Picture 656.pngCharlie Gasparino: “I was at San Pietro yesterday and I was stopped by a waiter who asked me, ‘When is this going to stop?’ And I said, ‘What, like the financial crisis?’ [And he said] ‘No when are they going to stop beating up on my customers, ’cause they’re not showing up.’ And that’s a problem. There is a trickle down here, when you start attacking this compensation system. Middle class, working class people get affected. [More importantly, Charlie Gasparino gets affected. CEOs abandon San Pietro --> San Pietro lays off busboys --> my scoops goes out the window --> Apocolypse].”

@16—You bet your ass there is a restaurant bubble. Walk in one of those places where they wouldn’t give you the time of day much less a reservation, and they fall all over you. Then peruse the menu and look at the prices we were paying just a very short while ago. Hard to say who was more foolish, but the foie gras is piling up like shat through a goose.

  40. Posted by guest | February 5, 2009 at 12:28 PM

@43 – Clinton “Figured the job out”? He was impeached! He created this housing mess with his “everyone should own a home policies”, and his reluctance to address radical islamic terror led directly to 911 on our own soil! If that is “figuring out the job”, then God help us all.

I just noticed something. It seems that the staff of CNBC all get excited when Gasbag (LOL) and Kneale start to converse with each other. Kneale accuses Gasbag of his poor reporting and “sources,” Gasbag replies “please let me finish…,” and all the others just sit and grin.
I can’t believe Gasbag was a reporter with “The New York Post.”
Gasbag, the Andrea Peyser of CNBC…
Kneale looks like he came from a Dilbert cartoon strip.

When you accept a job and are told the salary for that job, you should then expect a bonus to provide your employer with your best work. I think not. If your not giving what you are capable of, your are part of this corporate mentality of I deserve everything for giving nothing extra.

Yea he gave us 4.2 Trillion more Dollars of borrowed Debt to pay off some giver there boy…..

  78. Posted by guest | February 5, 2009 at 2:30 PM

81 82 No, no. The bonus is to reward you for bringing in extra profits (however your employer defines them). Compensation expense therefore varies along with the profitability of the business, which is important in a service business where compensation is ~50% of costs. Its a win win. Profits fall, your employers costs fall as well. Your argument is just wrong, because it removes that potential flex from compensation expense.
Equally wrong however is the argument bandied around a lot here that the bonus is not really a bonus but in fact an entitlement that bankers are due because they are very well educated and work long hours.

I don’t expect Charcoal-Gas to say something about the SUDDEN AND CONTROVERSIAL RESIGNATION OF JONATHAN WALD for obvious reason (he wants to keep his job, man!) A lot of speculations out there but it’s only a matter of time that someone would be brave enough to tell our curios world the real reason.
Will Erin Burnett get the same privilege of reporting from foreign soil?Wald spoiled her with that! She doesn’t need to go to Russia to tell the world their stock market plunge 75%.

Dont expect the public to fund your payroll and pay what the hell you like.
Expect the public to fund your payroll, be greatful because really you should not even be getting that ffs. You should be looking for another job!!
Not exactly complicated, a maximum nation wide pay cap has not been enforced – I now its difficult for your type to get your head around the simple fact that you are entitled to nothing! If you think you should be getting paid more go and bloody well earn it rather then frighten idiot government officials into giving you cash for crap or nothing.

  87. Posted by guest | February 7, 2009 at 9:09 PM

So these are the great minds of Wall Street? No wonder our economy is going down the tubes!
To #84, if there were so many profits that $18 billion worth of bonuses were merited at the end of 2008, why exactly did those companies need a government bailout?
