8:18: They're voting on the Amtrak and rail safety bill now. Lame.
8:28: Now they're debating the "U.S.-India Nuclear Agreement."
8:37: CNBC is showing us footage of McCain's car pulling up to the building. Also: a former "massage parlor-king" says he can ease political tension in Thailand.
8:39: They're taking roll, just got through the k's. Wouldn't that be wild if Kennedy came out for this one?
8:44: CNBC commentator from the CATO Institute says, "We're getting raped." I missed everything else, but I think he's against the bill.
8:46: I'm getting pretty bored here so I'm just going to say it: Senator Akaka.
8:50: Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH): "This would be a major mistake not to pass."
8:52: Senator Harry Reid (D-NV): Is giving what sounds like a speech at someone's retirement party. In this case it's David something's retirement party. "David has been party of our Senate family for 31 years." "He is a wonderful person." "He is part of our extended family."
8:54: Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is also talking about "David." I seriously think they're about to cut a cake.
9:06: They're voting.
9:09:: Stupid ass counter is not up to speed. So far:
13 v 4, Y v N
9:11: 30 v 4, Y v N
9:12: 40 v 13, Y v N
9:13: 40 v 15, Y v N
9:16: 56 v 18, Y v N (can't believe Feingold voted Nay.)
9:17: 65 v 21, Y v N
9:18: 74 v 25, Y v N (who didn't vote? Kennedy?).
PASSED. I feel like I should go buy a wooden bow and arrow.

Congress must have planned this all out: let the simpler bill fail, markets tank, draft bill with all kinds of extra shit in it, proceed to pass said full of shit bill because it took people's 401(k)s dropping a couple $1,000 in one day to make them understand that, yes, things are indeed bad.

@ 59 (aka Jay):
Promotion your blog "anonymously" in blog comments is not cool bro. Write something prescient, funny, or otherwise remotely entertaining and people will come by their own accord and/or link to you. Just a lil helpful hint mang, seriously chill on that though.
A few observations:
Why, in 2008, does there appear to be something like 3, 4 computers in the entire chamber?
Larry Kudlow: Wtf, no asshole collar today? GASP!!!

So they basically voted against the bill on Sunday so that they would have time to attach all their pet projects and cost everyone another $100 bil?
Posted by legal eagle , Oct 01, 2008 10:49PM
@97: Yes. Basically, they probably knew the bill was going to fail on its own, so they put it to vote prematurely. Then, when it failed and the market took a nose dive, they could then renegotiate by adding a bunch of bullshit pork. I'm not surprised at all, but it pisses me off to no end. What makes me the angriest is that no one from the senate or from the media even mentioned the parts of the bill that have nothing to do with the TARP (except Bess--kudos to you).
Posted by guest , Oct 01, 2008 10:53PM
@91 "Asked this once, but no answers: Why did the dow futures go down 100 points from where they were before the vote? Bill doesn't pass, market drops, bill passes (senate anyway) market drops. Any ideas?"
I think guest@64 has already answered your question.
Posted by guest , Oct 01, 2008 11:00PM
@ 91
Maybe people are just really starting to pay attention.
This bill gets us to a starting point. It is merely the end of the begining. Now we get to focus on the horrific economy and Q3 earnings shortfalls.
See what happened to MOS after it's EPS fell short today?
Government wants a big rally after this bill so they can say confidence is returning, That is the reason for the extension of the short sale ban. They know that short sellers would short into any rally because 3-4 weeks from now i bet we make new lows.
Economy is just really starting to crumble and people are just realizing that we are in a heap of trouble and this bill merely takes pure implosion off the table. It doesn't take a very deep recession off the table.

So Paulson can only buy mortgages and mortgage-backed securities originated or issued on or before March 14, 2008?
So if any of these were further sliced and reissued they would not be covered?
Also, what about other ABSs other than those that are mortgaged-backed?
