This is total bullshit. Cramer should have won.

Economist, ECOMOMIST?????
I thought he was a freakin' political columnist.
Seriously, what would you expect from a far left org like the Nobel twats?

"Monday’s award is the last of the six prizes and is not one of the original Nobels, but was created in 1968 by the Swedish central bank in Alfred Nobel’s memory. Mr. Krugman was the only winner of the award, which includes a prize of about $1.4 million."
humility is such a virtue:

Saavik: Any suggestions, Admiral?
Kirk: Prayer, Mr. Saavik. The Klingons don't take prisoners.
Saavik: Because... there was no way to win.
Kirk: A no-win situation is a possibility every commander may face. Has that never occurred to you?
Saavik: No sir, it has not.
Spock: The Kobayashi Maru scenario frequently wreaks havoc on students and equipment. As I recall you took the test three times yourself. Your final solution was, shall we say, unique?
Kirk: It had the virtue of never having been tried.

it's actually very well-deserved and entirely expected among economists. if you fools knew anything about modern economics, you'd know he basically created modern trade theory in the 80s. this award has been a long time coming and it's got nothing to do with his political views.
Posted by guest , Oct 13, 2008 12:50PM
@13 I bet you believe that Al Gore had something to do with "peace" as well. Best of luck with that.
Posted by guest , Oct 13, 2008 12:52PM
@14 - this is 13, to answer your question, no, but i'm an economist so i actually know what krugman's early contributions to economics have meant for the field. aah... who cares anyway...
Posted by guest , Oct 13, 2008 12:52PM
Nothing to do with his political views my ass.
I wonder what Hayek would think of Krugman.

What economics awards are the Iceland central bank giving out?
Posted by guest , Oct 13, 2008 12:59PM
#13. If he would stick to economics maybe he wouldn't be getting this reaction.
Posted by guest , Oct 13, 2008 1:07PM
You can't even argue that Krugman received the award because he was old. And Krugman's contribution seems dubious.
Contrast his work to that of Engle and Granger, Akerlof et al., or Scholes and Merton. They had a substantial impact on academia and industry.
Whatever.
Posted by guest , Oct 13, 2008 1:19PM
Before he as a columnist with whom you may or may not disagree, Krugman was an exceptional economist that is held in extremely high regard, not only for his economic intuition by also quantitative prowess. His contribution to international trade theory is revolutionary to the Heckscher-Ohlin model built on Ricardo's comparative advantage theory.
I don't think anyone who is even passingly familiar with modern economics is suprised by this award. The real surprise is that he has received it at a relatively younger age.
It's a pity that many people won't be able to look past their disagreements with his political views.

"Andrea Mitchell tried to uphold the Krugman honor, but—as seen in the screencap—even she couldn't suppress a smile at the award's arrant absurdity.
Joe Scarborough piqued Mika's curiosity with his teasing of the news, while guest Jim Cramer saw the award as confirmation that America is well on the way to socialism.while guest Jim Cramer saw the award as confirmation that America is well on the way to socialism."

Posted by guest , Oct 13, 2008 2:33PM
Steve Cohen should have won it!
Posted by guest , Oct 13, 2008 3:23PM
Krugman's early shit was Trade theory's equivalent of Black-Scholes c. 1970. NAFTA & EU general frameworks were practically derived from his textbook.
/b/espoke.

would love to see the look on krugman's face when he dies and toddles off to nobel economist valhalla.
when they hand him his bucket and inform him "the only reason you're here is that we needed a pissboy. be sure to wait for the shake, genius."
krugman is a moronic partisan hack. him getting a nobel is just the last nail in the once-proud nobel coffin. by doing this, even more than honoring gore's magnificent efforts for "peace", or rigoberta menchu's fairy tale whoppers as "literature", they've shown themselves to be nothing more than a joke.
maybe the math/physics/chem nobels still mean something, *maybe*, but you gotta wonder.

Gasbag? Get back to work.

and stay there. And take #29 with you. Ok buddy?

oh, i'm # 29, windy man. you seem to have this idea your commands ought to be followed. are you kind of a big deal? a bsd? an internet bad dude?
krugman's a hack. the nobel committee is a joke. they picked him as yet another partisan slap at bush. history will scorn this pick just as they will the gore pick.
whether you like it or not. now run along, little man. crawl back into krugman's tiny little arse, where it's warm and safe. and stay there. ok, buddy?

#13 is absolutely right that Krugman is a well regarded talented economist. Anyone who has taken a basic Trade Theory class has learned about New Trade Theory along with the Ricardian Model, Heckscher-Ohlin , & Stolper-Samuelson. His textbook is widely read and apolitical.
Krugman as a columnist is a hack and often blindly partisan and shrill. Nevertheless I don't think it's a political pick. #29, do you really think the same committee that picks the Nobel Peace Prize picks the prize for Economics? The prize for Economics isn't even related to the other Nobel prizes, which is the cause of some controversy.

Wow! You prove my point again and I'm even ignoring that you are clueless about the various Noble awards that exist.
Listen, when you learn how to post in DB come back. Perhaps by that time your IQ will be higher.
Nah! Enjoy the bigotry at Freeperville. It's right up your alley.

why don't they call it as it is-- Nobel Prize in being Anti-Bush.

Honestly, I think Maureen Dowd was robbed.
Posted by guest , Oct 13, 2008 7:32PM
another thing about guys who think they're kind of a big deal, diablo - you know: the internet navy seals; the self-proclaimed BSD's - is that they just *have* to get the last word in. try as they might, they just can't not stop themselves from saying/doing dumb things. (rather like the moronic partisan hack krugman, actually.)(and the feverishly anti-bush nobel committee, it must be added.)
psychologists often see this as a symptom of deeper mental problems. how else can we explain the "gore, menchu, and krugman nobel laureate" trio of stooges? (i see krugman as "larry".)
what do you think, buddy?

Well, Jimmy Carter is also a Nobel laureate, if that counts for something.
Posted by guest , Oct 14, 2008 1:35AM
To all those defending Krugman here, have you actually ever read all the utter crap he spews on the NYT? I would have no issues if he were just writing random political stuff. But he actually writes about economics and uses the fact that he is an economist to buttress his completely bullshit logic.
That guy is a big fucking blot on economics and brings disrepute to it. I do not think you would think highly of any Nobel prize winning physicist if he went onto some wingnut forum and started writing about how the earth was only 5000 years old. Krugman economic does the equivalent on that. It is a gigantic fucking shame. The Nobel committee continue its descent into irrelevance.
That is the economic equivalent of
