I don't really mind if various other publications feel the need to rip off Dealbreaker editors but it really frosts my cookies when they lift material from our readers without sourcing 'Guest.' Do we know for a fact that the lede of this story, which states that Rose City Archery will benefit from the tax break on wooden arrows included in the Patriot Act Bailout bill, was stolen from this comment? No, we don't know that for a fact. But it certainly seems suspicious.
Update: Perhaps we got it wrong? We're quick to j'accuse on behalf of DB readers.

Trivia: the Senators from Oregon who sponsored this earmark split their vote on the bailout. Wyden (D) voted No, Smith (R) voted Yes.

what's wrong with frosted cookies?

Um, Ryan Donmoyer here. The Bloomberg reporter on that story. I promise you this is just a weird coincidence. I didn't even know anything about this post until someone pointed it out to me this morning. Was reporting this myself yesterday at noon, filed by 2, had it on the wire before 4. I certainly didn't have time to sit around reading Dealbreaker and the comments.

What's really weird about that story is its emphasis on tax breaks, not the expensive new mental health provisions or the massive surtax on individuals making more than $500k a year (which seems like a lot to most people, but then in 1970 $30k a year was a big salary).

comment at 1:55pm and you filed by 2pm. more than enough time to write that garbage story

no talk of McCain "vetoing the first bill that comes across his desk as president with a single pork-barrel project", yet voting for the Bailout.
I am all for the bailout, don't get me wrong. What I am addimantly against however is hypocracy.

Was a proposed amendment. I don't think it made it.

More on the wooden arrows. Apparently, in 1934, the US Congress passed the Robinson-Pittman act at the request of the nations sport hunters and fishermen and women. The act attached an 11% tax on many items of hunting and fishing equipment. This money was collected by sellers of that merchandise and rebated to the various state wildlife agencies based on the number of hunting and fishing licenses they sold. The act has been collecting and rebating 11% taxes all those years now. There has been hundreds of millions of dollars collected and sent to state wildlife agencies. Without the tax, many state agencies would have been hard pressed to maintain any sort of wildlife protection. To say that it has been a success is an understatement. Many species of game have been successfully reintroduced into the woods because of hunter’s efforts and hunter’s dollars.
Since the toy wooden arrows are used for play and not to hunt, the government was wrong to tax them on it.
