So Rick Santelli was slated to appear on The Daily Show last night, to discuss the “riot” he incited last week. Unfortunately, Rickles chose to “bail” on the interview, which did not please Jon Stewart. Above, Stewie lets us know how he feels about the cancellation, which sort of snowballs into his thoughts on the biz “news” network in general. Didn’t see the Carl Quintanilla hit coming (especially when there are so many who are more deserving) but what can you do.

JS relies on fantastic hindsight. I give him style points though on the humor factor. But it’s easy to look back, compile clips, and rewrite history using a bullpen of writers.
How about making fun of these points: All the indices are down since O took office. Wealth (pensions, 401(k)s, foundations) is being destroyed by the minute.. an indication that O, while a much needed fresh face, hasn’t convinced the market of anything. Funny stuff. Anyone who thinks Daily Show is “subtly” liberal is a moron. Normal people who watch it realize there’s a bias, but also are smart enough not to take it as legitimate news.
People are obviously allowed to speak out against Obama (side note: I’d like to thank the people using the term “Messiah” or “Saint”, as it makes it easier to pick out the wing nuts). Problem is, people who do so generally have view points which were roundly rejected in the last election. So what you’re really speaking out against is a democratic society. You’re upset that the majority are in control. You have no idea how much joy it is bringing me watching all of you squirm.

This clearly shows that we can apply Chomsky’s progaganda model to business news. In the propoganda model, Chomsky (along with Edward Herman) argues that pressure of the competitions facing media corporations (as with any company) plays a significant role in forming the content and quality of reporting. Invariably, news outlets report only or place greater emphasis on stories that the public wants to hear. Chomsky takes particular aim at the NYT. A large portion of its readership is what is often termed the “liberal elite.” The NYT often plays to the lowest common denominator, afraid to alienate to many readers. Though considered a liberal paper, the NYT by no means challenges the left to become more populist. Chomsky argues that since the NYT (along with a few other large publications) is the most widely read newspaper, it sets the tone for all other newspapers. “If its not in the NYT, its not newsworthy,” is the prevailing wisdom. The result is a media that reports lowest common denominator stories, marginalizing the minority with true grievances and sacrificing truth for readership.
CNBC is subject to this propoganda model. Furthermore, when people watch CNBC, they want to hear from the top people in business. They want to see Maria Baritoromo interviewing John Thain. However, in order to maintain access to such figures, CNBC best not challenge the status quo. This pressure along with that mentioned above limits the content on CNBC and forces a homogenation of opinion. This mechanism is a passive result of market selection and thus inevitable. Its unfortunate that people use the news to make investment decision while lacking a truly independent outlet for information.

When mocking things conservative the target is the message. He makes it a point to highlight any inherent inconsitencies in the message.
On the other hand, while mocking things liberal he lampoons the delivery or style behind the message but never the inherent logic or ideal.
It is is subtle and brilliant. But it is propaganda nonetheless.

Something being on Comedy Central does not preclude its being propaganda. Guess what have been one of the most utilized propaganda tools of regimes authoritarian as well as otherwise? Cartoons.
Also, having a political message is different from propaganda. South Park (love it) has a very strong libertarian bent but does not indulge in propaganda. That is not the case with the Daily Show.
Also, it is anything but a comedy show. ever noticed the interviews, especially when the guest is conservative? These are not Leno-esque ‘gee ha ha ha buy my book / see my movie’ interview. They are fairly intense and carried out with the intent of revealing some inconsistency in the guest’s worldview.

But let’s face the facts: Comedy Central AND CNBC are both comedy networks, making spectacularly ludicrous statements with stunning frequency. Stewart leans to the political, while CNBC leans to the financial, but both dabble in each others water from time to time.
I mean, everyone bashes CNBC here on a daily basis; did you think you had a monopoly on that? the problem with CNBC is that it remains an echo-chamber. they bring on CEOs, providing them with free adverstising while acting as though their comments provide any real insight into their company’s well-being. then they fill the other 98% of programming with analyst spots, which are largely opportunity for their team of morons to spout off on ideologies, largely the beef that most people should have with the channel. oh yeah, then throw in Charlie Gasparino to occasionally paint targets with half-ass*d journalism. the channel does not merely report on financial markets, it makes them worse.

Yes, Jon is definitely Liberal. But he is also moderate in his criticism. He even gives reasons for what he says – heck, many times, he just shows the clip and lets the viewers decide! (Yes context has importance here, but compare that to what Limbaugh does!)
Jon’s show is satirical commentary. Limbaugh’s show claims to be “Actual” political commentary – he’s not comedy, by any definition. Saying things that are so extreme they are laughed at is NOT comedy – he lacks proper CONTEXT.

I think there is a definate dichotomy between under/over 30 year olds in this country. i don’t know the demographics on DB, but reading nearly any other major news site’s comment leaves one with a different view on the current political atmoshpere. DB is a rather distinct outlier

I was quite bummed when he had “Papa Bear” Bill O’Reilly on his show and Bill denied that he actually was being honest on his show. He deflated Stephen’s whole point by lying to him. Sucked.
I think the funniest part of all is that he gets a lot of letters from people who believe the character he plays is REAL.
I’m a huge seller of anyone at CNBC, Burnett included. I’m not sure her rise to the top really suggests much about her as much as its largely a commentary on her competition. Not that it takes much to head up NBC News (just be an empty suit with a pretty face), but I would not assume she stacks up nearly as well when you broaden the competition. She’s largely the resident girl scout, trying to stay in the good-graces with those that cut the checks while advancing her master’s political agenda along the way. That’s what’s so funny about “Rick’s Revolution” (as they called it on CNBC)… it would not have gathered much support anywhere but the fertile backdrop of CNBC (they were playing his clip every 20 seconds, or so it seemed, for a few days). In this sense, they are news creators as much as anything else, which is incredibly dangerous when you consider real money is sometimes involved (eg- Gasparino going after GS for their private meeting, post-Obama housing announcement)…. for the sake of everyone’s portfolio, CNBC needs to be shut down!

Santelli and CNBC deserved every second. “The Daily Show” is under tight time pressure, and you CANNOT cancel on them with only 120 hours notice. Hell, script approvals from the Obama people take at least 48 hours.
And why would Santelli avoid someone so fairminded? Despite Santelli’s outrageous provocation, Stewart’s discussion is a model of balance. Not a single clip taken out of context! The handling of Santelli’s criticism of _every_ bailout to be particularly high-minded. And Stewart took exquisite pains to note that Santelli subsequently regretted the word “loser”.
We haven’t seen such devoted attention to fairness since “Crossfire”. Stewart’s originality, fairness and wit are emblematic of progressivism’s openminded humanity.

As Jon Stewart has so often pointed out himself, he’s a comedian, doing the “fake news.” And like the best of fools, he provides insight into the workings of our world, insights which often make us squirm. His take on the financial gurus was spot on. It’s apparent that they didn’t (and don’t) have the vaguest idea about what the “market” is doing. They’ve been spinning stories, along with Madoff and Stanford and the “banksters,” and asking us to trust them with their schtick, in much the same way that the Bush administration asked us to trust them as they tried to dismantle the Constitution and run an illegal and immoral war (and hide the cost of our “investment” in another country’s “democracy”)and bring the economy of this country to its knees.
As for Santelli, when you are an ass, and a headline-grubbing and disingenuous one to boot, there is absolutely no doubt that Jon Stewart is going to call you out. It’s what he does best, root out the hypocrisy and the venality that characterize so many of the players in the debacle that is the financial crisis in this country.

It’s important to consider people’s motivations:
1) Only 1/3 of Americans can name the 3 branches of government, so 2/3 of the posters here are trying to sound smarter than they are…
2) John Stewart’s motivation is to find hypocritical inconsistencies and make snarky remarks about them; That’s how he increases his ratings.
3) CNBC’s motivation is to try to convince viewers they have the answers when no one has the answers (hence their inconsistencies)
