Subject: How to refer to our school
Chicago Booth Community,
Our announcement of David Booth's very generous and powerful vote of confidence in our business school and our rebranding the school The University of Chicago Booth School of Business have been nothing short of historic. The feedback has been as extraordinary as the gift and the naming of the school itself. To clarify, there are three ways to refer to our school:
*The University of Chicago Booth School of Business
*Chicago Booth
*Booth
The rebranding of the school has empowered us to move away from a generic description, Graduate School of Business or GSB, to Chicago Booth, which has the potential to become a world class brand befitting this world class institution. Our goal is for Chicago Booth to be the best business school in the world and to be recognized as such.We believe that referring to the school by name rather than by its initials will go a long way in helping us achieve this goal. We would like to elicit your support and help in successfully launching our new brand. When referring to your school, please use The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Chicago Booth or simply Booth. Please resist the temptation to call the school the BSB or the Booth School of Business.
I am confident that propelled by David's record breaking gift and the amazing press coverage we've already received, your thoughtful stewardship of the Chicago Booth brand will be just what we need to achieve unprecedented levels of broader recognition, familiarity and respect exceeding that of any other business school.
Thanks for your help and support.
Ted

Does anybody remember when GSB used to spew all that holier than thou bullshit about how it would never sell its name? Couldn't have been more than a few years ago. "We don't need to be like those Kellogg and Wharton clowns, we've got an awesome brand."
Nice job.

Lots of jealousy on the site today.

Is that what jack a$$es in power think about all day. Dean Ted Snyder is a tool.
I wonder how many of your grads have f-uped. Possibly more then Harvard?
....now that would be an interesting poll......
I am going to call it BS Booth.

What a fuckstick this Booth guy must be. There are starving babies the world over, but his $300mm needs to make sure that his name is on some buildings and that we continue to get excellent academic research into how efficient markets work.
Posted by guest , Nov 12, 2008 9:46AM
Chicago is a joke. and with the end of finance industry these guys are done. take you HP12 and go to H&R Block
HBS and Stanford are the only real business schools. And for industries, Purdue, OSU and Michigan. Other schools are scam.

From the school that gives us one of the most arrogant and stupid "theories" ever. Even in its weakest form EMH is dead wrong.
Bitter business professors that couldn't find a way to beat the market!
It is akin to saying Michael Jordan was a great basketball player because of sheer luck.
What a joke!

So is the rest of the world still using the portfolio diversification and options theories developed at Chicago?
Thought so. By the way, the last time I checked Wharton fucking blows. What a bunch of East coast nancy boys. You would last 2 minutes in the pits of Chicago.

Stanford has without a doubt put out the worst MBAs of the past several years, it's not even close. I'd take anyone from Purdue, UNC, Michigan, or even NYU instead.

Whats the measure of the greatness of a business school the economic theories they espouse, the wealth of their alumni?
If we are just talking about theories then Oxford and the University of Bonn arent too shabby.
As far as wealthy alumni take your pick:
Stanford
Columbia
Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México
I never understood these people that need their names attached prominantly to a building. It seems like some feeble attempt to cheat death. If you originally established the school, library etc. thats one thing but throwing around cash in hopes that a placard on a building will keep your mortal coil around forever shows more in the way of fear than magananimity. [The Schwartzman/Library building being a prominent example of the behavior]. Applauding this is like caring about those celebs. that are celebs. by dint of them being celebs. (Kardashian, Hilton, Mortimer, etc.)...lets add these guys to the list.
Ok my morning rant is done...

The level of discourse reached a new low with this thread...seemingly well educated individuals from HSB, Booth (I almost said GSB) and other schools have to remind all of us that the greatest error business schools have made over many years now, was to train "professionals" rather than gentlemen. Sad to say, but you hear more class from the oil change guys at your local Valvoline...
Posted by guest , Nov 12, 2008 11:00AM
Professionals? Like hookers? And how do you train a gentleman?
Posted by guest , Nov 12, 2008 11:01AM
@41
Why does it have to be so superficial? I don't think these guys are buying the name, I think their name is put on the school as a way for the school to display a token of their appreciation for the (significant) donation. Maybe, just maybe these guys are thankful for what their business school taught them and are not just in search of ways to extend their legacy. Is that so hard to believe?
Posted by guest , Nov 12, 2008 11:05AM
@48
Yes, that is so hard to believe.

That said, Booth as a name still sucks.
Posted by guest , Nov 12, 2008 11:46AM
@51, silly yet brilliant. Maybe YOU deserve a Nobel Prize in Economics!
Posted by guest , Nov 12, 2008 11:49AM
Selling the name is the strongest manifestation of the free market ideology and the belief that there is a right price for most things in life! Good to know the school practices what it preaches.
And the best thing is, name us anything, we would still be distinctly what we are.
More resources for research and the flexibility to keep attracting the best students which are likely to be great resourceful alums. Not a bad deal!
My only concern is that though $300MM is the highest individual donation to a b-school, I would have loved a $1B mark. But then, isn't it a recession?
As for free market and the opposition thereof... we invented it, we will tinker with it, and come up with a version that would all others would be taking as a gospel for few more decades to come. And then we move on to other things, its an evolving world, and as long as you have the brain power and the will to evolve alongwith the changing world, you are fine. Chicago has that, and so we are fine!
By the way, I love cynical criticism. Shows that people love us ;)
Go Chicago!!
