    @5- “His wife filed for divorce the day this story broke” yes, she did.
    “That is not his wife, that is his girlfriend.” wrong, but nice try.
    ” Bernard Madoff’s investors have lost everything, but his son and daughter-in-law seemed without a care in the world yesterday as they dashed around SoHo on a holiday shopping spree.
    MORE: Madoff Sickness
    Andrew Madoff, 42, who worked with brother Mark at their dad’s now-failed financial firm, still drives around in a BMW SUV to do his holiday shopping, loading up with purchases from J.Crew, Longchamp, Kidrobot and other tony stores in SoHo.
    Andrew and wife Deborah, 41, who live on the Upper East Side, also shopped at American Eagle and a high-end lamp store, and checked out the windows at Vera Wang.
    “I’ve got no comment,” Andrew said, while Deborah – who sued Andrew for divorce the same day his dad was arrested – smiled but also declined to comment.
    A spokeswoman for Andrew’s lawyer said the couple has been separated for the past year, but described the split as “very amicable.” She declined to comment on the timing of the divorce filing. “

    what do you get the man who had everything, squandered, lied and schemed it all away without the knowledge of anyone including his wife, sons, clients and friends and is still slick enough to be placed under house arrest?

    These people make me sick – the family was obviously involved, there isn’t any possible way they didn’t know what was happening. They should have the decency to at least stay home to show RESPECT for all the people who lost money because of their scam – they shouldn’t even have access to their accounts. All their bank accounts should be frozen right away. Some people can’t afford to be SHOPPING right now because of them – some people lost their life savings including a widow who Madoff told a few weeks ago to give him all her savings. If they have to shop couldn’t they at least do it online instead of out in public? The entire family is just disgusting.

    23 I’m not disagreeing with you, but I’ve observed over and over that the very rich are totally different from you and me. They see life in a way that seems truly bizarre to the rest of us, including those who are by most measures very successful. See for example Madam Noel’s comments about the Greenwich “cottage”.

    @24,
    Welcome to “America” my friend. A haven for thieves, the incorrigible, and libertines. We live without social discipline or the fear of any consequence. As such, this country will eventually be destroyed or destroy itself…

    #24 – You’re making excuses for them. There are some people who are very rich who have a conscience and would have the decency to know that shopping right now while some people have lost everything is disgusting. Even if they weren’t involved they should know that it’s inappropriate to be SHOPPING in public this way.
    There are some rich people who don’t have a conscience but there are also people who aren’t rich who are the same way – it’s not about money. Some people will rob homes and kill the people who live there, then use their credit cards to go shopping – is that normal? Some drug dealers angry at someone for stealing from them will shoot innocent people including children, then go home and watch TV – is that normal?
    The Madoffs are exactly the same as those people – they don’t have a conscience. It has nothing to do with money.

  32. Posted by guest | December 22, 2008 at 2:28 PM

    31 Not making excuses at all and would agree with you that there are always exceptions. I do however stick with my orginal thesis, which is that the very rich are weirdly different. Which does not surprise me since they are so shielded from the reality that the rest of us – including the merely successful -see.

  39. Posted by Evaluator Speculator | December 22, 2008 at 5:23 PM

    This gets murkier and murkier – Madoff’s sons turn him in, and the same day his wife files for divorce – unless she had it prepared, it’s more likely that she would have been shocked and taken a couple of days to divorce. It just seems like a ploy on their part to protect their personal assets – settlement should be interesting. I say Madoff Jr gives his wife a huge settlement – and some time from now, they get together again…
