As you likely know, Bloomberg reported earlier that Erin Callan is taking a “personal leave of absence” from her job at Credit Suisse. A reader noted that Callan had something of a “nervous breakdown” this morning, and while we hope that isn’t true, a little digging inside CS suggests it might be. If you’ve heard anything else, let us know.

    I’m Starting a Class Warfare Pay-Per-View Channel – FYI

  41. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 1:40 PM

    @43
    I beg to differ.
The mess is not the fact that comp has become a hot topic for everyone on Wall Street.
The mess is what this industry has been allowed to do.
The mess is the aftermath which we are now living in…not the fact that there is no $$ to pay idiots rediculous sums of money for no apparent reason other than they feel they are entitled to it.

  42. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 1:42 PM

  64. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 2:14 PM

@9 @43 is correct, but to be fair, it was Congress of BOTH PARTIES who is to blame. It was Barney Frank in 1996 and a small caucus of individuals who led the laws of anti-red lining legislation, FORCING BANKS TO LEND TO LOW INCOME/LOW CREDIT WORTHY INDIVIDUALS. To be fair, if my memory serves me correct, Congress was run by Republicans, and Phil Gramm in particular who led the deregulation and consolidation of the “one-stop shop” banking legislation that President Clinton signed. When then President Bush #43 tried to reign in Fannie and Freddie in 2003, it was Barney Frank who stood in the way.
Obama is a socialist, but in no way to be blamed for this mess.
Wall Street has no credibility to cry about the new compensation rules. If you don’t like it, give TARP back. DON’T DEAL WITH THE DEVIL.

  75. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 2:26 PM

@50 + @68. You are in total denial. Respectively, what percentage of “troubled” mortgages were originated and/or bought by FNM/FRE, by banks, and by institutions not regulated by the CRA, to which you appear to be referring? And who FORCED Wall Street to securitize them? And who FORCED the rating agencies to misrate these securities? I could go on and on. An anti-government worldview does not even come close to explaining this sh-tshow.

gasbags seem on the verge of doing a callan as well…

  82. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 2:42 PM

#68 here. @79, you need to go back to school. I did not say that Wall Street was not blameless and that rating agencies were not order takers either. All this is true.
My thesis is that Congress is the PRIMARY driver of GDP (Being the “G” as largest spender) and the main fire starter when it comes to regulation or lack thereof. If you give a kid the keys to the candy store, you better d@mn well expect that he’s going to go in there and take all the candy he can. As for the rating agencies, they were comprised of individuals WHO WANTED TO BE THE KID IN THE CANDY STORE rather than the person giving the kid the keys. Everyone I knew who worked at rating agencies did everything they could to get into Wall Street. THAT INCENTIVE BUSINESS MODEL WAS FLAWED.
Since our country has not tried “true capitalism” in a long time (and probably wont now), anti-government DOES explain this s#!#show! The flaws of liberals, and Obama in this case, is that ATLAS WILL SHRUG. The best and brightest will go elsewhere and the primariy beneficiaries of Wall Street, state pensions, institutional pensions, large cities, will all suffer.
Now, while I’m at work adding value to my bedrock institution, I don’t have any data or numbers validating what % of the portfolio Fannie and Freddie originated, not originated etc. What I do know is that Fannie and Freddie were doing quite fine (not perfect) before the gates of h@ll were opened in the late 1990s.

TGFD just tuned in to DB, and I went right to the comments on this thread. Please accept my apologies for skipping all the other entries.
I’ve never been a fan of Erin Callan, so news of her “breakdown” comes as no surprise to TGFD. How long did she last at CS? 5 months? She couldn’t make it with Mr. Fuld, and now she’s failed again. I new she wouldn’t last in a position that was way beyond her capabilities. Back in August, I laughed about her appointment at CS and predicted her departure.
TGFD doesn’t really know WTF a ‘nervous breakdown’ is, but if “crying at one’s desk” defines it, then I think many people have had one and don’t even realize it. Obviously, something else is going on with Erin.

Really “vasoconstrictors” in a song??? Makes me glad I’ve never heard a Phish song.

    @126- because they’re inane spam?

  126. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 3:43 PM

I just want to know if she was escorted out to a waiting towncar that swept her away to rehab.

  127. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 3:45 PM

@129 One mans spam is another mans ecitement.
Seems there is a big foot fetish sollowing here on DB. Maybe we should create a thread solely for that and see.

  128. Posted by TheBlackstoneGroupie | February 4, 2009 at 3:46 PM

    @121
What the PHUCK did I do wrong??? I didn’t make her take the CFO position at Lehman Brothers, SHE DID it on her accord! And I find it AMAZING a tax lawyer such as herself is too lazy to read the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, and had to hire ANOTHER LAWYER to help her out. Hell, I have read it myself, and I will tell ya, from what I have read, she could hire every lawyer at Proskauer Rose, and it would not do her a bit of good. She should not be sent to prison though, exile her from the State of New York to an American Indian Reservation to serve her prison sentence; she can then rebuild her life out there, and become a better person. Bad enough she is going to be sued until the end of time, and will have no $$$…
And on a personal note, I do believe she is a “passive-aggressive” manic depressive. I can say this for myself because I am, and I do take medication to smoothe the highs and lows. Erin needs help, and I do hope she gets it!
Besides, everyone in the Phish community is PISSED OFF at the possible merger of Ticketmaster and Live Nation…we’ll never get tickets again, as the scalpers/ticket brokers will have the advantage. :(

@86: Barney Frank must be the most powerful person in Washington… he singlehadedly put the kabosh on all attempts to reform Fannie and Freddie from 2000 until 2006 without even a benefit of a committee chair. If the gates of hell indeed opened in the late 1990s why in blazes did it take so long for a Republican President, Republican House, and Republican Senate to freakin’ shut them? Oh yeah, that’s it, it was Barney Frank’s fault. And Jimmy Carter. And Grover Cleveland.

HOW SMART IS YOUR RIGHT FOOT?
This is hysterical. You have to try this. It is absolutely true. I guess
there are some things that the brain cannot handle.
HOW SMART IS YOUR RIGHT FOOT?
It is from an orthopaedic surgeon………… This will boggle your mind and you will keep you trying over and over again tosee if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can’t. It’s pre-programmed in your brain!
    1. Without anyone watching you (they will think you are cvrazy) and
while sitting at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot
off the floor and make clockwise circles.
    2. Now, while doing this, draw the number ’6′ in the air with your right
hand. Your foot will change direction.
And there’s nothing you can do about it! You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you’ve not already done so.

Was it because she submitted her resume for the DB writer position and was rejected? Cold.

  141. Posted by TheBlackstoneGroupie | February 4, 2009 at 4:13 PM

    @141 Yes, I am bipolar.
@130 Is Erin a cokehead??? If she is, in my opinion, she ain’t comin’ back to CS…she’s history.
But I do hope she gets her life back together none the less. She needs a good LSD trip; she can go chase unicorns in Central Park, look at rainbows all day, reflecting on her past mistakes, becoming a better person. Actually, I believe EVERYONE who is employed on Wall Street should be given LSD prior to hiring; nothing beats “ego disintegration,” when you question your own existence.
    God bless Timothy Leary…

    “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said ‘no, no, no’
Yes I’ve been black but when I come back you’ll know know know
I ain’t got the time and if my daddy thinks I’m fine
He’s tried to make me go to rehab but I won’t go go go
I’d rather be at home with Ray
    I ain’t got seventy days
    Cause there’s nothing
There’s nothing you can teach me
That I can’t learn from Mr Hathaway
    I didn’t get a lot in class
But I know it don’t come in a shot glass
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said ‘no, no, no’
Yes I’ve been black but when I come back you’ll know know know
I ain’t got the time and if my daddy thinks I’m fine
He’s tried to make me go to rehab but I won’t go go go
The man said ‘why do you think you here’
I said ‘I got no idea
I’m gonna, I’m gonna lose my baby
so I always keep a bottle near’
He said ‘I just think your depressed,
kiss me here baby and go rest’
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said ‘no, no, no’
Yes I’ve been black but when I come back you’ll know know know
I ain’t got the time and if my daddy thinks I’m fine
He’s tried to make me go to rehab but I won’t go go go
I don’t ever wanna drink again
I just ooh I just need a friend
I’m not gonna spend ten weeks
have everyone think I’m on the mend
    It’s not just my pride
It’s just ’til these tears have dried

This place is horrible – someone is going through a difficult time in her life and you can’t give her any privacy because amusing yourself over people’s problems make you feel better about yourself.
And you act like petty, mean misogynists whose only joy in life is insulting women and that is why you feel good when something bad happens to them. And you can’t understand why so many people hate bankers.

  157. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 6:12 PM

Is Erin Callans a made up person?

  158. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 6:34 PM

Did anyone actually SEE what happened and WHY? Comment please

  159. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 7:06 PM

    160
You have it wrong. It’s not bankers that are mean and misogynistic, it’s simply men being men. Don’t cry now little lady.

  160. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 7:24 PM

How many women or gay men are CEOs at major banks?
Making fun of Paulson or Blankfein or Fuld is funny – making fun of a woman trying to cope in an industry filled with misogynists who is going through a difficult time is not funny.

  161. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 9:28 PM

Callan is too sexy. She needs me.

  162. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 9:39 PM

    @113 – I don’t think so. The nose isn’t pointy enough.
@124 – Lol. I thought you were joking, I had to go look again. It definitely is them.

amy winehouse = shirley bassey for kids who like their music black but dont have the balls to hear it from a black woman
erin callan did not have a nervous breakdown, this rumor was circulating for days and she’s been talking to coworkers about it.
you playa hatin punks, get a life, dont drag someone else down.

  164. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 10:09 PM

I was in the elevator with Callan and she threw up all over me before casually exiting. The other elevator riders all laughed at me.

  165. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 10:17 PM

Are you crying? There’s no crying! There’s no crying in high finance!

  166. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 10:20 PM

So wait, because she’s a woman she should get a free pass on her epic fail?

  167. Posted by guest | February 4, 2009 at 10:50 PM

164 Why you lumping women with gay men? I find that the later cope quite well with misogynists. Similar to the way ethnic people of all stripes generally cope with whatever petty prejudice comes their way. Women however tend to bring a little more emotion into the workplace equation than is appropriate. Which naturally gets them into trouble. GAnalYst

Come on guys, this is just the old “I’m fucked up/out of my mind, so don’t indict me on securities fraud” strategy. Who hasn’t done this at least once.
Somewhat related, why is it that only male CEOs get charged with stuff like that?

  171. Posted by guest | February 5, 2009 at 7:09 AM

@174- the popo/regulators are all men and want to take their competition higher in the pecking order down a notch. Women get backdoor plea deals, perhaps literally
Can take people out of the jungle, can’t take the jungle out of people

    CC@#156/157…
TGFD knows that people, women usually, sometimes cry at their desks. It happens for a myriad of reasons, but it hardly is indicative of a nervous breakdown. As I said in my #112 post, something else is going on with Erin.
    Clown@#160…
Erin Callan made her life a very public spectacle last year when she masqueraded as a hot-assed fashionista on CNBC. She set herself up as a target for criticism. Why feel sorry for her?

    WHO IS ERIN CALLASPARINO????

  174. Posted by TheBlackstoneGroupie | February 5, 2009 at 10:59 AM

Three reasons she WILL be indicted:
    (1) Signing off on the 2008 Q1 10-Q, which was misleading, violating Title IX, Section 906, Section 1350 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002; penalties:
    (a) “certifying” a false report; up to $1M fine, up to ten years in prison
    (b) “willfully certifying” a false report; up to $10M fine, up to twenty years in prison
    (2) raising $6B in capital in early June, selling shares at $28/share on false financial premises; some of the victims: Hank Greenberg of AIG, Blackrock and Wes Edens of Fortress Investment Group
    (3) changing her story on a mark pertaining to a private equity investment, in which David Einhorn can corroborate
There you go…I just “indicted” her. She will be doing a “perp walk” in a Chanel dress and Manolo Blahniks.
    Welcome to the Machine…

  175. Posted by guest | February 5, 2009 at 12:05 PM

I hope all of this bashing makes you feel better about yourselves.
I haven’t seen one fact about Erin that is accurate. She hasn’t been in the office for a week so the sighting of tears, etc… are inaccurate.
She has not suffered a nervous breakdown but if you wrote this crap about me, I would.
How would you feel if someone wrote this stuff about your daughter? sister? mother?

Best of all, we were funny.
I’ve noticed that Wall St. today is a group of brainwashed poser-idiots. Their tight-assed wired-up personalities couldnt come up with a funny thought if their bonuses depended on it.
The boards on this website are a perfect example.
Why dont all you Wall St. people under 50 just kill yourselves?
