Though we were pretty sure the cannoli surprise back in October was intended to be a hint as to what employees at Morgan Stanley could expect come bonus time, it seems as though John Mack has come through yet again for the Mackettes. The following numbers are apparently confirmed, for "a blend of industry and product bankers" (they do not include base pay, and it's unclear what the mix of cash vs. deferred cash vs. stock is). According to one of the happy government workers at 1585, "I was surprised how high they came out, but given who's left (the A-team), not surprising that they are being taken care of."

seems high...

rough gig getting those numbers
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:13PM
why not just screw everyone below MD, especially given taxpayer involvement? it's not as if they would jump ship in significant numbers (given that all ships are sinking)... adverse selection not a concern here

VP's are pretty tight within tiers YoY
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:18PM
A year from now number will be half that.
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:21PM
This is versus what last year? Are these numbers half/a third/a quarter of what people used to get?
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:21PM
these numbers are too high.
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:22PM
these are wrong

Danny Deutsch, Alcoa, BoA, Merrill and now Julie Alexandria of WallStrip...where will the madness stop?

Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:24PM
i'd heard ms bonuses trumped gs's this year, these numbers seem legit.
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:26PM
@5
You can't screw the people who actually do the work. We'll just make them look like an uneducated jack asses in the next meeting.
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:27PM
what ever happened to bonuses based on how much cash (no not profit, CASH) you generate, like, you know how things work in the real world.
I look forward to the day when all of these guys get shorted out of existence.
I'm doing my part to fuck their forex desks.........how about you
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:30PM
what were last year's #s ?
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:30PM
i call bs.
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:32PM
@17 - good luck with that. Aim for the holes where the monitor wires go down to the outlets . . .
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:32PM
what about stub??
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:42PM
not a chance these are real numbers
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:42PM
by way of comparison--Feb 08 bonuses for top tiers at bulge brackets:
1st yr assoc-$275k
2nd yr assoc-$350k
3rd yr assoc-$450k
1st yr vp-$550k
2nd yr vp-$650k
3rd yr vp-$800k
So the Feb 09 bonuses are down 30-50% from the peak a year ago, which makes sense given how many layoffs there have been as well

Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:51PM
Those aren't dollar amounts it's the number of MS shares they get.
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:52PM
Getting cannoli's for bonuses is the new killing it
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 1:57PM
Is it possible that this year "top tier" means top 5-10% vs. 30% last year (or whatever the exact numbers are)? Just a thought.
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 2:09PM
These numbers are BS! The top tier is close but no cigar....below top tier they got paid waaaaaay less......
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 2:17PM
Posting from my sweet sidekick II in the poohouse @ 1585. The #'s above are BS. Legit data below:
1st yr assoc- 1 blumpie
2nd yr assoc- 2 handies
3rd yr assoc- 3 a-rapes

17-
Can you please explain exactly what you're doing to "fuck their forex desks?" Unless you're the treasurer of a multi-national corporation, a central banker, or in charge of an 11 figure hedge fund, I don't deem this to be likely. However, I'm always ready to learn something.
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 2:40PM
these are right
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 2:48PM
What's the breakdown of these figures? Anyone know yet... what is cash/stock/deferred, etc.

Bonuses?? Interesting! Where I work in MS we didn't get 2 cents!!We were told all the blah, blah about what a tough year we were having. Not a single cent in a raise or a bonus. Nice to know that MY tax dollars are helping out.
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 3:30PM
Anyone have info on what GS 1st year associates got?
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 3:54PM
@43 - El Shafto!
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 4:05PM
These seem low
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 4:09PM
Cannoli is for closers!
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 4:21PM
What percent of people move from one tier to another from year to year? It would suck to go from top tier one year to middle tier the next year and take a pay cut despite giving another year of your life.
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 4:24PM
These numbers are too low. Reality is that they were a bit higher.
Posted by miami , Jan 07, 2009 4:44PM
MS has a forex desk?
Isn't that a little like saying Jimmy Cayne was a hard worker?
I guess captive hedgies gotta trade with someone.

Stub bonus at MS was $25k... and GS stub was a healthy $5k

Stub bonus associate at MS was $25k... and GS stub was a healthy $5k
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 5:29PM
Seems tooo high. Doubt these numbers. After having taken TARP money this just seems ridiculous if they are true.
Having a job is the bonus in this environment!
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 5:32PM
To those saying these are too high... they may not be "nuclear winter" levels but are well below what some boutique firms paid this year.
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 6:19PM
@58, maybe not "well below" but can verify boutiques are paying very well this year.
1st yr boutique associate here, bonus is $140K (and yes, base salary is same as BB).
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 6:27PM
@59 A first year bonus of $140k qualifies as "very well"? That number sounds more like "down 50%".
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 7:11PM
Here come the "P-w-P" comments again . . .
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 8:17PM
wrong wrong wrong..
not to mention the tier distribution shifted most to low tier

@55/56
GS changed their analysts to align with everyone else - the figure you have is a stub first year ANALYST who has been on the desk 3 or 4 months. Not really comparable with your MS figure...
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 10:22PM
There is not a chance at all that these numbers are correct. Always was curious like #32 to find out what the PB reps pull though...anyone know
Posted by guest , Jan 07, 2009 10:37PM
@65- have you asked someone at ms? then obviously you really have no idea if they're correct or not.
Posted by guest , Jan 08, 2009 10:11AM
i'm curious what PB reps pull in too!! Anyone got any clues??
Posted by guest , Jan 08, 2009 12:11PM
60 - I would say 140K is "very well" THIS year, most BBs won't pay that much in bonuses for a 1st year associate.
Sh*t is down and f*cked up all over...
Posted by guest , Jan 09, 2009 9:57AM
@52 - NOT in IT
