Does the Times get paid for writing those feel good 'MS 2.0' articles?
Was that anything more than a PR piece?
Will there be enough introductions-to-the-new-boss pieces this year to save the NYT dividend?

Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages, the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It measures neither our wit nor our courage, neither our wisdom nor our learning, neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country. It measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile.
Happy Thanksgiving.

4-
I usually don't like to bash other commenters (i'd rather stick to the ideas), but you, sir/madam, are a fucking moron.
A point by point refutation of your analysis...
"health of our children"- it's well documented that in terms of nations "wealth equals health." the higher a nation's gdp is, the lower the infant mortatilty rate, the longer the life expectantcy, and the fewer the diseases, infections, and other medical complications throughout the citizen's life. How healthy would your daughter be if she were born in sub-saharan africa?
"joy of play"- how much joy do you think children have weaving together rugs for nickels an hour in the middle east, scavaging through garbage dumps for scrap metal in indonesia, or serving as child soldiers in african civil strife?
"beauty of poetry"- Looking back, the art we still admire comes from the wealthiest societies (the art coming from when the societies were wealthy.) In order for some of society to be employed as artists, there needs to be, by necessity, excess supply of basic needs.
"intelligence of debate/integrity of officials"- Again, you can find the world most corrupt officials and closed-minded regimes in the world's poorest places. In this case, the causation seems to run the other way: good gov't, openmindedness, low corruption, and well-defined property rights create a wealthy nation, not the other way around. The fact still remains that if you look at a list of the most free, least corrupt societies, they will also be the wealthiest.
"wit/courage/wisdom/learning" Of course gnp/gdp measures wit and courage. Maybe not running into a burning building courage, but certainly the appetite for taking entrepenurial risk. gnp is also positively correlated to education (and educational achievement is HIGHLY correlated to personal income within the country)
"compassion"- the united states sends more foriegn aid around the world than any other nation. If a tsunami were to hit the US right now, how much "compassion" do you think would be coming from india, burma, indonesia, and thailand?
SO, in summary, you think that a society's economic production has nothing to do with the qualities you've listed as desirable. In fact, economic production has EVERYTHING to do with those qualities. So before you think we can all move to a commune where economics don't matter because we'll have "intangibles" coming out our asses, please stop and consider reality.
Happy Thanksgiving, all.
(Please remember to think of what you should be thankful for.)

Posted by cy , Nov 26, 2008 1:46PM

I don't care if it was something Jesus said while he was getting blown by Abraham Lincoln. It's absolute nonsense (for the reasons I listed), and we'd all be a lot better off if we stopped thinking that "friendship" or "compassion" will solve all our problems.

Some event-driven hedge funds won’t have much to be thankful for tomorrow. Wednesday’s news that Bell Canada’s $50 billion leveraged buyout — the largest in history — is in jeopardy will likely hammer several big funds that were gaining confidence the deal would close on Dec. 11.
Among the big names that owned Bell Canada shares are hedge funds Paulson & Company, D.E. Shaw and S.A.C. Capital. An arbitrage fund run by BNP Paribas also held about $129 million worth of Bell Canada stock at the end of September, according to public filings.
Other funds that held a substantial amount of shares as of Sept. 30 included Chesapeake Partners, Mason Capital Management, York Capital Management and Highbridge Capital Management.
Bell Canada shares were down as much as 40 percent in premarket trading after the telecom giant said Wednesday that a preliminary report by its auditor, KPMG, found that “given current market conditions,” it would not remain solvent once it took on the $33 billion in debt needed to take it private.

TGFD has been both blasted and cheered (mostly blasted) here on DB for sharing my exploits and opinions on "sex and crazy". I've stayed away from that lately because of all the grim news, layoffs, losses, etc, and I've been trying to masquerade as a sane person.
It wasn't too long ago that I got accused of "hijacking" threads when I put up just a few posts on "sex & crazy". The comments would run like Citi's stock ticker, and I'd get soundly thrashed.
I'm still in the process of writing my "Treatise on Women", and I've posted an excerpt from time to time when DB clowns kept clammoring for one.
Please accept my apologies for the "yahoo" behavior. I've never been there. Only DB.

Your comment isn't without warrant, and generally I would agree.. however:
TGFD is now (apparently) the bastard child of DB, he's been around here for months. In those months he's posted incessantly in favor of socialism and the downfall of our sector in general; I can't help but think there's something positive about his learning to trade, and take advantage of downside.
Our solvency can and will come in some greater form: that of our benefit to society. Through education we only seek to advance that --

TOP TEN THINGS THAT WILL GET YOU KICKED OUT OF THE MACY’S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE
10. Every time float goes by, screaming at top of lungs, “She’s gonna blow!”
9. Repeatedly asking total strangers if you can sit on their shoulders
8. Going up on Macy’s roof; fishing for Willard’s toupee
7. Throwing your hotel keys onto the float with Little Bo-Peep
6. Rubbing Kermit balloon on Al Sharpton’s hair; then sticking it on the Chrysler Building
5. Cold-cocking Santa; taking his place dressed as Roy Orbison
4. Entering your own float: The Life-Size Beat-Up Camaro with Fifteen Dudes Crammed in It
3. Taking a leak off the side of the reviewing stand
2. Going on and on about how much better the Sears Thanksgiving Day parade is
1. Marching pantsless

"you could have been on the Indian side of the encounter"
Is that meant to be a witty quip you MOFO. Real people are dying over there for no fault of theirs. I don't ask you or expect you (Americans) to be sympathetic of other people's pain, but atleast don't make fun of it. Human suffering is the same everywhere, even if the ones suffering are not white skinned Americans.

This post is highly likely to get expunged in the near future, as Bess for some reason seems to do, perhaps by accident.
Anyhow, the comment is in regard to Zwirn, who I used to work with and knew somewhat: dan, there is always a time to turn. there is always a time to seek the one who you have occasionally sensed was there. he is there. hang in there my friend. but pay attention. yours.

I see that the latest post, #117 is responding to #133. Hmmm...looks like a lot of posts have been expunged. If any of those deleted were signed by someone claiming to be TGFD, then those posts weren't written by me. I haven't posted anything since what is now #95.

poor zwirno, they guy does work really hard. but to be such a micro manager, it seems odd that the accounting irregularities could have popped up without his knowledge. that said, they guy was making money when others were losing it. which goes to show, if you lose the confidence/trust of your investors/clients, it doesn't matter what you do. Alternative Green Energy is the Future. Rentech (RTK) Significant Announcement on the Horizon
Company: Rentech
Ticker: RTK
Company Snapshot: Rentech is composed of two business segments each focusing on a major global issue, alternative green energy and fertilizer production. Rentech’s alternative energy segment is one of the world's leading synthetic fuels technology and development companies. Over the last twenty-five years, Rentech has developed and patented the Rentech Process, an advanced version of the well-established Fischer-Tropsch process. The Rentech Process can convert a wide array of carbon-bearing materials, including green resources such as biomass and municipal solid waste, into ultra clean fuels and chemicals ranging from jet fuel to diesel gasoline. Rentech’s objective is to help the world reduce its dependency on oil and lower emissions, including greenhouse gases. Rentech’s second business segment is their fertilizer plant Rentech Energy Midwest Corp. -REMC-, located in East Dubuque, IL. REMC is one of the country’s largest nitrogen manufacturers producing nitrogen-based fertilizer products and industrial nitrogen products.

On Friday, November 21, 2008 we recommended Rentech (Ticker: RTK) with a buy rating at .50 cents a shares. Since then a few positive and significant developments have taken place.
* November 22, 2008 Indiana and Illinois announce they are pursuing major clean coal power projects. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has announced a measure that will create 2 clean coal projects including a $2.5-billion plant near Taylorville, Illinois. That plant comes in the wake of another $2 billion coal gasification project in southern Indiana.

* November 22, 2008 Baard Energy has received its final air permits from the Ohio EPA which in turn allows them to build a coal to liquid plant in Wellsville along the Ohio River. One of the first of its kind. The permit is the third and final state environmental permit necessary for Baard Energy to proceed into final design and construction of the 53,000 barrel-per-day coal/biomass to liquids plant at the Columbiana County Port Authority site in Wellsville. Baard has yet to release who will supply their Fischer-Tropsch technology.

* November 22, 2008 President-elect Barack Obama reaffirmed his support for alternative energy. This includes Rentech’s Fischer-Tropsch technology that converts biomass, natural gas, and coal into liquid fuels ranging from jet fuel to diesel gasoline.

* November 24, 2008 The US Air Force concluded analysis of the effects of using a natural gas-based synthetic fuel with its Lockheed Martin F-22, as work to trial the technology accelerates through its trainer, transport and fighter fleets. The office of the assistant secretary of the air force for installations, environment and logistics is expected to select a private partner during December to develop a Fischer-Tropsch production facility at Malmstrom AFB, Montana.

As of Friday, November 21, 2008 for an Aggressive short-term trade we like Rentech at these current levels. Rentech will release fiscal year 2008 financial statements December 16, 2008. Rumor has it these numbers will be very positive.
Rentech’s stock price has been down significantly along with everyone else:
15 days down –43%
45 days down –62%
65 days down –79%
The last time Rentech hit .46 cents a share was October 27, 2008 and the stock proceeded to rally .43 cents to .87 cents a share. An 89 percent increase in 7 days. Since March of this year a 40 to 80 percent fluctuation in price has been common and we look for this level of volatility to continue. Rentech could easily exceed a $1.20 per share before year-end based on a number of reasons.
Rentech’s management is currently in a pickle. The stock has dropped significantly and the officers of the company need results ASAP if they want to be able to justify their year-end bonuses. In addition, all stock options are underwater including those belonging to the board of directors. As we have seen in the past, Rentech actively manages their stock price by issuing press reports before releasing their latest financial numbers. Only to be followed with additional press releases over the coming weeks in an attempt to influence the stock price. One news release could easily move Rentech’s stock price .50 to .60 cents like it has done so many times in the past. Two or more press releases could be very significant.
Press releases for Rentech's alternative energy segment could focus on:
* Technology licensing partnerships = Revenue increase
* Revenue and cost sharing relationships = Revenue increase and cost decrease
* New business strategies and directions = Shareholder assurance
* New product sales revenue generated by their Product Demonstration Unit -PDU- leading the way to future business opportunities as companies discover value in Rentech’s numerous gas to liquid products = Revenue increase and shareholder assurance
* Continued process improvements at their Product Demonstration Unit -PDU- facility in Commerce City, CO = Shareholder assurance
Rentech’s fertilizer plant, Rentech Energy Midwest Corporation -REMC- located in Dubuque IL, is an extremely valuable asset that generates a tremendous amount of cash. The value of this plant alone creates a support at current levels helping to reduce downside risk. Rentech currently has 166 million shares outstanding and their fertilizer plant alone is valued between 120-210 million. A quick back of the envelope calculation, 122/166 and 210/166, suggests a stock price between .73 to $1.27.
Rentech recently reaffirmed EBITDA guidance for their fertilizer plant and there’s a good chance Rentech will post a net income, something they haven’t done in years. Moving from a net loss to a net income would be a significant event and I think the street HAS NOT priced this into the stock. Last quarter Rentech successfully completed their Product Demonstration Unit -PDU- that converts natural gas into various petroleum based products like jet fuel and diesel gasoline. The completion of the PDU means a reduction in expenses. Combine reduced expenses with record fertilizer sales revenue, coming from greater demand for corn that is used in the production of ethanol based fuels, could translate to a positive earnings per share. Management needs a homerun if they want to justify year-end bonuses; there’s an incentive for them to be aggressive. Shareholders are less likely to be pissed off when they hear about seven figure total compensation packages when the stock is trading at $3.15 versus .50 cents a share. Again, management has a strong incentive to move this stock and all stock options are currently underwater.
Press releases for Rentech's fertilizer segment could focus on:
* Record fertilizer sales revenue growth for fiscal year 2008
* Very favorable EBITDA guidance for 2009
* Favorable asset valuation discussion of their fertilizer plant
As reported at Mutual Fund Facts About Individual Stocks -MFFAIS- the overall number of institutional owners has recently increased 20 percent from 81 to its current level of 97. This is very positive.
Institutions adding to an already existing position include:
Goldman Sachs added 825,221 shares
Vanguard Group added 5,662,885 shares
Barclays Global Investors added 1,918,971 shares
Credit Suisse added shares
Putnam added shares
Oppenheimer added shares
Northern Trust added shares
Bank of New York Mellon added shares
Bank of America added shares
Wells Fargo added shares
There’s a large short position, I believe 8-9 million shares and it’s probably a safe assumption that these sellers are in the money since Rentech is currently near 52-week lows. If Rentech’s stock price does move quickly, press releases and an overall market rally, we could see short sellers add to the buying as they lock in profits. This 1-2 combo could move Rentech’s stock price in excess of .40 cents a share.
Because of a crisis in confidence the major indices, DJIA and S&P 500, have seen a record setting retreat in the last 30 days, especially in the last 7, and the market is due for a 1,200-point rally. This alone could move Rentech’s stock price .30 cents a share.

What to say about shamwow?
Fuhgedabouddit.
Have you ever seen those black T-shirts, the ones with the "Harley Davidson" logo on the front, and the admonition, "If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand" on the back?
That's how it is with shamwow.
In fact, the Hells Angels tried to adopt shamwow as their own, but the BSD's on Wall Street, from whom Satan himself takes his orders, intervened. There was a big party in the Hamptons, liberally supplied with the sort of things Hell Angels like to find at parties, and they were appeased; literally eating out of the hands of the Investment Banking elite.
And so, shamwow was saved to live another day.

Hope you didn't go the that Walmart where the crowd trampled some poor clerk to death.
Serious Question for all:
Effect of Mumbai on next weeks trade?
It appears that some of the Terrorists were brits (pakistain brits).
The terrorists killes U.S., Brits, Isrealis Canadians, Auzzie ect.
Isrealis already landed a "resucue assistance team" (i think that is now code for mossad) last night.
What is any effect could this have on market next week?

RTK has potential but this flaccid gyration below $1 for however long its duration, is interpretively worthless. Buy here, cry here, until we cross a dollar, I consider the form meaningless. The other side of a dollar is what I am looking for. Very little else is of significant consequence visually or constitutionally until then.
And it is as ever the look and trend of particular indicators, obvious, stark, contrasting, positive representations of changes in opinion, obvious distinctions and reversals, verses the reek and stain of this enduring bottom.
The threshold is worn from the passing of so much potential, but still in a threshold's place.

You may lauf now 129 and 130 but he who laufs last laufs the most. This is a quaint time of year. We hearken back to an image of yore when harvests and thanks came along side contrasts to misty memories with things that were less fanciful.
Any details would not take away from the sweet flavor of yams or the comfortable rest after dinner.
But as those days passed so these days will.
Just as days of yore become the days of yore, they keep possession of their methods and technologies.
The wagon becomes the automobile. The whipped cream becomes the Cool Whip.
The use of coal will find its way along to a safer crossing. It will again be welcome at our feast in its new fashion.
