As you are likely aware, Iceland might go bankrupt. The silver lining? Cheap vacay for us! We just received the following email from Icelandair with the delightful subject line: "Insane Travel Offers."
With the dramatic increase in the value of the US Dollar against the Icelandic Krona, Iceland is now a top bargain destination, giving consumers nearly twice the spending power compared to last year. Take advantage of the great exchange rate and travel with our Iceland Winter Madness package.+ Packages from just $549* per person double
occupancy in Economy Class
+ Packages from just $999* per person double
occupancy in Economy Plus
You have to book by October 21 for a November trip, and, honestly, I'm thinking about going. Other places I'd be okay with taking a trip to include Buenos Aires, Dubai, and any of the Greek islands, so if it could be arranged to screw with their economies, too,** that'd be top notch.
**I am not saying we did this to Bjork-land.

My krona toilet paper is so soft.

This is concerning. The Europeans wouldn't and couldn't help them so they turned to Russia. (btw, there is a very hot pic of Putin on drudge showing his black belt). How will this effect the world? Other currencies. The people on CNBC who said buy the krona about two months ago.

I could go for Buenos Aires. Get. It. Done. Boys!
Posted by guest , Oct 07, 2008 5:54PM
Do it. I've been and its a great place. Check out the ad on the subway, which shows the blue lagoon, one of the must see attractions. Now get back to work. GAnalYst

Can't Bjork help out?
Icelandic bank benefit concert?
Posted by guest , Oct 07, 2008 5:58PM
Erin Burnett jinxed all places she visited.
I didn't expect Iceland to go that way.
Posted by Investorcluzo , Oct 07, 2008 5:59PM
@GAnalYst - I hear my "people" do well there (iceland) can you confirm? I'm presuming you would be able to tell.

Bess is going to check in in one of those ice hotels with her sweetheart.

cluz Can't confirm, but I'm assuming its like Sweeden, where I've heard from a good friend that that's true. He's practically assaulted upon entry at bars in Stockholm. I assume the same applies among straight boys. GAnalYst

The salmon fishing is most excellent.

Kjotsupa yum

Well, that de-valued krona should bring beer prices down to US$8-10 per pint.
Posted by guest , Oct 07, 2008 6:54PM
Dubai.
Dubai exchange rate is pegged to USD. No luck

Argentina has been cheap for years - their currency devalued in 2003, remember?

Antje Praefcke, analyst at Commerzbank, said the country faced a "balance of payments crisis". "We would also not be surprised to see the Icelandic krona lose its function as a medium of payment."
So make sure to bring some livestock just in case...

Iceland in November? Yeah right.
If they're still cheap next summer, call me.
Posted by guest , Oct 07, 2008 7:48PM
US gave Iceland the finger and this chica is none too pleased.

The weather ain't exactly peachy keen either.
The utter miserableness of the weather outside... Gale-force winds with sheets of vertical rain. Ugh. Right now 8°C [46F] [not that I would know, I haven’t tried to set foot outside today] and sunrise was at 7:52 am, sunset due for 6:38 pm.

It started to snow last night and I woke up to the sound of people scraping ice off their cars outside. The ground was completely white this morning and looks very beautiful, what with the sunshine we have at present. The leaves on my neighbours’ bushes are still green and look very incongruous with the snow on them. It’s set to warm up again this weekend, right now it’s 0°C [34F], sunrise this morning was at 7.43 and sunset is due for 6.48 this evening.

re Iceland. There's also a good indie music thing going at the clubs. Not totally Sigur Ros like either. Downside is that drinks are taxed to death but, as someone pointed out above, the weak krona should help that a lot. The purpose of the tax is to lower alcohol consumption but, with all that darkness and cold, good luck. People just do pregames to a degree you cannot imagine. GAnalYst

@16- truth. i almost went there this summer with my boys. hopefully the insanely expensive hotels/beers/hookers will have more value and less insane growth. i can attest though, that the women are blazing like a jamaican at union square.
you can, i shit you not, rent a "friend" for the night to fix you up with the strange tongued natives: http://www.nightlifefriend.is/Rvk.html

@ 18
Not so much anymore, they've caught on and prices have adjusted. With any luck and their penchant for populist pandering, they might be in trouble again soon.
