, she’s like the new co-worker who may have all the credentials but tries too hard to fit in and ends up only alienating everyone.
It all just feels very forced and I hope Bess is up to shouldering DB. Don’t get me wrong — Bess Rocks!! But John has left very big shoes to fill.
Until now, I think people tolerated EP and her posts gave Bess and JC a chance to take a breather. But I am not looking forward to seeing her posts on a more frequent basis.

  162. Posted by guest | September 19, 2008 at 11:48 PM

@159 — don’t beat yourself up re the typo. I don’t think any of us has had much sleep this week.
Just not sure why you are crusading for EP. Sounds like she is accomplished, but DB may not be the right fit for her talents.
And as @158 pointed out, advertisers are what pays DB’s bills.
Carney — why oh why have you left us?? I just cried in my Sham-WOW … and ya know, those buggers *are* absorbent.

@165– carney was a hack writer and a total douche as a person to boot. everyone knows bess is the draw of this site. it won’t be hard to replace the “serious” editor.

@169 — you are the dumb fuck. Why don’t you try reading the posts. Someone pointed out that EP (Equity Private) has another blog and on that blog, EP announced the fact that she she has been named interim editor in chief here at DB.
The blog entry and link is even pasted above (see @165) but clearly you are too much of a dumb ass to verify or read what is posted.
Still don’t believe it? Google “Equity Private” and it is the first or second hit. See the blog entry dated 9/18. Ignore her pirate-speak. It’s as retarded as her posts.
Whoever said it earlier, I concur. DB is doomed. Hopefully Bess won’t pack up on us too.

Good luck to Carney but this is sad. The lack of adult supervision could do DB in. No matter how funny, the other writer is a walking disaster (legality wise). She has already used IP addresses of folks to expose their workplace etc, which is in clear violation of the privacy policy and use of IP rules of Dead Horse Media. They need to get some adult in here soon.

very anti-climatic, your story of dealbreaker calling. “they offered me a job,I was unemployed living on a park bench, i took the job”
well, at least you wont be there to cock block me with Bess.

@187. Don’t be an asshole and you won’t get fucked.

JC, way to call peak financial news!
Your reporting in the past month has been great and you’re going out on the top of your game.
Maybe DB could bring back Muffie Benson-Perella ?

@186. TGFD, I don’t always like you. But for once, you and I are in complete agreement.
@179. Grow up, get off the blow, and stop fucking hitting the fucking button so many motherfucking times.

  196. Posted by guest | September 21, 2008 at 3:01 AM

ALl the best JC, you’ve really created something Sham-Wow! here with DB. Your coverage over the last month has been exemplary. It would be nice to have your reporting around until the empire has been rebuilt, but i’ll be checking in on the new forum. Try to drop in and make a guest appearance every once-in-awhile. You’ll be missed.

    @186.
179 + 3 = 182 no? Who can blame JC (not jesus, the other one) for moving on to another forum that’s “less-juvenile.”

  198. Posted by guest | September 21, 2008 at 6:53 AM

    @199–”less juvenile”
what a douche. get over yourself, JC.

  199. Posted by guest | September 21, 2008 at 10:48 AM

    too gone, didn’t read.

  200. Posted by guest | September 21, 2008 at 12:36 PM

If Carney were still here, he would have already commented on the possible breakdown of the Merrill/BofA deal.
Way to change perception, Equity Private (or maybe Daddy’s yacht doesn’t have internet service in these tough times)
    Amateur.
    interim editor-in-chief, indeed.
Bess should have been named, not you (though DB hasn’t reported this … you took the liberty of “announcing” on your other blog)
    Pretty classy (not)

  201. Posted by guest | September 21, 2008 at 12:42 PM

@202– stop being a whiney bitch. “if carney were here” wah wah wah. well he’s not, so get over it. and since db hasn’t said EP’s interim-e-i-c, she probably isn’t, just put it on her site.

  202. Posted by guest | September 21, 2008 at 1:14 PM

@203, get your head out of your ass and read the prior postings. @202 is far from the only reader on here that has issues with EP and her horrendous writing.

  203. Posted by guest | September 21, 2008 at 1:17 PM

@204– well suck it the fuck up or stop reading. simple as that. the whole “if carney were here bs” makes him/her sound like a 7 year old.

  204. Posted by guest | September 21, 2008 at 4:32 PM

    went out like a champ

  205. Posted by guest | September 21, 2008 at 7:20 PM

@205, honestly, if EP came to a sudden stop, you are the one who might need help extracting your head out of ass. Saying ‘If Carney was here’ is quite well justified after his coverage last weekend. Now, bugger off.

  206. Posted by guest | September 21, 2008 at 7:22 PM

@207– the fact that you can’t stop posting about how much you hate EP is quite telling.

  207. Posted by guest | September 21, 2008 at 7:41 PM

@208 what does your post say? Think it says precisely what @207 said. And no I’m not @202.

  208. Posted by guest | September 21, 2008 at 7:45 PM

@209– it says, if you feel the need to cry about ‘ep sucks!’ do it once. constantly coming back to say it over and over implies you have some sort of axe to grind with her.

JC, sad to see you go. best of luck!

Equity Private is one of the most intelligent, insightful, and knowledgeable bloggers out there. I had no idea DB was so full of people dumbfounded by words 3+ syllables who then, out of frustration with their own pitiful conprehension skills, scapegoat Equity Private’s “bad writing.” Get a dictionary or an education, losers.

It is almost ironic, how well John Carlos named this, his last official post at DB as E in C. We his eclecticism readers have some how turned his wake into a slobber knocker over EP.
Juan deserves better respect then this… the gang can agree to disagree on EP for the rest of her posting career here, this is however whats his names last official post…
A drink to the death of capitalism and Juan what ever his name was…

So long Carney. Goodbye and good luck. ES.

Carney, didn’t have a chance last week but congrats and good luck

  214. Posted by guest | September 22, 2008 at 10:30 AM

@212, didn’t realize you had taken up PR for EP to make ends meet. Guess it’s a step up from “would you like fries with that”.
I’ve seen no fewer than 20 posts here bashing the fit of EP’s writings here on DB and I can assure you, mine accounted for only 1 of those postings — rest assured there are a good number of readers here who are not happy with her style (nor timeliness of late).
I guess people were willing to overlook her shortcomings paired with the strength of Carney and Bess. Now we are stuck with it and she has annointed herself interim editor-in-chief on her outside blog.
She may have talent, but her feigned connection with the readers here is painfully obvious.
From a business model perspective, don’t forget, DB sustains itself by advertisers. A drop in readership will translate to a drop of revenues, no matter how may ShamWOWs!! people post. So, think before you tell people to go elsewhere. They probably will anyway, and there will be no one to blame but EP, from the deck of daddy’s yacht.

“The best readers in finance”…are the ones who never commented…much.
Carney got what we needed him to get out.
    Good work Carney. A service.
