We have no idea what the cause might be. Friday? Boredom? Unemployment? Whatever the case, the tips are pouring in to the Bess Levin hot tips hotline(tm). Ironic that this should happen on the afternoon when Bess is on assignment. The latest:
Harvard Management Co will be laying off 25% of its staff.

were the harvard cuts made today?

  13. Posted by TheBlackstoneGroupie | February 6, 2009 at 1:27 PM

WOW, Harvard has gone to hell since Drew Gilpin Faust became President. And people wonder why Harvard only had male Presidents. What does a Civil War professor who wishes the South won the Civil War (she’s from Virginia, and trust me, books she’s authored blantanty show her sympathies towards the Stars and Bars) know about financing?? She didn’t even own her own home when she was at Radcliffe; Harvard provided her one as an incentive to poach her from the University of Pennsylvania. Man, I can’t WAIT to return to Cambridge next week!
Drew Faust, Harvard’s UGLIEST and WORST President…I bet now they miss “Lounge Lizard” Lawrence H. Summers.

  14. Posted by guest | February 6, 2009 at 1:32 PM

Hey @13……Harvard MBAs have destroyed more capital than Civil War professors, you dipshit.

  19. Posted by guest | February 6, 2009 at 1:44 PM

All right #4 and #5, I’ll bite. Are you saying Veritas isn’t spelled correctly or am I missing the point? (Not the first time)

What was the last assignment that Bess did? Interview with the coffee guy in front of Lehman.
Is she on a job interview?

@blndebnker – easy there killer. when you get back next week, I’ll organize another get together. and for the record, I didn’t think that was too terribly snarky…

  22. Posted by guest | February 6, 2009 at 1:47 PM

@19 – only four words there buddy, and one is spelled wrong. Clue: its not Veri or Tas.

@13 clearly by Cambridge you’re going back to visit your alma mater Lesley college because you have no fucking clue how Harvard works.

  25. Posted by guest | February 6, 2009 at 1:49 PM

    @5, @11 – Uhh … what?
Harvard’s motto is “Veritas,” which is Latin for truth. Other than splitting the word into the proper two-fragment form for the “Too xxx, didn’t yyy” tagline, what was spelled improperly?
    Not @2

  26. Posted by guest | February 6, 2009 at 1:51 PM

I do know how Harvard works, actually.
    (1) Students and donors-accounts receivable;
    (2) Faculty, administration and other employees-accounts payable.
Wow, being nothing more than a pawn to enrich the endowment of Harvard Corporation.
    Ivy League in short:
One attends Harvard for the bragging rights.
One attends Yale to join Secret Societies.
One attends Princeton because one was rejected from Harvard and Yale, and actually wants to have an education!
And one attends Brown just to party.
I PREFER Brown over any Ivy League school…the other schools treat Brown like grass, they just step all over it.
Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania, Cornell and Columbia, don’t have an opinion.
Oh, and Lesley University has something that $$$ can not buy that Harvard students lack, and that is a personality! I have partied with Lesley students, so don’t knock them!

    @44 & @52
“Don’t Let it Bring You Down” by Neil Young
Old man lying by the side of the road
    With the lorries rolling by,
Blue moon sinking from the weight of the load
And the building scrape the sky,
Cold wind ripping down the allay at dawn
    And the morning paper flies,
Dead man lying by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes.
Don’t let it bring you down
    It’s only castles burning,
    Find someone who’s turning
    And you will come around.
Blind man running through the light of the night
With an answer in his hand,
Come on down to the river of sight
    And you can really understand,
Red lights flashing through the window in the rain,
Can you hear the sirens moan?
White cane lying in a gutter in the lane,
    If you’re walking home alone.
Don’t let it bring you down
    It’s only castles burning,
    Just find someone who’s turning
    And you will come around.
Don’t let it bring you down
    It’s only castles burning,
    Just find someone who’s turning
    And you will come around.

would it be pretty funny is this individual could do a better job than those who are criticizing him or her?? that is a scary thought.

  58. Posted by guest | February 6, 2009 at 3:18 PM

    @56
    too true, didn’t read.

  59. Posted by blndebnker | February 6, 2009 at 3:22 PM

@Groupie – See this is your problem. You clearly have a very low sense of self-worth and come on to a forum such as this to show everyone what a big swinging dick you are. You feel the need to attack others and belittle them so as to inflate yourself. The funny part is that I didn’t criticize you at all yet you felt the need to go on the offensive against me. I pity you sir/madam. And I’m not impressed.
As for what I do and where I work : I’m very satisfied in the job I do and do not feel the need to broadcast it to the insecure likes of you.

  60. Posted by Investorcluzo | February 6, 2009 at 3:24 PM

@23 – all I will say is that it’s good to put a face to a name.
@44 – they tried to get TGFD banned, didn’t work so well. he was harassed to the point that he went away for a while (kind of like a “time-out” for kids), now he’s back. it’s good to have a few kids to kick around…after all, this place would be dull if it was just a bunch of cookie cutter bankers patting themselves on the back all day (right?).

Low self-worth??? Attacking others??? Belittling them to inflate oneself???
I thought that was the purpose of this forum!! j/k
Does not matter if you are “satisfied” in your job, are you “secured” in your job that matters.
You must work for GS… :D
You are the one with the “I am all that, and then some” attitude.
Maybe if you were Henry Kravis or Stephen Schwarzman, then I would listen to you…but you aren’t.

That’s my favorite song of all time, but you’re still a jackass.

  64. Posted by TheBlackstoneGroupie | February 6, 2009 at 3:44 PM

Of course I am a jackass, I admire “asset strippers” such as The Blacktone Group and KKR. At least I can say they have an “honest” economic model.
“We are going to take your company private, and overleverage it with debt. Then we are going to sell pieces of it off to pay off this debt, and raid its healthy pension fund. During this process, we will also send in efficiency experts to downsize the amount of workers, and further cut costs by not investing in R&D.”
Long live PE, the nectar of endowments, foundations and pension funds…
