Picture 596.pngThis has got to hurt. The Times reports that save for the time he “invited a girl all the way from New York” to a formal at the University of Alabama, Bernie Madoff’s Sammy brothers don’t really recall jack about the Ponz. master. Martin Brill told writer Allen Salkin (‘s dad, who overlapped in the house with Berns for a year), “There isn’t much about Bernie that stands out in my mind. He was a low-key sort of guy who stayed out of trouble but also lacked any outstanding personality trait.” Malcom Lindy noted harshly, “He wasn’t an outstanding athlete or outstanding with girls. I just don’t remember anything outstanding about him.” Leonard E. Indianer said he “doesn’t recall [Madoff] at all.” There is hope, for the sake of Bernie-boy’s ego, however, in Nancy Daar’s categoric denial. Nancy, Arthur Daar’s widow, claimed vehemently that her husband “never, ever mentioned Bernard,” implying that the two didn’t even know each other. But Dealbreaker readers know better. The real subtext here is deeply repressed shame over Madoff beating out Daar for the title of fastest ookie-cookie finisher during hell week. Didn’t know him, my ass.

I’m still trippin’ over the fact his father *and mother* were both con artists and embezzlers.

  2. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 11:53 AM

There are jewish folks in Alabama?
I stay far, far away from that state.

  3. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 11:55 AM

And Madoff fails to accomplish actions worthy of the highest precepts of true manhood, democracy and humanity…

  4. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 11:59 AM

2 Really enough MOT’s at U Alabama to have a SAM chapter?? Who knew? Is ZBT also there?

  5. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 12:02 PM

Why can’t jews go to Alabama? Is it really that bad?

  6. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 12:03 PM

“He wasn’t an outstanding athlete or outstanding with girls”
Unlike the vast majority of the svelte and suave of SAM, I suppose?

@2/4- first graph of the article:
“A half-century ago, Bernard L. Madoff, accused of masterminding one of the world’s largest Ponzi schemes, attended the University of Alabama as a freshman, and then, after a year, transferred.
Like a lot of Jewish young men from New York who headed to the South for an inexpensive education in the 1950s, he joined a Jewish fraternity, in his case Sigma Alpha Mu, known as the Sammy house.”

7 Live and learn. And here I thought that the place to find an inexpensive education in the 1950′s was one of the City colleges. CCNY if you were smart, Brooklyn a little less so, Queens less so than that.

Alright, it’s about time one of my fellow Sammies achieved greatness.

  10. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 12:17 PM

I was ZBT — Zillions Billions & Trillions baby!

  11. Posted by Lowly Assistant | January 20, 2009 at 12:17 PM

Per usual, the NYT is full of shit. Bernard Madoff has never retrieved soda for man, woman, beast, or child. Young yeled Bernie did, however, shine a mean shoe for a shiny nickel or three.

  12. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 12:24 PM

Sounds like that old stereotype still works: ZBT the jappie guys, SAM the more sensitive, Seth Meyers types.

  13. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 12:40 PM

    what about aepi?

  14. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 12:45 PM

    zany bagel tossers?

  15. Posted by KLW | January 20, 2009 at 1:12 PM

This article seemed equally concerned with Jay Salkin’s cream cheese obsession as anything to do with Madoff, but if I know Jewish frat boys, the details of that are best left alone. Oh, and fuck ZBT, by the way; if ever there was a house I contemplated lighting on fire, it was yours.

  16. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 1:23 PM

    @13
No bagels but AE pi ran a pizza house out of their fraternity house when I was in school at Georgia Tech, and they were righteous. Unfortunately the Catholics(Domino’s) screwed them over. As always.
#15 At UVA ZBT was the recipient of an unwelcome visit by the Feds. Apparently they were the x dealers of choice. Their house is now campus housing.

  17. Posted by Anal_yst | January 20, 2009 at 1:28 PM

    @ 16
And what self-respecting frat didn’t have their own “in-house” dealer for any number of pharmacological remedies?

  18. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 1:38 PM

Its yukie cookie! no one cares who finishes first, so long as you are not last!!!

  19. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 2:07 PM

18 So frat boys really do such things. I thought it was just some urban legend. Doesn’t it strike you as too gay for words?

  20. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 2:08 PM

Damn…I didn’t know Madoff went to Bama. Well that explains EVERYTHING

  21. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 2:15 PM

@16 UVA kept the Zany Bagel Throwers house? If there was any structure on Rugby deserving of a teardown, it’s that house. It was a piece of shit the day it was built. It even made Delta Sig look good.

  22. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 2:18 PM

@21, must be a DKE or EX

  23. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 2:24 PM

ZBT at Penn got kicked off in the late 80′s for an incident involving a stripper, a pickle and ketchup…

  24. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 2:56 PM

    4:
There is ZBT at Bama but I don’t know about SAM, which I’ve never heard of before today. Really hilarious and surprising to find out he went to school here for a year. ZBT is mostly Jewish kids from Birmingham that have good weed.

  25. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 3:06 PM

Yet another reason the University of Alabama is GARBAGE.

  26. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 3:17 PM

UA is one of the greatest places on earth. Second to only Athens, GA

  27. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 3:49 PM

4:When Madoff went to the University of
Alabama in 1956, there were four Jewish fraternities: AEPi (mine);Kappa Nu;SAM and ZBT.Also three Jewish sororities.
I understand that in the 30`s the Jewish student population was even larger (about 1/3 of the enrollment),largely because of restrictions on Jews attending schools in the North and a welcoming attitude by
    the University`s administration.

  28. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 3:53 PM

24 I remember from college how super wealthy the Jewish kids were that you met from the south. Families in textiles, industrialists. Puts the NJ, Long Island crowd to shame. I guess its the dumb sons that wind up at places like UAlabama.

  29. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 4:46 PM

    @23
ZBT at Penn came back, and then they got kicked off again 4 years ago. However they countinued to operate “underground” as “X-ZBT” pronounced “exhibit”. Which is clearly all you need to know about what cool kids they were.

  30. Posted by guest | January 20, 2009 at 6:45 PM

1st year ZBT here, what are SAM numbers?

  31. Posted by PacificGatePost | January 20, 2009 at 7:42 PM

Just think about how valuable Bernie Madoff would be to the process of cleaning up Wall Street.
    - He’d be willing to talk in exchange for “reduced time.”
    - He has mountains of insider information that would provide investigators fuel for indictments.
    - He has evidence that no-one else would share since no-one else has reason to.
    - He could provide information and insight on the offshore game.
    - He could provide names from London, to Monaco, to Singapore on funds and their underbellies, etc.
    - etc. etc ….
The DA should offer him a deal he can’t refuse for this kind of participation in cleaning up the mess.

    @6 Priceless.

  33. Posted by guest | February 20, 2009 at 10:54 AM

FYI, folks, Madoff never finished pledging. He was only at Alabama for one semester, and never entered the rolls as a member of Sigma Alpha Mu.

    @19
no they don’t. Do you believe everything you read? People put down fraternities in any way possible, in order to fulfill their inherent, unfounded hate for them.
