Holiday Housekeeping

Picture 473.pngSince one of your fellow commenters has brought to light the plight of the less gifted contingent of the Dealbreaker community, we figured we'd remind them once again, in case it was missed previously, and previous to that:

Programming Note: We're on an abbreviated vacation-esque schedule 'til the first Monday of '09 (opening/closing wraps and very limited updates whenever the urge to reach out and touch you moves us). We still want to hear from you, though, so if Glenview closes up shop, or Bernie Madoff slips in the shower and you've got pics, do not hesitate to let us know.

Now, until we get back which, as indicated above, could be at any time, talk amongst yourselves. Here, conversation starter: New Year's and your plans. For those of you in need of inspiration, after the jump, a preview of how our favorite Stamfordian is planning on kicking off the night:

*Except he'll be doing this on skates.

@1 doesn't it suck when you've got nothing to do because you either have no job or you've become keenly aware of the fact that you're a loser who can't entertain himself, and DB isn't there do it for you?

What about the $23 mil. Haitian ponzi scheme, apparently the SEC finally caught one....even a blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then

9

Posted by guest , Dec 30, 2008 1:07PM

@8 what connections did the guy behind that scheme have? Any daughters married to SEC attorneys? Did he sit on any committees? Make any campaign contributions?

10

Posted by Anal_yst , Dec 30, 2008 1:23PM

Bottle of Johnnie Walker, ice bucket, lowball glass, and a couch, those sound like pretty good plans at this point.

Let's pretend we know what we're talking about:

Mixing Johnny Red: Who cares?

Mixing Johnny Blue with anything but pure ice from Alpen streams and flown in directly : Legitimate Sin.

Any news years eve will be better than the one when I had a great time drinking with this very hot latina - midnight-kiss- thought I was ok to drive and entered the onramp going the wrong way(hot latina yelling in my ear), had to make a u-turn on the highway, got to the hotel blacked out(not sure what happened with the hot latina) only to wake up with my girfriend knocking on the door. *shivers*

@13 JW Red was created with the intent to use it to make mixed drinks. Thier other brands are for drinking straight.

JW bothers me. Its not that it doesn't taste good -its OK- but it just kills me to think of good single malt get blended. Its like making ground beef out of an aged strip.

Nobody beats up people or breaks arms like Steven Seagal.

47

Notice how when the market tanks movies like Charles Bronson's and Clint Eastwood's "angry, vengeful man" hit the screens and make huge amounts of money?

Look at the top movies of 1975, 1982, 1987 and now......except for Marley and Me.

48

Posted by guest , Dec 30, 2008 4:19PM

#47, you are talking bollocks.

top 2008 movies:

:: 1. The Dark Knight ($530 million)
:: 2. Iron Man ($318 M)
:: 3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ($317 M)
:: 4. Hancock ($228 M)
:: 5. WALL-E ($223 M)
:: 6. Kung Fu Panda ($215 M)
:: 7. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa ($170 M)
:: 8. Quantum of Solace ($159 M)
:: 9. Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who! ($154 M)
:: 10. Twilight ($153 M)

top 2007 movies:

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End
2. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
3. Spiderman 3
4. Shrek The Third
5. Transformers
6. Ratatouille
7. I Am Legend
8. The Simpsons Movie
9. National Treasure Book of Secrets
10. Bourne Ultimatum

in terms of demographic, they're awfully similar.

nice try on the armchair anthropology, but the facts don't support you.

might be enough to get you in the pants of some barnard chick though...

49

My NYE plans consist entirely of trying to get the wideclops drunk enough to have sex with me

50

Posted by guest , Dec 30, 2008 4:33PM

@48 - let's cut some slack here, and do some more looking at facts (Barnard girls - I am available)

I think the right place to look would be the return on investment for the good exploitation films, rather then total box - Grindhouse stuff is an easy substitute, but the genre does well in bad times.

And I'd throw out that it needs to be more then just a market downturn - it needs to be a feeling that something bigger is at hand, so 1987 doesn't count. You need job losses throughout the country, not just a bad bonus season in manhattan. (Top movie of 1987 - 3 men and a baby - point proven)

Quick anecdotal point - Eastwood's new flick is him shooting gangbangers, after a few years of war stuff.
