Bloomberg reports that Representative Barney Frank (D-MA) has called for a freeze on Wall Street bonuses, at "all firms," and not just those relying on the kindness of Bald and Bearded strangers. "There should be a moratorium on bonuses," Frank said yesterday. "They have a negative incentive effect because they are the ones that say if you take a risk and it pays off you get a big bonus...and if it causes losses...you don't lose anything." He's, right, you know. I mean, yeah, it was really only higher ups who perpetrated the monumental fuck ups we're currently paying for, including but not limited to the barbershop quartet of, say, Dick Fuld, Stan O'Neal, Chuck Prince, and Jimmy Cayne (with back up dancers Angelo Mozilo, Alan Greenspan et al.), but surely something will come of cutting the annual take-home of low-level plebes who were minding their own business placing Seamless Web orders while their boss's boss's boss's boss's boss was investing in that can't miss asset class, subprime.
The only thing is, we're not sure Barns has gone far enough. No bonuses for anyone, yes. But that's like trying to put out a forest fire with a bottle (essentially) non-alcoholic MHL. We need more power. Off the top of our heads we're thinking a moratorium that included keyboards, desk chairs, and bathroom passes would make this thing that much more effective. Only when those fuck-sticks learn the value of being allowed to relieve themselves whenever they want will we turn this culture of greed around.

"moratorium" or "freeze"? a freeze at last year's levels would be a godsend...
seriously, they need to know how investment banking works. no one would work on wall st for the paltry salary. even some toll collectors (if you include overtime) make more than some md's base.

Frankfurter has his head up his a$$, of course. But I work on the buy side for that base, with no prospect of bonus for quite some time if at all, and absolutely no bennies. I count myself lucky to have a job just now - between my wife and I, we can cover the too-big mortgage and necessities. Need to change your way of thinking people - I've had it driven home to me. Not a lot of options out there when you are cut loose in an environment like this.

"House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank said there should be a freeze on Wall Street bonuses until companies find a way to keep the year-end payouts from encouraging excessive risk-taking."
I've got an idea to discourage excessive risk-taking. How about you let companies that take excessive risk go bankrupt if their wagers don't pan out? If companies go bankrupt, the employees lose their jobs, and management watches their net worth nose dive. This should serve as an effective disincentive to take large risks. Perhaps Mr. Frank should have thought about that before helping to jam a couple trillion dollars down the throats of insolvent businesses.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 1:24PM
Congress should also have a moratorium on their own raises (which THEY get to decide with their own votes!).
We should have their raises and salaries tied to the budget. That'll get us a balanced budget quickly.
Deficit = pay cut. Surplus = raise.

@1:
What are you doing on the internet on shemini atzeres?
Posted by blndebnker , Oct 22, 2008 1:31PM
@cluzo - I don't know if I would call the salaries paltry. Obviously the big money payouts come bonus time are the real incentive but I'm guessing my MD's salary is about $200-250K. If there is honestly a toll-taker spot that pays that much, I am in the wrong industry.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 1:31PM
@ 9 - what shop are you at where an MD's salary is less than a toll collector? 250k a year for a toll collector? im in the wrong industry

“It’s absolutely a conflict,” said Dan Gainor, vice president of the Business & Media Institute. “He was voting on Fannie Mae at a time when he was involved with a Fannie Mae executive. How is that not germane?
“If this had been his ex-wife and he was Republican, I would bet every penny I have - or at least what’s not in the stock market - that this would be considered germane,” added Gainor, a T. Boone Pickens Fellow. “But everybody wants to avoid it because he’s gay. It’s the quintessential double standard.”

young md salary = $175 - $200k. toll collectors near retirement work overtime in the last two years to lock in pension benefits based on their total take home (~$150k - $175k). nj is raising taxes to pay for this little trick that has been kept secret for years. while I don't live in nj, I have to pay that stupid toll that continues to rise despite the recession we're in...

Isn't Barney Frank the guy whose boyfriend was running a gay prostitution ring out of his D.C. townhouse, but Frank said he "didn't know about it"?
I guess the guy can never tell when there's an ass right in front of his face. Why he is given control over any sort of finance-related activity is beyond me.
"In August 1989, Stephen Gobie reportedly told The Washington Times that he ran a prostitution ring out of Frank's Washington, D.C., apartment and that Frank was aware of his operation. While Frank admitted to paying Gobie for sex several years earlier and to later hiring Gobie as an assistant, Frank denied any knowledge that Gobie allegedly ran a prostitution ring out of Frank's apartment. Frank maintained that he fired Gobie upon being told by one of his landlords that Gobie was using his residence for his prostitution business."

10 years ago the toll collectors pulled down almost $100k with overtime (daily record 2-22-99). Add 10 years of inflation and the generous pension benefits that are keyed off the last years' compensation and aren't in the $100k and Cluzo's numbers aren't unreasonable. And of course, those pension benefits are constitutionally guaranteed.

Also, lest I remind you the overwhelming majority of this country is white; meaning, the overwhelming majority of plebes are white...further meaning the overwhelming majority of welfare checks are being distributed to whites. If you want to see true plebes, take a trip to Appalachia. It'll blow your mind how disgustingly poor our "awesome, hard-working" fellow white folk are.
In other news, Barney Frank's ignorance is almost as blatant as those who previously posted on this topic.

@blndebnker - I answered your question. apparently, some people are threatened by the fact that a union worker could make $150k (inclusive of overtime). but if you do the math 60hrs a week:
$45.00 hr x 40 = $1,800
$67.50 hr (time 1/2) x 20 = $1,350
$3,150 per week x 50 weeks = $157,500 per year.
that doesn't include working holidays which is 2.0x+ hourly vs 1.5x for regular overtime...someone want to call a 20 year toll worker and ask if $45 an hour is high?

not to ignite anymore debate since i don't have the stats in front of me, but your logic is wrong. You have to look at it as a % of the population. i.e. what % of white folks and what % of black (or minority in general) folks live below the poverty line.
Like i said, i don't know what the answer is, but try to use correct logic when making your points, thanks.

A ten kiloton blast would only reach Harford, maybe Providence. And that is only if you have a weaponized trigger with a fission component to detonate the fusion process.
Levin, what's with the Matt Damon quotes?... anymore Departed or are we going back to GWH?

@103,
Actually, simple reading comprehension would benefit this situation. As you can see, I'm talking specifically about Harlem, as the previous posters were insinuating the neighborhood to be chock full of dependent, lazy people.
On the other hand, if you want to talk Canarsie, Bushwick, South Bronx, etc., I think my argument would've been crafted a bit differently. I'm not some pandering white guy from Gawker. I just think this particular page has been riddled with ignorant people making huge assumptions that are wildly inaccurate and nauseating. The "black" argument is simply a tiring, boring rally cry from bum-fuck middle America (like that generalization?).

Lets stop pretending the problem with the country is the Democratic party that sells the ignorant that they can get something for nothing

approx 10% of whites and 25% of blacks.
I don't understand the point of using race demographics. On absolute terms, there are still more white people living in poverty than black people.

118 Except that its the coasts, plus a few enlightened places in the middle that are blue. And those are also the places with the highest incomes, best schools. Unfortunately (for us blue state people, including NJ) they also generate the most tax revenue, a lot of which is redistributed to the red states. Including Alaska. You red staters have a lot of nerve complaining.

@115 Amen brother... I've said it before on another thread - Capitol Hill is a bunch of twenty-something year old staffers running around like chickens without heads feeding information to their bosses so that those bosses can fly by the seat of their pants in a hearing. The percentage of anyone on the Hill who has financial literacy or who can explain basic financial concepts is very close to zero... a staffer's job is to maneuver from staff to staff progressively getting better jobs to build the resume with Big Names in the hopes that when Congressman Big Name gets tapped for a powerful committee or a big ticket, you get brought along.
So when something big happens, they consult Investopedia. Oy vey...

If I got no bonus at all, I'd likely default on my house payments. Oh the irony, Barney.
Although I do follow the perverse logic here, the thing about bonuses is that you can cut them the fuck off when you write-down 18 billion dollars of goodwill, unlike salary. Cause you don't think that motherfuckers are just going to accept their 150k base?

Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 3:31PM
As someone that works in Finance, seeing idiotic statements like that Frank's are painful. That said, if push comes to shove IBs can take the 30bn+ they have already allocated to comp expense, and pay back the 10-20bn checks from the government (which they were mandated to take). Actually not a bad idea politically, and this is a very easy year to pay people down. Only drawback being, the banks that can't afford this are exposed, and go back under pressure, and the whole system is destabalized again (nice one Barney). That said, I'd rather they just pay me more comp in salary- NY taxes the hell out of bonus anyway.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 3:31PM

ok, we got your point back @160.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 3:58PM
151 I would agree that the majority of those living in blue states do not attend elite schools. As to where the people that do attend are from, I havent a clue. I would say however that its a good bet that when they graduate they wind up in blue states, cause thats where the good jobs are. As to your point on blue state people not paying the most taxes: you are totally wrong there. Its well documented that they do and in fact those revenues are widely redistributed to the red states.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 4:04PM
@167
The point is that the majority of people living in the blue states do not pay the majority of taxes.
Instead, a (quite) small percentage of the blue state people enjoys very well paid jobs and pays lots in taxes. The rest of the blue-state population is shit out of luck.
The small percentage of very wealthy people living in the blue states votes republican.

168 So you think its the few at the top that drives the median income in NY, NJ, CT, MD, CA into the top decile? Thats just plain wrong. And the "rest of them are SOOL" comment is laughable. You need to get out more.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 4:25PM
@168
dos'nt know difference between median and average yet allowed to vote
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 4:26PM
@173
Give me a break; this is eco and polisci, both 101.
A simple example:
Granted, maids in Connecticut get paid more that maids in Alabama, and for two reasons: a) there is a higher demand for maids in Connecticut than there is in Alabama, and b) the folks that employ maids pay high taxes (well, maids do too).
Betcha that most folks with servants vote repulican.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 4:27PM
174 Actually, sounds like hes been voting R. Probably in Staten Island.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 4:34PM
@174 - 176
Actually, I live in Harlem and support Obama. So go fuck yourself, and yes, I have a right to vote and will use it to get rid of folks like you three.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 4:34PM
175 This is simple: median and average are not the same thing. A handful of billionaires in CT or NJ dont drive the median wage up to first and second in the US. Its the general prosperity in those places, which is the result of smart people, good jobs. That in turn results in more taxes which are then redistribted to the red states. And then, instead of saying thank you, the red state voter would have you believe that hes the real American. Its laughable. Or maybe just dumb. Like you.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 4:39PM
@178
Clearly, you have no idea what domestic help costs in CT, and given your reasoning capacity, will never have an opportunity to find out. The fact is that an experienced domestic servant grosses (in median terms, if you please) about twice what a factory worker grosses in the middle of the country.
Obviously the median income in Connecticut will be higher than elsewhere.
What you are missing is that the servant's employer grosses 10,000 times what the servant gets paid.
The servant votes Dem and the master votes McCain/Palin.
OK?
Now go fuck yourself.

@177...How does Barneys frank taste?
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 4:42PM
@178
Who do you think creates "good jobs" that "result" in "prosperity in those places" where ungrateful little pricks like you then have freedom to vote for socialists?
Not socialists.
Republicans do, you moron.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 4:44PM
@ 178 get a clue- Take a look at Jersey. An extremely small number of huge tax payers, individual tax payers, make up a very disproportionate percentage of total state revenue.
Call Corzine and ask him how worried he is. No joke, you've got guys cutting checks in the tens of millions every year. If a good percentage of them leave, or have no income, the state is very much in trouble.
When you have a heavily progressive tax system & your top milk cows get shot, your bottom 50 isn't there to pick up the slack. It's an income tax. No income, no tax.
http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/income/statemedfaminc.html
Other than the Jerz & CT nothing too special about the northeast.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 4:49PM
179 Actually, the choice of Palin, who's basically an empty headed fool, as a running mate precluded McCain from being a reasonable choice. I doubt that anyone with half a brain would even consider him.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 4:51PM
@183
You are quite mistaken.
Palin is a very intelligent woman, and many people would love to see her become President.
For one, she's way more qualified than any socialists in the running.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 4:54PM
@176
Now you can plainly see what the problem is.. democrats know their constituents are dumber than a bag full of rocks.. promise them utopia .. and like little empty headed idiots they vote for them.. not realizing that in the end .. Obams anfd Frank live off them .. and it goes deep into their ends.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 4:58PM
182 From NY, NJ and CT, where are they gonna go? Florida? Its a long commute from there to a good job on Wall Street.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 4:59PM
184 Yeah, she looked quite intelligent in the Couric interview and the debate. She shocked me in fact with her command of the issues.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 5:03PM
@187
How many times can you wave this Couric interview?
Since then, Palin gave a substantial number of pretty brilliant interviews. And, she has content! And she is hot! And, most importantly, she is pro-business.
I think the choice here is clear.
If you like socialism, why don't you go say 'da' to Putin?
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 5:06PM
Palin is not a very intelligent woman. Her mind is completely ordinary and uninformed. Only a small handful of people would like to see her Vice-President, and even fewer would like to see her President.
I cannot believe the number of people picking on Cluzo and interjecting racism and homophobia into this thread.
It's pretty despicable.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 5:07PM
@186:
You are the Obama voter personified: a moron who believes that jobs grow on Wall Street themselves, and that people live in the tri-state area because it's more convenient for them to come and pick the Wall St jobs!
JOBS ARE CREATED BY BUSINESS-MINDED PEOPLE.
And you asshole and all of your Obama-wielding colleagues are dumbasses who cannot see that.
Vote McCain/Palin.

Palin is a brilliant woman.
And you, go back to your stove and to shining my shoes. Yes, all at the same time.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 5:12PM
This is like bizarro land here.
190 Have you ever looked at job creation over the past 8 (R) years? The nation is hemorageing (sp?) jobs.
188 Where are these brilliant interviews? Reality is that Palin has been totally shielded from the press and limits her exposure to sympathetic audiences. Made up largely of angry, disaffected males who seem for some reason to eat up the pablum she feeds them.
Posted by guest , Oct 22, 2008 5:14PM
191 Yeah and a lot of minimum wage jobs to pay for it with. If you can get one in competition with a new retiree, looking for something other than golf of knitting to pass the time with.
