Gawker did a little investigative journalism this afternoon (sifted through Facebook pics, sent and received Facebook messages) and discovered that Nouriel Roubini, AKA Dr. Doom, is not as full of gloom as we’ve been led to believe. To the contrary, despite his ‘get in your bunkers, this thing’s about to blow’ calls, he is out there and loving every minute of it. Roubs apparently has many friends on a certain social networking site, “draws a cosmopolitan crowd to the frequent parties at his Tribeca loft, and is, he told Gawker, “quite a cheerful person…[who] lives life to its fullest. To paraphrase Seinfeld; anything wrong with that?” Plus, and this is the most telling, his walls are apparently “indented with plaster vulvas.” Basically, this man is a fraud. Plaster vulvas scream nothing if not happy days are here my friends. The decor is downright ebullient, especially compared to Taleb’s choice of paper mache assholes. Or, and this might be more likely, he’s a sadomasochist getting off on this financial crisis sitch. Another bank failure and he’ll be down right giddy.

I saw Roubini interviewed on Bloomberg TV today. During one segment, he said, "We have too many financial engineers; not enough mechanical engineers."
Hmmm...TGFD = Mechanical Engineer...Hmmmmm. Thinking.

Relative quiet is expected to prevail in the thai rice market over the rest of this year as buyers will opt for only small amounts, in contrast to the big lots acquired during the food crisis in the middle of the year, rice traders say.
''The amounts are just hand-to-mouth and some shipments are as low as merely 1,000 tonnes,'' said Korbsook Iamsuri, chief executive officer of Kamolkij Group of Companies, one of Thailand's leading rice exporters.
She attributes the slow market to forecasts of greater supplies of rice from major producing countries such as Vietnam, which quotes about US$500 a tonne for white rice, much lower than $600 to $700 offered by Thai exporters.
Another major producer and exporter, India, is reported to have ample rice reserves and Ms Korbsook believes Indian authorities will lift their export ban next month or in February at the latest.
Market prices have kept falling since August after having shot up to an average of $990 per tonne of white rice in May, and $1,187 for Hom Mali fragrant rice in the same month. The rises, prompted by concern over a shortfall of food supplies and high oil prices, brought heavy orders from abroad.

Roubini received his Ph.D. in international economics from Harvard University in 1988.
Career
He served in various roles at the Treasury Department, including Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for International Affairs and Director of the Office of Policy Development and Review (July 1999 - June 2000).
