As previously mentioned, last Friday Bank of Amerillwide chief Ken Lewis celebrated firing John Thain with half-priced scotch at Sonoma Restaurant in the BAC corporate center. Nothing really scandalous there (besides his terrible tipping) but the event apparently came as a shock to the regulars at Phil’s Tavern, who Mr. Lewis has seemingly been running around on. From the mailbag:
The story about Ken Lewis drinking at Sonoma at 6:30 on a Friday was a surprise to those of us in Charlotte because up until recently he could be found at Phil’s Tavern, a dive bar next to HQ, several days a week drinking scotch with Steele Alphin.
According to the (young, well endowed) bartenders he would call down (the man himself, not a secretary) at 4 to ask if “his table” was open then would show up at 4:30. These 4:30 drink sessions were a regular occurrence while our stock plummeted from $40 to $5. Sadly this is 100% true. The CEO of the former largest bank in the US spent many a weekday afternoon sipping scotch while his company fell apart. Oh…he also told the bartenders that he dyes his hair. If you want to check if this is true try calling Phils today around 4 and asking if his table is open. I bet they don’t sound surprised.

38 No way. NY is the only place that doesn’t have a big fatties quotient. A lot of people think its cause the people here walk alot. My theory is that its because its so competitive and theres a lot going on, so the ladies are not home at night eating ice cream and watching the Women’s Channel (or whatever its called). Plus all the cream from everywhere else tends to leave and land here. Same with the guys. Good jobs, good pay, live well, keeps you looking good, gets you a better job. Its a virtuous cycle.

Both of you grossly overgeneralize. Back in the realm of reality, LA probably has the hottest (albeit blatnetly fakest) women generally speaking. Depending on where you hang out/with whom, NYC has a metric f-ton of ‘em too, but you can’t extrapolate that to the general population.

i’m a born and raised nyc kid, did my undergrad locally and belonged to a fraternity.
“wall street” is based on timing as are most things in life. my only point is that out of 20 something guys i graduated with who went into finance, 15 or so have reached the pinnacle of this business including titles like partner at goldman sachs. most of us at least made MD or ED and about half retired in the last 3 years.
our group success was based on timing and not much more. we were at the front of the first generation behind the boomers and it was easy to be successful. not much competition and a lot of money. now you have too many smart people fighting for a penny from the same dollar.
the business has changed. too many MBA’s career planners.

Yes, “New York City” style … because the owners were from the NY area and have NY memorabilia pasted to the walls. I’m from NYC and I can tell you that the nightlife is not the same in Charlotte … HOWEVER, I must agree with others: you can’t compare the cost or the talent in this town to NYC –Charlotte wins!
