If I know fishing equipment salesmen, they must have sold these Madoffs at least $50-100K worth of fishing gear. You can sneeze $10K in fly fishing, even if your not trying to look impressive. I'm sure they were trying to look impressive. They must have bought tons of rods and stuff. The sales guy must have had a field day. Fishing Gear. Waders. Asshats. At least that's what I bought.

Andy looks like a real outdoorsman. See how he is able to mostly supress the expression of disgust as the slippery beast flicks a drop of water on his sunglasses? You can't teach that sh*t.

were his sons in on the fraud?

5

Posted by guest , Dec 16, 2008 9:28AM

@4 obviously not, they're clearly only fisherman

What the h£ll? The Spode chinaware salesman has turned into a Ronco Pocket Pop-o-Matic Fisherman flogger? There's no place for late-night infomercials here. Go to CNBC.

the SEC took all their NYC interns on a field trip to the Madoff offices in 2000. to show how a well run trading/inv firm operates with the righ control, compliance, risk, etc.
this is a true story. they only went to the 17th floor. too bad they didnt get to peek at 18. maybe one of the interns would have smelled something

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

13

14

Posted by guest , Dec 16, 2008 10:03AM

15

Posted by guest , Dec 16, 2008 10:04AM

@10 unless you're a chick, leave now.

I have no first hand experience, however, those who do say the "boys" are spoiled brats and no one is surprised that they turned in their father to save their necks and whatever else remains. Anyone with first hand experience dealing with them?

23

Posted by guest , Dec 16, 2008 11:20AM

22 It appears that they turned in their father on advice of counsel, not because they're spoiled brats. If in fact they had nothing to do with the crime, that was their best course of action.

24

They are self-centered little dick-holes.

"Advice of counsel" is a weak little fig-leaf. These spoiled little Lord Fauntleroys gladly pushed the old fart off the cliff to save themselves.

The old man has had a good life, besides, it's what Daddy would have wanted, see?

Self-centered little dick-holes turn in Father. There's your headline.

Gotta give Bernie props for being a good father, he takes his sons fishing, buys them cool clothes, oh and takes the blame for the scam. "Turn me in boys, it'll look better for you."

Bess should start posting pictures of the show "Arrested Development" every time she writes something about Madoff.

27

@diablo- hey, what are you doing here? (and yes, the Gob and Buster had no idea what George Sr. was up to was very clever).

28

Posted by guest , Dec 16, 2008 12:04PM

who poses with a fish? seriously!

It's possible that this "wind-up" was put in place as a contingency plan long in advance, with the sons' names carefully kept off any paper or electronic trail, and the appearance maintained even to Madoff staff that the sons had no direct involvement with the "asset management" operation, with the idea that if and when "the gig was up", dad would take the fall alone.

While it's not impossible for one man to pull off something like this, especially given the use of a tiny CPA firm that needed the business and perhaps wouldn't even imagine itself qualified to question the activities of the great Madoff, I have serious doubts that someone Bernie's age could have pulled it off alone. It would require very high level computer programming expertise, and I haven't seen any suggestion that Bernie possessed any more computer expertise than the average 70 year old, or seen any hint of professional or educational experience during which he could have acquired it.

Definitly the "Poison Pill" strategy at work here; they probably set this When The Gig Is Up course of action on one of those fishing trips, over a campfire and a few good scotches. All milked it for as long as they possibly could, knowing the Jews would be at the gates looking for their money once shitty market hit the fan.

Crabcakes and football...that's what Maryland does!

Andy Madoff is the owner of a company that manufactures fly fishing equipment. He fly fishes often. I doubt that some salesman saw him coming. All reports indicate the sons were unaware of their father's wrongdoing. Why must people post cruel comments about the sons?

33

Posted by guest , Dec 21, 2008 10:57AM

I have known the sons for a long time. Very hard to believe they knew. Simply inconsistent with the way they think and lead their lives. I don't believe they could have lived with the knowledge.

If father could deceive so many for so long, he may have had many secrets from his sons. That seems to be a pattern with lots of criminals and their families.

This guy looks like a complete ___ (fill in the blank with your choice of noun) holding the fish. He probably is used to holding something along the lines of tube steak.
