Joe

We are totally, utterly tired of this utterly interminable election. But such things are in the eye of the street. We have tried to pay no attention, but then... "Joe the Plumber."

Republican John McCain continued to invoke the Ohio man, known now as Joe the Plumber, to charge that Democrat Barack Obama would raise taxes on American workers. Obama countered that his plan would cut taxes for the Toledo-area plumber while McCain's proposals favor the wealthiest Americans.

``Thanks to him, we've finally learned what Senator Obama's economic goal is. As he told Joe, Barack Obama wants to, quote, `spread the wealth around,''' McCain said in New Hampshire, referring to Samuel J. Wurzelbacher, who questioned Obama about his tax plan while the candidate was touring his neighborhood.

If you haven't heard of Joe the Plumber, please lend us the sleeping pills you've been using. We'd like to coast through the next many days before the election in a narcotic haze.

At a rally in Richmond, Virginia, Obama responded by saying, McCain ``isn't fighting for Joe the Plumber; he's fighting for Joe the Hedge-Fund Manager.''

At first we were puzzled, but then it occurred to us: It's the same Joe. And this has the virtue of explaining much of September's (non)performance.

Joe the Plumber is a bullshit artist anyway so he'd make a good hedge fund manager.

so-so setup, fantastic punchline.

Black-Carter's presidency will save the republican party. Too bad for McCain who will have to watch it from a nursing home, but it could finally get Forbes elected.

1000 years ago, Joe the Plumber would have been Joe the Hedge Fund Manager's slave, so JTP should simply be happy he's allowed to decide if he wants to go to work each morning.

He's a real person? I thought that Joe the Plumber was part of the Bob the Builder cast and this was some sort of metaphor the proles could understand.

I have a brother in law whos a plumber. With a degree in biology, but still a plumber. And he makes a ton of money. When residential construction is heating up he leases a few extra trucks and staffs them up, with a licensed plumber plus a few mexicans and sends them out. When things contract, he terminates the leases and the mexicans and works on his own. And its low stress. Think about it.

Yesterday I read a great article which said that the $250 limit isn't set in stone because it can't be. The author said that the limit would gradually get lower as the government bills get higher. Guy made a very logical argument. One everyone realizes but doesn't want to accept.

10

Wondering lately if there will be anyone left making over $250 grand.

BHO is so full of shit it is infuriating. He bashes the Street and Hedge funds, while at the same time he gleefully seeks and accepts campaign donations from the same people he demonizes. Funny how it looks like Jim, George, and Ken the hedge fund managers are being protected by the Dems. Wonder why?

From the MotherJones Blog:
Oversight of Hedge Funds/Top Dem Donors Postponed Until After Election

On Friday, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee announced that a hearing scheduled for Thursday, October 16 on the role of hedge funds in the current financial crisis would be postponed until after the election. The committee, chaired by Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), says the postponement is to "accommodate the schedules of witnesses." Fine. But several of the hedge fund execs asked to testify at the hearing are big Dem donors who the party might not want to embarrass before the election. And by big Dem donors, I mean BIG Dem donors. Here are the numbers for the 2008 election cycle (excluding 527 contributions):

* John A. Paulson, President, Paulson & Co., Inc: $86,974, $43,400 of that to Democrats
* George Soros, Chairman, Soros Fund Management, LLC : $111,190, $110,150 of that to Democrats
* Philip A. Falcone, Senior Managing Director, Harbinger Capital Partners: $0
* James Simons, President, Renaissance Technologies, LLC: $117,050, $105,050 of it to Democrats (only $2,000 to Republicans—the rest went to a PAC.
* Kenneth C. Griffin, Chief Executive Officer and President, Citadel Investment Group: $70,100, $60,750 of it to Democrats

That's $385,314 worth of 2008 election cycle donations from five witnesses (one of whom didn't give anything). $319,350 of it, or 82.9 percent, went to Democrats.

BHO lies so loudly and so negatively about anything he wants and we're still waiting for the media to call him on it....tumbleweeds....hell, even CNN called out his lies on his association with Ayers. Media-silence on his Rezko connections and quid pro quo. Etc.

After his previous tax plans of raising taxes on everyone making over $42k, now he promised to cut taxes on anyone under $250k, while also promising a *reduction* in spending, free health care and free college education for all. I wonder which of the two plans he'll implement?

The McCain campaign was not amused but it was ready. Quoting the nonpartisan Opensecrets.org, campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds made note that Obama reaped $1,026,497 million from Joe and Josephina the hedge fund managers this cycle, i.e. – the hedge fund industry. McCain has taken in $573,150. As for chief executive officers, Obama’s Joe the CEO jab came a day after Eric Schmidt the CEO of Google made his political debut at an Obama economic summit in Palm Beach County, Fla.

“Not only was he meeting with rich CEOs yesterday, it’s Barack Obama who has taken more campaign cash from ‘Joe Hedge Fund’ than any other candidate. Barack Obama has taken more money from Big Oil, more money from Big Pharma, and more money from Wall Street than John McCain, and if he wins this election Obama is going to take more money from you,” Bounds said.

16

McCain can't even get money from the people for which he'll continue to lower taxes... loser

17

Miami, et all - Look at the scoreboard, stop bitching, and get ready for a new sheriff in town. Just remember what Goolsbee told the Canadians: "This is all political bullshit to get elected." After all, Barack Obama's big backers are Wall Street and Hedge Fund guys. I doubt he would be that big a foe to the Street. And also remember that with the deficit headed to a trillion dollars, the likelihood of taxes not rising at some point in the future would be pretty low even if McCain was going to win.

18

Posted by strangebrew , Oct 23, 2008 10:52AM

17. The end justifies the means eh? Where have I heard that before. Anything to accomplish the marxist agenda is ok. Nothing in Obama's past indicates that he doesn't intend to follow through with what he is saying, no matter how disastrous for the economy it would be.

Barry isn't even talking about raising taxes to balance the budget or fix our entitlement programs. That would make tax hikes easier to swallow. Instead he is proposing massive new entitlements and transfering tax revenues to people who pay no federal income taxes. How is that going to balance the budget?

How bout all the incorrect and make beleive shit he said during the VP debate? Funny how the media has been dead quiet about that.

Brilliant Joe thinks its patriotic to pay more taxes and spread the wealth. Joe isn't such a big fan of spreading his own $ though. Check out his charitable donations.

Let's set the record straight. Sara Palin is one shade above being mentally retarded. All you have to do is watch her interview with Couric. I give Couric, who I find abhorrent, a lot credit for restraining herself from either puking out of sheer horror or falling off the chair laughing during that interview.

There is just no debate here on this matter. Period.

34 et al. And also see the Peggy Noonan column in last saturday's WSJ. She seconds the motion in a very effective manner re Palin's lack of qualifications. So good in fact that I'm surprised it didn't get her fired.

38

Posted by guest , Oct 23, 2008 12:25PM

Peggy Noonan, one might guess is one of those conservatives who thinks BO will have one term, barring impeachment, and she then feels a better more conservative republican party will emerge and thrive. She is misguided. She has yet to see that many voters have no party affiliation whatsoever.

I generally appreciate Peggy Noonan's thoughtfulness. I may not always agree with her but I respect her. That being said, the entire column, sounds to me, an independent, like a tantrum. I began drawing parallels to the kind of rants I am reading on the ultra socialist liberal sites and, sadly, the parallels are there. Suffice it to say, more and more Americans are becoming Independents and refusing party identity. The reason for this is simple, none of the parties speak to where we are in our thinking, where we are as a nation. We see that the solution, if there is one, lies more in the gray areas than in the hard and fast black lines.

Peggy is reacting to Sarah Palin like many women. However, there are many of us with whom she strikes a chord. So what if she doesn't have an Ivy League Undergraduate Degree and an Ivy League Law or Business Degree to match. The people who hold those degrees, for the most part, have gotten us to where we are today. Many "regular Americans" look at these people in search of the common sense with which they guide their lives. Someone had a very good line "Sarah hasn't had the common sense educated out of her". If you are honest, you realize this is the truth. You need only look at Sarah Palin and know she is the right person at the right time. You need only see how she has lived her life, raised her children. Sarah's life is an open book, sorry that Peggy did not choose to read it. Essentially, every woman in America who is a mother knows very well who Sarah Palin is, regardless of whether or not she is living up to the tenets of conservatism or republicanism. That is Sarah's strength. Miss Noonan would do well to think.

44

Joe the plumber is a living metaphor for all of us.

45

Agree 100%

I have as Ivy League education as one can have x3, and certainly consider myself an intellectual; yet I believe that Sarah Palin is not only a viable candidate, she is a great politician with sound reasoning and principles that will be great for this country.

Also, Sarah's presence highlights all Obama's deficiencies: he's really just an empty suit, while Palin is an experienced leader that got where she is through hard work.

46

Posted by guest , Oct 23, 2008 1:28PM

I think 43 and 45 are out of their minds. Or more likely, sent here to cut and paste by the RNC. Especially 43. Noonan's column was thoughtful and supported by facts. This is a weak attempt to discredit it.

Check out the series of editorials that IBD has been running. Amazingly, (no so much) the mainstream media is less interested in Senator Obama having spent the majority of his life nursing at the tits of a wide ranging variety of assorted pinkos, radicalists, and even communists. Hard to believe CNN (the Communist News Network)

Seriously, check out the link. I hadn't hear about a third of this infomration until I began reading and then fact checking some of these editorials.

48

Posted by Headless Horseman , Oct 23, 2008 1:39PM

I've read of few of the other editorials in the series, and taken as a whole, it's a pretty damning portrayal of Senator Obama's background and experiences. In consideration of some of his rhetoric and recent policy proposals, it's almost hard to believe that the mainstream media hasn't jumped on his long-standing ties to all these different pinkos, radicals, and even out-and-out communists. If the Republican Party offered a white candidate with a similar background he would have been dismissed as a communist before being convicted as a traitor by the media outlets that are tripping over each other for a chance to "interview" Senator Obama. The democratic congress would commence special investigations. Keith Olberman's head would explode.

Cindy McCain's past abuse of pain killers, on the other hand, is held to be an accurate barometer of her husband's potential as President. The number of houses Senator McCain owns is "newspaper" fodder for weeks. Yet the same media outlets that devoted hundreds of hours to those "stories" turn a blind eye on Obama having spent a good portion of his life positioning himself as the meat in a Marx & Bolshevik sandwich. Apparently, a candidate's social views, economic philosophy, and foreign policy positions (or lack thereof) simply aren't as relevant as the frequency and quantity with which his wife may have taken certain prescriptions some number of years ago. I’m glad that the major media outlets have taken it upon themselves to make that decision on my behalf.

The same media that spills tanker ships of ink over how little we know about Governor Palin is remarkably uninterested in Senator Obama's own history and background. This is true even in spite of their comparative positions on their respective parties' tickets. Senator Obama displays an almost religious aversion from making public references to his father. He touts himself as a community organizer...and the media isn't even the least bit curious as to what he was organizing for or against. It’s actually quite considerate that media has chosen not to risk upsetting me with the details of Senator Obama’s apparent infatuation with socialist and communist ideals.

In addition to the blows currently being struck against freedom and capitalism, one of the unsung travesties is the near extinction of reliable and unbiased news reporting. As the news continues it's shift to a highly fragmented, available on-demand format (first with 24 hour "news" channels such as CNN, then with internet sites such as "The Drudge Report" and "Politico" with streaming video, and most recently through real-time blogs) the quality and reliability of the information presented continues to deteriorate in favor of highly stylized productions targeted to specific demographics. As consumers of news have been presented with more choices, they've become more selective. Unfortunately, this selectivity manifests itself in the form of the electorate seeking out new sources that espouse views already consistent with their own beliefs. The media, driven by the strong correlation between the size of a production's audience and the ad revenue able to be generated by that production, has been more than willing to pander for viewers.

Television stations and newspapers no longer attempt to maintain even a facade of impartiality having instead adopted tabloid-quality coverage of all things political. The media has become almost rabid in its unprecedented, unrelenting persecution of all things republican. Unfortunately, the electorate has become so desensitized to the onslaught of half-baked, one-sided, and outright disrespectful media indictments of the current administration that have come to pass for journalism in this country that it has now become socially acceptable for Oliver Stone (and Hollywood) to release a movie that openly and unapologetically mocks this country's sitting President. At the same time, Barney Frank, Chairman of the House FSC (who's been previously reprimanded by the House Ethics Committee for his "relationship" with a male prostitute that Frank had hired and later befriended allowing him to run an escort service from his apartment) is calling for Wall Street to institute a moratorium on bonuses.

I'm afraid we haven't yet seen the high watermark of the socialistic sentiment gripping our country. Between the entitlement mindset inherent in the majority of the electorate and the proficiency with which the democrats pander to this country's lowest common denominator, I think we're in for a long cold winter.

Get down,

HH

"CNN ripped the National Review's Byron York's quote completely out of context and stood its meaning on its head, all so they could dishonestly bash Gov. Palin with it. This is the lowest form of sub-tabloid journalism. CNN's distortion simply proves York to be correct: the media are out to destroy Sarah Palin.

"York's quote, properly cited, assails the media for its horrible misrepresentations of Gov. Palin. And CNN reinforces his assessment of their tactics by misrepresenting what he wrote so they could again bash Gov. Palin.

"CNN clearly knows they did something wrong, as evidenced by their removing the question from their online video. But that's not enough. CNN should immediately correct the record, and apologize to Gov. Palin, Byron York and National Review and their viewers who were again subjected to their special form of journalistic malpractice."

#51. It is sad that you dismiss JOhn McCain because of his choice of running mate. Have you heard Joe Biden lately and his "rhetorical flourishes"?

I'm not going to argue the merits with you as to why I think Sarah Palin was an excellent choice. I will however ask you, if you have been truly following the action, so to speak, are you any more informed about Senator Obama than you were say a year ago? Or are you so caught up in your anger at the republicans and the condition of the economy, for which truly, everyone on both sides has culpability, that you are willing to put up with what may prove to be a disaster of an administration? You have to really begin to wonder when his own running mate, having made an excellent case for his lack of experience in the primary season, is now letting the cat out of the bag as regards what he perceives to be Obama's future decisions. Try to look at everything logically, without emotion and anger. If you vision of the future concerns abandoning capitalism and moving closer to socialism, closer to "spreading the wealth" then I guess you have your man. Many of us would like to see our country get through this crisis, without a tax raise, with a man in the white house who, having experienced war first hand will not be so quick to get us into any others. Obama may be right for the country sometime in the future, what we seriously need now is experience and that is what John McCain brings to the table. He also brings the truth.

Full disclosure: I also happen to agree that with regard to qualifications, Senator McCain almost certainly could have done better than Governor Palin. Notwithstanding virtually everything that came out of Senator Clinton’s mouth, the selection of Governor Palin as a vice-presidential nominee may well be one of the more flagrant examples of the subversion of governance in favor of political expediency that we’ve seen over the course of this election.

Bob Barr is looking more attractive with every day that passes. Sigh.

as opposed to an emptier suit of Obama?
Actually, Palin is not an empty (snow)suit in comparison with Obama at all.

She has strong views that are classic American: hard work, family and business. Compare this with welfare for all of Obama.

It's really quite clear which side deserves American presidency this term (McCain). However, Obama can still govern Kenya. He can't really do much damage to that country already ravaged by his predecessors.

68

Posted by guest , Oct 23, 2008 3:16PM

67 Except that Alaska is the epicenter of welfare. Essentially a negative income tax (they distribute income to residents, rather than collect it) and at the same time number one in per capita funds taken from the Federal govt. But the empty suit comment was based on her performance the few times shes been in front of people asking unscripted questions. Dismal is charitable.

66 And Barry O is just an empty regular old suit. It's a fact! You're a stupid doodyhead!

See how stupid that sounds? Try to add something actually factual to the conversation.

@68
You are ridiculous.
Let's not bring up Obama's "performances" when his campaign started. He's polished them quite a bit too since.

So lay off of Palin.
She is solid.
If you have nothing else to do, go for a walk or something.

69 Factual is easy. See him answer questions in a debate or press conference. See her avoid same. Or on the rare occasions when avoidance is impossible, make a total fool of herself.

@71
Have you ever listened to what Obama says? Really thought about his words divorced from great delivery?
He says nothing. A big great empty void. Just like the empty suit he is.
At least Palin, when she talks, has content. Obama does not.

Part of it is because he is an anti-semite, all while deftly collecting money out of your pocket.
Watch him let Israel burn.

I wonder what you'd think of him afterwards.

Voting McCain/Palin is a much easier way to go, however.

72 Thanks for that "anti-semite" "let Israel burn" comment. No I know that I was foolish to take you even slightly seriously.

71- I'd rather have a VP tank a couple questions about what newspapers she reads rather than elect someone to President who slips up and reveals his socialist agenda. I'd also rather not watch all the supporters of that candidate make fools of themselves for attacking some guy who had the nerve to ask him a question about his agenda rather than do any true investigative work into the candidate.

@66 et al. how much are you getting, like, $0.10 a post?

Yeah, let's elect Mclame/Palin so we can further decrease our already diminished standing in the world (if that's even possible).

You know deep down inside you wish he would have picked Romney or somebody remotely qualified. However, I do admire your undaunting support for the GOP. The crips or the bloods could use that kind of blind support.

The lady went to five univ for crying out loud. Game.Set.Match.

75. What does the number of schools Palin went to prove? You follow that with a game/set/match?

Believe it or not, we're still #1 baby. USA! USA!

76 Noonan said it best last Saturday. This is America, we don't automatically dismiss people that went to no school or the wrong school because they often surprise you. And she gave Truman as an example. And chided the D's for making fun of Sarah the weekend she was nominated, because she didn't have any ivy degree. But then she pointed out that Palin has had plenty of time since to show us her stuff and has come up totally empty.

@75-76
Yes, she went to these Universities because ... she was not given scholarships based on her color.
She actually had to work for her education.

Palin said she wants to name a son Zamboni.

FAIL.

I also like how she keeps repeating the same point she was trained to repeat, "HE WANTS TO TALK TO ENEMIES WITHOUT TEH PRECONDITIONS!", when interviewed last night by Brian Williams he asked her what "preconditions" she would imagine, and she showed in her response that she has no idea what preconditions are.

FAIL.
