You know what would go nicely with the week everyone (even GOLDMAN), at various points, got their faces ripped off? A gaudy, classless luxury car show to remind you of the toys you can probably no longer afford (though don't let that stop you). We didn't have the initiative to pull something like that together, but luckily someone else did. The Motorexpo started on Monday and has been going strong all week, over at the World Financial Center. And apparently on Tuesday the event planners held a "parade" from the Waldorf all the way down to the home of Merrill Lynch Bank of America, taking a detour to drive past Lehman Brothers, a sight we are deeply sorry to have missed. And even though most of you can only look and not touch, we figured everybody could use some JO&C material this afternoon. It's pretty dark and grainy, but then again, most second-rate porn is.

Listen up bitches there’s another shoe that will be dropping soon. Companies that recently filed Q2 and Q3 results showed a minimal markdown -if any- for the various toxic assets on their balance sheets. Auditors asked companies to mark to market these assets and a lot of companies pushed back and refused citing their banker, “this is only a temporary situation.” Other companies did lower the value of these assets but the banker provided the valuation they reported. Let me repeat that, the banker -most likely- provided the valuation that was reported on the latest Q. Lehman advised some clients that the asset should be marked down by 8%. Some of these assets were reported in previous Q’s as cash equivalent and have since been re-classed out of short-term. Those companies who reluctantly agreed to the auditor’s request included a silly footnote citing their banker, “We view these current market conditions to be temporary… blah blah blah”
Q3 and K’s are right around the corner and auditors will not take “no” for an answer this time and they will make sure these companies mark to market these toxic assets.
I wonder what the value of an asset is that’s not liquid and may be with a company that is or might file chapter 7/11.
Balance Sheet Pain Round 1 will go from November through March.
This will have a material impact on the silly little equations used in fundamental analysis: liquidity, activity, profitability, and solvency. One way or another.
