what’s with EP’s stories that often read “presented without comment”? ppl don’t come to a gossip site to simply get links to other sites. Especially sites that require a registration…

Aren’t these clients of the broker dealer and not the investment advisor?
Looks very back office – not moneyed – to me.

I’d say it looks like these guys are choking on the foreskin of their best clients.

The programs of the Robert I. Lappin Charitable Foundation and the Robert I. Lappin 1992 Supporting Foundation are discontinued, effectively immediately. This includes Youth to Israel and Teachers to Israel.
The money used to fund the programs of both Foundations was invested with Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities and all the assets have been frozen by the federal courts. Mr. Madoff was arrested Thursday morning by the FBI and charged with criminal securities fraud by federal prosecutors. The money needed to fund the programs of the Lappin Foundations is gone.
The Foundation staff has been terminated today.
“It is with a heavy heart that I make this announcement,” said Robert I. Lappin, Foundation trustee. “The Foundations’ programs have touched thousands of lives over many years in our efforts to help keep our children Jewish.”

@ 8 — at first I felt bad about that charity hitting the pavement, but then I read there “About Us” page, and literally the first paragraph says,
“We believe that the most serious threat to Jewish continuity is assimilation and intermarriage. We are succeeding in reversing the trend of intermarriage and asimilation in our community by enhancing Jewish pride through the innovative programs of our Youth to Israel, Jewish Continuity and Interfaith Outreach Committees.”
What a bunch of racists. Good riddance.

  18. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 4:17 PM

They talk about their “effor to keep our children Jewish.” Creepy.

  19. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 4:18 PM

May I ask what is wrong with Aipac?
I don’t see anything. And that line is true but it does not mean it to be rude, the charities point is just to keep the Jews in his area together? What is wrong with that!

  20. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 4:29 PM

A login at charity tracking Guidestar allows one to read and download 501c3 tax returns.
Robert I. Lappin foundation is current only to 2006, but it shows a $57MM transaction with a 600K capital gain in “Bernie Madoff and Merrill Lynch” on 6/30.
I believe the transaction is a tax free roll over as the sales/purchase event occur on the same day.

  21. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 4:30 PM

“keep our children Jewish”? WTF? Is there a way to become a gentile? If so, where would I find this treatment?

  22. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 4:31 PM

What do you mean? sorry I am very bad with finances, could you explain

  23. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 4:33 PM

19 Why dont you google AIPAC and see why a lot of people think its wrong. In shorts, its critics (rightly or wrongly, I don’t know enough about it to have an opinion) view it as having far too much influence over America’s mideast policy.

  24. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 4:35 PM

All good things must come to an end sometime, don’t burn the day away.

  25. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 4:36 PM

21 I suspect it involves a foreskin and a sewing needle. Sure you’re interested?

  26. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 4:37 PM

AIPAC basically owns congress. No one wins who goes against them. They are a great argument for lobby limits. Read the book “They Dare to Speak Out.” It will turn your stomach.

  27. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 4:51 PM

@12,16,18:you are exactly right. these people are using US non-profits to promote a racial ideology just as the evil KKK would like to if its knuckleheads could…

lol, just substitute gentile in there and say “england”, and now it is racist.
21st century kids…all this racist crap is a profit-making social construct designed to target the ignorant and fearful.

  31. Posted by Anal_yst | December 12, 2008 at 5:52 PM

Ok ignorant scchmucks, let me boil it down for you here.
Jewish parents (or christian, or muslim, or whatever) generally wish their children to keep the faith, and marry/procreate within that faith.
Does anyone care to disagree with that?
    Ok, good.
Now, explain to me again how, it is so evil that an organization exists to help show young jewish people the history and culture involved in their faith, please, enlighten me.

  32. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 5:54 PM

Stop Jew on Jew financial violence!

  34. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 6:22 PM

31 – switch “jewish” with “white” and “faith” with “race”. go to hell.

  35. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 6:34 PM

@32, maybe best DB comment yet! put it on the #4,5,6 trains right next to the Dr. Zits ads…
@31, get over your racial pride, schmucko. most Americans, and obviously many Jews, do not obsess over racial purity the way you do. you and the Zoroastrians just happen to call your racial worries ‘religion.’
haven’t you noticed that the other major faiths were not ultimately racial at their core? if they were, why would so many gentiles happily marry jews, and vice-versa? why does moderate Islam, wacky as it’s co-religionists are, advise its youth to marry muslims, jews, or christians on the notion that all three are ‘children of the book?’
not quite the same game as the hardcore anti-reform cults, so don’t pretend they are….like @30 said, substitute a few words here and there and the aclu would be all over it.
    Schlemiel. War-starter.

  36. Posted by Anal_yst | December 12, 2008 at 7:07 PM

    @35
Slow down bucko. I’m not planning on marrying anything, Jewish or otherwise, and frankly if it came down to it couldn’t care less.
All I was trying to point out is that parents often like their children to settle down with someone with whom they share common beliefs, common traditions, etc.
Clearly have an issue differentiating race with religion and the culture, traditions, etc tied to that religion. If you can’t understand what I’ve pointed out very simply above, you’re beyond hope.
Oh, and if you like name calling, how about: Moron. Ignoramous. Politically correct, hyper-sensative loser.

  37. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 7:46 PM

@36 don’t like getting called out, eh?

  38. Posted by guest | December 12, 2008 at 7:51 PM

    It is sensItive, Anal_yst.

  39. Posted by Anal_yst | December 12, 2008 at 7:51 PM

And in the interest of full disclosure, I don’t suport AIPAC, or any other pro-Israel charities/causes (although I think in my younger years I funded the planting of a few Trees in Israel), so chill out before jumping down my throat.
    That is all.

  40. Posted by Anal_yst | December 12, 2008 at 8:01 PM

and now that I see it, @ 37:
Called out on what? Making the point that parents generally like their kids to elope with those with whom they share common beliefs?
Oh, yea, wow, I hate getting called out on making a reasonable point, terrible when that happens.
I dont’ get people like #35 who jump to conclusions and are hypercritical of all things even remotely religious.
Most people (myself included) aren’t really very religious at all, and I’d agree with the points that most don’t have a problem with intermarriage, however, for some, its a matter of keeping the faith, so-to-speak.
To me, its not the end of the world, but I can see how its important to others, at least to the point where I respect that decision and don’t chastise them and blow it completely out of proportion like # 35.
    I’m out, pz!

  45. Posted by guest | December 13, 2008 at 1:55 PM

@anal_yst: I’d be with you if it weren’t obvious to me that most of the Lappin foundations work was very political and based in a kind of ethnic pride. Not much to do with Judaism as a religion but more about political power, ties to the state of Israel and personal aggrandizement.

I work in an industry that is largely Jewish, I’m not but thats ok. I resent the fact that most of the Jews I come across have to make the point that they are Jewish. It usually comes up in the first introductions, not later than the second meeting. Its a fact, Jews like to do business with Jews. Is it racist? Dig deep and be honest with yourself before you answer the question. If we, meaning non-jews didn’t choose to do business with Jews we would be labeled an anti-semite, yet its ok for Jews to go out of their way, and they do, to do business with other Jews. I hope a lesson was learned in the arrest of Bernie Maddoff. He stuck it to his own people. The many investors, mostly Jewish, that invested with this guy, did it for at least a couple reasons: 1. Greed, even though they had to know it was too good to be true. Isn’t ignorance bliss? 2. Social eliteness, this guy didn’t take just “anybody’s” money. Just think, you could have given your money to a nice guy like me and you would still have it, well, most of it.

@46-49 I am in the same boat as you. I often wonder what the Jews around me would say if I showed up at work with a cross on my chest the size of your typical yamaka. I am sure I would be out of a job shortly thereafter.

  54. Posted by guest | December 14, 2008 at 8:52 AM

My mom inherited the Madoff investment after my step-father died. She isn’t savy when it comes to finances. I would guess there are many similarly situated widows down here in Florida. There was only about $450k left in her “account” as of this past Thursday. Not a lot, but all she had. We are hoping that SIPC will cover the loss. If so, she would be lucky. Our fund would be considered “net loss” as less was taken-out than put-in. Not sure, however, if Mom’s fund was on the broker-dealer side or the investment side. I understand that will be critical for SIPC purposes – hopefully it is broker-dealer for Mom. I don’t know. She received statements each month, but they are likely bogus, as Madoff controlled his own trades. The most unfortunate thing to come of this is the anti-semetism that has surfaced. Well, it’s always on the surface, but now accentuated. I’m amazed and frightened at the beliefs of those who are delighting in the horror being suffered by many Jewish families over this debacle. It should be noted that almost all of the money lost was hard-earned by folks who had absolutely nothing after WWII. That wasn’t that long ago. It was only through very hard work and perserverance that Jews prospered. It was through rigorous education and working in sweat shops to pay for a generation to go to college. How brave and industrious are the Jewish people! Think about the contributions to our culture from the sweat of the Jews. Even while persecuted, money flowed to the arts and science, charities and corporate investments. Before solidifying your anti-semetic beliefs, look more closely at what it is that you are not believing. Maybe you can find some truth.

    MADOFF THE WALL STREET FAKIR
    (Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer)
    WilliamBanzai7
You know Vesco and Boesky, and Keating and Milken,
Leeson and Mozer, and Ponzi and Wiggen,
But do you recall, the most famous securities fraudster of all?
    Madoff the WALL STREET FAKIR
    Had a GIANT PONZI SCHEME,
And if you ever saw it,
You could say it was Wall Street’s own worst dream.
All of the other Wall Street fraudsters
    Used to laugh and call him names;
    They never believed poor Madoff
    Made a legitimate Alpha trade,
Then one shady Wall Street trading eve,
Madoff spilt his own beans to the SEC
“Madoff oh your scheme’s so bright,
Won’t you go to jail tonight?”
Then how the Wall Street fraudsters loved him
As they shouted out with glee,
    “Madoff the WALL STREET FAKIR,
You’ll go down in securities fraud infamy.”
Q: Whats the difference between Bernie Madoff and the CEO of a bulge bracket Wall Street investment bank?
A: Madoff is not asking for a bailout.

From now on, I’m making a new personal rule: Never do business with a Jew.
I don’t care who thinks that is anti-semitic.

  58. Posted by guest | December 14, 2008 at 9:18 PM

At the risk of being labelled anti-semitic it has been my experience that jewish people in this industry, whilst generally brilliant financial engineers, tend to wind things up so tight that in times of stress such as these there is nothing left for anyone else in the trade. And yes the tribe does tend to stick together but then theres probably nothing wrong with that.

  59. Posted by guest | December 15, 2008 at 8:45 PM

Listen #54, I’m sure most every one worked hard to make their millions, but you discount the way in which it gets done. You can’t even get off your ” ooh I’m scared because a gentile is saying something offenesive about Jew’s again”, diatribe. If being honest is offensive then too bad. You can’t for one minute know what its like to go into a meeting with all Jews and one smart ass asks if I would like some “ethnic food”. What, a few bagels sitting on the table. Excuse me, didn’t know that was “ethnic” food. Another, “i’m Jewish, just want you to know before we start the meeting”.If that wasn’t clear to me, it certainly was when the words together, “cheap price” finally made its way into the discussion. I don’t care if you are a Jew, I don’t give a shit ok! Just don’t be a Dick, don’t steal from me and we’ll get along!
