Does anyone else think it overly dramatic to have scheduled the second Bailout Bill vote for “sundown?” Or is it just that the people running copy at CNN.com are morons?
As if that were not enough:

The legislation also includes a “Mental Health Parity” provision, which would require health insurance companies to cover mental illness at parity with physical illness.

They are kidding, right? No.
I weep for the future.

the dumbasses can’t just vote on a bailout bill – they lard the thing up with all these ridiculous riders. I would imagine when (if?) the thing passes, and it is read in its entirety we can expect to find some Homeland Security money for Des Moines, maybe a subsidy for beet farmers, etc.

One day a Ron Paul-style loony will sneak in a rider that says “Also, all functions of government are abolished” and the whole thing will be over.

Did any of these idiots, especially Paulson, notice that the market was up yesterday? Oh, that’s right I’m sorry, I forgot that was in anticipation of a “new and improved” bailout bill being passed. How stupid of me.

I believe the Jewish holiday ends at sun-down – that could have something to do with the timing..

I guess we now know for sure that EP is not a member of the Tribe. (Either that, or she is laying down yet more smokescreen.)

    Where do I begin?
#1 – if the Jewish holiday ends at sundown, and they’re voting at sundown, when have all the Jews had a chance to read the legislation? Oh, that’s right – nobody reads it. They just vote on it.
#2 – This entire Bill has become a fucking joke. The market has at least another 10% on the downside, maybe more. If the last 2 weeks have shown us anything, it’s that we are in the hands of a band of idiots.
    #3 – EP doesn’t exist. She’s a figment of Bess’ imagination.

Oh, this “rescue” stuff is so confusing. Let’s load this bill up with pet add-ons that we’re more comfortable with. Plus, voting after dark makes it easier to slip away…

“Let’s load this bill up with pet add-ons”
That’s why it’s called the Christmas Tree bill. You can thank the Democrats for these goodies — no bill is ever so vital that they can’t add at least 25% to the cost with pork for their political allies.
And to think that those mean Republicans wanted to get rid of not only the Christmas presents, but the tree itself — and the good little boys and girls of Wall St. have been waiting so patiently (greedily) for their 700 Billion.
Hey wait, I thought that the GOP were the lap dogs of the Wall St. financial robber barons…..

Constitutionally, a spending bill is required to originate in the House. In order for the Senate to go first, they had to find a bill that had passed the House but not the Senate, and amend it to include the bailout. The mental health parity provision is that bill, and the bailout is actually the “pet add-on”.

  26. Posted by guest | October 1, 2008 at 10:10 AM

    #25, right on.
But if/when bill passes, back to House-Senate Conference Committee and then both houses must adopt the changes. Doubt anything will be on POTUS desk until the weekend.

  27. Posted by guest | October 1, 2008 at 10:16 AM

    #25, exactly.
I’m glad someone paid attention in civics class. As fun as it is to poke fun at the Senate, in this case they’re actually trying to help.
Although it may be unpalatable to see the “Patriot Rescue Act” attached to some random other provisions, this is the only way the Senate can legally shame the House into action…

If the bill they’re taking up is HR 6049, interestingly, McCain and Biden voted AGAINST it and Obamanation was a No Vote.

@20 Your article fails to mention that in many poor neighborhoods there are few to no banks because the banks redlined the neighborhood as too poor to be a good risk. So folks have to live with a system of check cashing places, pawn shops, pay day loans, rent to own, etc. These folks are paying triple the interest rate for basic banking services that are given out free or at a much lower interest rate. The folks who have good credit have to pay higher interest rate simply because they are poor. The pooor feel no need to bail out the Wall Street bankers who have already made obscene (what used to be called immoral usury) profits. If the credit markets seize up, so what? For most of them, they weren’t getting credit anyway or the credit came at a price that was way too high.

  30. Posted by guest | October 1, 2008 at 11:45 AM

29: By definition, poor people don’t have good credit.
Okay, that’s too harsh. Lots of poor people pay their bills on time and (for obvious reasons) have low debt-to-income ratios. But the fact that you’ve never missed a payment on your $300 Sears card balance is not going to be the primary consideration on whether to loan you a few hundred grand from this point forward.
Ironically, if it had been in the past, we might not be in quite such a mess, but we’re going to go from “Pulse rate above zero? Paper signed? Okay, back up your ’86 station wagon to the side door and we’ll fill it up with twenties” to “You know that joke about banks only lending to people who neither need nor want money? Yeah. That’s not a joke.”
Anyway, even in poor neighborhoods most people either own a car or know someone who does. I used to do some volunteer work in North Lawndale on the south side of Chicago. (The fellow I was helping was a priest whose only vanity was that there were three contracts out on his life. He considered this proof he was doing something right.) I can tell you from personal experience that you can drive from there to an area with any financial service you care to name in ten minutes. The problem isn’t access, it’s failure to access, either through laziness or ignorance.
