Any news years eve will be better than the one when I had a great time drinking with this very hot latina - midnight-kiss- thought I was ok to drive and entered the onramp going the wrong way(hot latina yelling in my ear), had to make a u-turn on the highway, got to the hotel blacked out(not sure what happened with the hot latina) only to wake up with my girfriend knocking on the door. *shivers*

@48 - let's cut some slack here, and do some more looking at facts (Barnard girls - I am available)
I think the right place to look would be the return on investment for the good exploitation films, rather then total box - Grindhouse stuff is an easy substitute, but the genre does well in bad times.
And I'd throw out that it needs to be more then just a market downturn - it needs to be a feeling that something bigger is at hand, so 1987 doesn't count. You need job losses throughout the country, not just a bad bonus season in manhattan. (Top movie of 1987 - 3 men and a baby - point proven)
Quick anecdotal point - Eastwood's new flick is him shooting gangbangers, after a few years of war stuff.
